The conservative US state of Kansas has decided in a referendum to protect abortion rights - in a major victory for pro-choice groups.
Voters overwhelmingly said they did not wish to amend the state constitution to assert there is no right to abortion.
It was the first electoral test of the issue since the US Supreme Court allowed states to ban the procedure.

Not that i am against abortion rights, but is it not rather the fact that people get to vote at all that makes democracy prevail than what the result of the vote is? I mean it would not have been less democratic if they voted the other way, right?

As a resident of Kansas, I think it was easy in a conservative state to say "I'm pro-life. No abortion at all. Ever. Ban it." When you had Roe basically making those words hollow. But once you see a very serious, *very real* chance that you, your sister, daughter, friend, mother might have NO life-saving access for a thousand miles, it's a thunderbolt.

@@lainname9442, First of all, not all children are birthed "voluntarily". There are cases wherein a woman is impregnated from abuse, non-consensual rape, incest, and more. Second, not everyone is capable and prepared to raise a child, especially when the to-be mother is a minor. Some can be unstable mentally, physically, or financially, barring them from being able to take proper care of an infant. @@lainname9442 Give me one source that is completely verified, confirmed, and factually developed that claims "99% of abortion cases are not the product of rape, incest, or abuse", as you claim. You say that not everyone's pregnancy is a product of rape, incest, or abuse, therefore this can't justify the entirety of abortion. Well, not everyone's pregnancy, no matter how healthy they are, can result in the woman being alive. This pregnancy can cause illnesses that harm and endanger the woman, as well as affect pre-existing physical complications at a life-threatening level. It's the same logic. Meaning, that even if the pregnancy was planned, it can still cause complications that can place the woman's life in peril and require her to possibly procure an abortion. If you say abortion is murder because it "kills" the infant, is it not also murder if a woman dies because you prevented her from receiving a safe abortion at a time when her life was at risk? The point is, even if the baby was planned and intentional, there will still always be possible negative side effects that can affect the woman's life. This is why abortion should be kept a safe and legal *option*.

I had suffered a terrible miscarriage too. But, I'm glad I voted no and 100% pro-choice. Do you even know what would happen if abortion got illegal in kansas? People who has a miscarriage won't be able to get d&c that's including your daughter. And you know what happens when we don't get d&c? We die because stupid prolifers only think about just one thing and doesn't consider any other things that would all go wrong. People who has miscarriage needs to get a d&c or else we live with a dead fetus inside of us and if we can't remove it serious shit happens. And why d&c will be illegal if abortion was ban is because they consider d&c to be an abortion procedure. So, what your telling me is that you would rather have your daughter die because killing a "baby" is wrong? By the way it's a fetus not a baby. This also saves people who goes through miscarriages. Seriously, go do some research and then talk. But, if your still fine with your daughter passing away just for the sake of a freaking fetus then idk what to tell you.

@slartibartfast let me tell you kid - the only way to protect ‘her body’ from pregnancy 100% is to not have sex AT ALL. It’s useful to know when you grow up. This is what my comment was about. Hope you know how to read already. And yes, I do ignore most that you write - because I read the first line, see utter nonsense and explain you at least the basics. No point in going deep if you don’t know how women get pregnant.

@Rooskie J why should a rape victim who was prevented from leaving have to go through child birth because they are past 36 weeks would vyou like to go through the same giving birth to the monster child just because it exists no especially CIF that child is from the family of that woman or girl not to mention that if related Chas a higher chance of a disabled or disability the right of the woman and girl should come first. As for a 22 week it is not always possible to tell of a generic disease which as those parents with risks if the child is abnormal or not . I have family that is disabled for the same reason back when he was born the tests didn't exist and both the stress and constant heartache they went through is why I say each family has a choice now because of science breakthrough so when they find out let that family choose what they want to do. Not force them to live with it if they don't want to . What I am not saying is if you don't have a medical condition and is not related to crime or illness. they child is a boy or girl then your free to terminate at any time on just because you want to choose the sex of said child that is why I say keep that cut off at 22 weeks. Further to this in the cases of miscarriage treatment should be made available at any time that family has already gone through enough so allow the treatment to happen then as well

