It was a “fine day for tennis” they say in the beginning of this video. Stefan Edberg certainly agreed. He was nearly flawless. Can you imagine being in the zone and when it happens for you it happens in the final of the US Open! What a fantastic Sunday Stefan had that day. It actually started when Edberg beat Chang then Lendl and by the final Stefan could do no wrong and played beautifully in beating the world class hard court champion Jim Courier. In total, Edberg soundly beat three of the greatest hard courters in the world.

It's ok to put pressure on the umpire, Jim - he's a professional. But harassing the linespeople when you don't like it is bullying the little guy (and the replays showed Jim was almost always wrong, anyway). Great match, though. Jim fought hard but on this day, Stephan played irresistible serve-volley, chip and charge and even patient, confident baseline exchanges.

I'd never seen this match before but had heard about it. One thing that struck me at the start of the match is how nervous Courier looked - his movement was very stiff, like he was really restricted by his nerves. It seemed like it was affecting his thinking too.

Firstly, he hadn't beaten Edberg at the 1991 Australian Open. Edberg lost to Lendl. Courier beat Edberg at the Australian open in 1992 and 1993. It's not really difficult to comprehend why Courier might be nervous. It was his first US Onen final and only his second overall. Also his home grand slam. Chris Evert talked about her first Wimbledon final (which was also her second grand slam final) and said it was like an out of body experience, she was so nervous.
@archangelmusic13 Жыл бұрын
edberg showed here what he could do on a fast surface, of course the usta slowed the court down the next year, but it was still just fast enough for edberg to still win, so they slowed it down even more in 93. they did eventually speed it back up in the late 90s and early 2000's before slowing it down again.

It’s amazing to see a Major men’s final completed in under 2 hrs. Why has the time doubled in the last 30 years?
@ahakangard Жыл бұрын
Players take at least double the amount of time between serves. At LEAST. All the rituals around preparing to deliver the serve. That's one reason. And two, the game being more physical these days. Longer rallies on average. I believe there's less restriction on medical timeouts and toilet breaks these days, too.
@pam0626 Жыл бұрын
@@ahakangard I would think the game would be less physical as the rackets are better and players have to exert less to get balls over the net. Ditto for court surfaces.

this match shows what edberg could do on a fast surface to courier, sadly the us open slowed down their surface the next year and they slowed it down even more in 93 and kept slowing it down till the late 90s then they started making it fast again,even wimbledon slowed down its surface by making the grass thicker and using balls with extra fuzz on them
