There has been a concerning rise in laser strikes reported over New Jersey, linked to a surge in drone sightings. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that laser incidents in the area have increased by 269% in December 2024 compared to the same period last year. On December 14, 2024, 24 laser strikes were reported in New Jersey alone, contributing to a nationwide total of 123 that day.
These laser incidents pose serious risks to aviation safety, as lasers can temporarily blind pilots, endangering both passengers and crews. The FAA has emphasised that this behavior is illegal and dangerous, with offenders facing potential fines and prison time. Although there is no direct evidence linking drone sightings to the rise in laser incidents, both issues have escalated simultaneously. In response, temporary flight restrictions have been implemented in parts of New Jersey to mitigate security threats, especially near critical infrastructure.
Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely, urging legislative measures to bolster counter-drone operations and safety protocols.
