The US Postal Service has suspended the shipments of parcels from China and Hong Kong, rattling Chinese e-commerce brands like Shein and Temu. While no explanation was given, the statement comes a day after the Trump administration closed the "de minimis" loophole, which allowed parcels under $800 to enter the US duty free. Also in this edition, Canadian consumers are turning their backs on US-made goods after Donald Trump's threat of imposing 25 percent tariffs on Canadian imports.

The De Minimis loophole enabled small packages valued under $800 to be imported into the country without paying customs duties or undergoing extensive inspections. It has been widely used by e-commerce companies to ship low-cost goods directly to consumers without incurring import taxes. However, it is enabling the influx of counterfeit goods, unsafe products, and even illegal substances like fentanyl precursors. That's why it was eliminated.

You also get a lot of packages on Amazon that are direct from China so also Amazon is impacted but TEMU also offers at least in the USA there is Temu LOCAL where it uses internal USA logistics so packages can arrive faster. The only issue is you need to have $30 order from each seller or pay $3 for the delivery, but it can be hard as each seller only has so much stuff and you cannot cross between sellers. TEMU needs to set up some logistics hubs so they can combine goods together but that would raise the prices I imagine.

Yeah sounds like it. But Temu was preparing for this with their "LOCAL" option you can order from local sellers inside the USA the only problem is they charge $2.99 shipping if the items are under $30 order but only from the 1 seller which can be hard as you want items from different sellers most cases - so a bit of a problem

IT'S ABOUT FRIKKIN TIME----China has been getting super low postal rates for decades-which really hurts small businesses-online, in particular. When China can ship an item across the ocean for a couple of bucks-which might cost you $8 to even $15-20-well you can see the extreme disadvantage placed on US shippers/sellers. Usually Chinese shippers wait until they have a large quantity-even up to a whole container and then ship--pretty cheap per item... But the last mile, as they say, is performed by the USPS---AND THE LAST MILE IS BY FAR THE MOST EXPENSIVE---THEREFORE USPS IS ACTUALLY SUBSIDIZING CHINESE ITEM DELIVERY IN THE USA.

The U.S. is failing in every category, including trade. China is becoming America's worst nightmare in business competition proving that it can build better products with less money. While Americans are divided and at war, China remains united and at peace with other nations. This is why American companies are feeling the pressure of losing market share and billions of dollars in revenue.

Trump did back down by putting tariffs on Mexico & Canada on Feb 4. Tariffs on Mexico & Canada would have made life more expensive for US people. that could hurt Trump. Also, was Trump talking to Canada & Mexico before he started his tariff threats? The same deal he made with Canada, was the same deal Canada proposed in December. Mexico did not like that American-made weapons were being used by the drug cartel. Mexico. so the Mexican leader agreed to send 10,000 members of the National Guard to the US-Mexican border to "prevent the trafficking of drugs, in particular fentanyl, from Mexico to the US". President Sheinbaum said the US had in turn agreed to increase measures to prevent the trafficking of high-powered US weapons into Mexico. Also, was Trump talking to Canada & Mexico before he started his tariff threats? It was like Trump making a scene, before talking to Canada & Mexico.

The main reason we have any deficits at all is we have the largest economy and buy more from more countries... In 2024, the United States had the largest economy in the world, with a gross domestic product of just under 29 trillion U.S. dollars. China (whom we have the largest deficit with) had the second largest economy, at around 18.5 trillion U.S. dollars. The total deficit (all countries )for the United States in fiscal year (FY) 2024 was $1.833 trillion. Our total trade deficit compared to our total economy (GDP) isn't the problem. Trump is the problem....

I’m not a Trump fan but I’ve been aware of this loop hole issue for awhile and this fix is long overdue. This is a bipartisan issue. Temu and SHEIN do not have to follow the environmental and labor regulations of western countries so of course they are able to undercut companies that must. Yes, prices will be higher but they were already too low to begin with. That’s how they gained so much market share. There’s a great documentary here on YT about this problem & the rise of fast fashion at the expense of quality. It goes into this topic a bit also.

When a package enters the USA the customer will have to pay 10% tax, this is done all over the world mostly in Europe but the process of managing the tax is so expensive that the tax end up just going to the cost of managing the tax system itself, the workers managing it so it's an expensive way to add get more people working I guess? It will probably have to be done in Los Angeles so manpower is expensive there too. Most packages enter the USA at LAX in Los Angeles if by Air Cargo or the Long Beach Ports if by container ship, so either way not cheap. It will be good for Los Angeles's economy I guess which is funny as most people there voted against Trump LOL

"Stop weaponizing trade"-how hypocritical coming from China. China has a long history of using trade as a geopolitical weapon-whether it's restricting rare earth exports, blocking Australian meat, coal, and wine over political disputes, or leveraging its economic power against Taiwan and other nations. So when they tell others to "stop weaponizing trade," it sounds like pure projection. Granted, most major powers, including the U.S. and EU, also use trade as a tool of influence, but China takes it to another level with its aggressive, retaliatory approach, often targeting specific countries and industries. Their statement feels more like a defensive PR move rather than a genuine concern for free trade. Ignore them, but banning parcels from China and Hong Kong is not enough, as they now have ports around the world, allowing them to reroute goods and mitigate tariffs.
@pineapplesareyummy6352

Everything you listed are examples of China *RESPONDING* to something another country did. China absolutely did NOT start restricting rare earths or blocking Australian meat/coal/etc without the other side starting a trade/political conflict with China first. Do you expect you can attack China's interests in one way or another, China will just keep shutting up about it without eventually responding? I say it is quite legitimate.