A woman from the UK and a woman from Boston discussing and analyzing what happened in Kansas……. I’ve been very active in Kansas politics the last few years, and let me tell you, their analysis is not very accurate. The vote was not “outrage about the ruling” that overturned roe v wade. It was a rejection of anti-abortion legislation that contained no exceptions. Had the amendment made exceptions for rape, health, etc., it would have passed, no question. I see so many people who have no vested interest in Kansas, no knowledge of the state or people, and no conception of its politics trying to view the vote from their perspective, which is usually a liberal, coastal, democratic perspective. This vote was absolutely not an embrace of abortion like so many people portray it as. It was a rejection of the most extreme form of abortion regulations that just so happened to be coupled to broadly popular “common sense” (you know what I mean) regulations.

Their mistake was to settle for limited abortion rights as provided by roe for only upto fetal viability(roughly 22 weeks), in fact it's chance to correct that, American people should now implement a complete nationwide guaranteed fundamental right to abortion (on demand and at any stage of pregnancy) which will be based on and supported by the right to choose, the right to bodily autonomy, the right to privacy, 14th and 15th amendments and much more that's already in the constitution and much more that can be added to the constitution to make abortion the most sacred right of American people. The only logical restriction on it should be notifying the parents if the person seeking an abortion is a minor. And yeah, abortion should be free and government funded.

I’m seeing a lot of “this is how democracy is supposed to act” but that’s not true. America is not a democracy it is a republic. We have a constitution that guarantees free protection for every citizen equally under the law. This means that all citizens must be treated equally under the law. So for instance, people do not have a right to vote on gay or interracial marriage. I think that that should also apply to abortion. Men have a right to decide if they’re going to have a baby or not even if they make some sort of sexual mistake. Women should be treated the same way. So it’s not a state issue. The whole idea of states rights is completely ridiculous considering that it’s not 1800 and nobody lives or stays in the same state for the rest of their sad lives anymore. It should be a whole American issue. All Americans under this constitutional republic should be treated the same. We are all granted certain rights to privacy and the pursuit of happiness and our success under our federal Constitution. Please notate the word federal.

America is both little boy. We're a Republic AND a Democracy. A Republic tends to be more authoritarian (like Republicans) for example, Russia. They have a central figure who holds all the power and controls everything. We have that to a degree. We elect a central figure who is the most powerful person in the country. The Democracy comes in with the fact that we VOTE for this person. We also have multiple ELECTED chambers that is supposed to keep checks and balances in place so the president can't do whatever he wants. As you see... we are both. No idea why Republicans are pushing this narrative and want us to be a 100% Republic. Aren't we supposed to be different than Russia and China? Why do you people fight so hard to turn us into an authoritarian nation? The land was brutally stolen from the natives to set up a different world where we have elections with checks and balances. Republicans are embracing authoritarianism and it's disturbing... I will vote for blue until the right stops trying to destroy the nation.

@kevinpetroff5486 Жыл бұрын
@@ejkk9513 I am NOT a Republican. Perhaps I wasn’t 100% clear in my comment. I was stating that America is a republic because there are rights that we are all supposed to have, regardless of public opinion. Not everything is on the table when it comes to voting. The public does not have a right to vote on the rights of fellow citizens (in this case, the Constitution protects the right to abortion if a woman chooses, as ruled on in Roe v Wade, even if her Godly neighbor disapproves).

“It is concluded that the basic neuronal substrate required to transmit somatosensory information develops by mid-gestation (18 to 25 weeks), however, the functional capacity of the neural circuitry is limited by the immaturity of the system. Thus, 18 to 25 weeks is considered the earliest stage at which the lower boundary of sentience could be placed. At this stage of development, however, there is little evidence for the central processing of somatosensory information. Before 30 weeks gestational age, EEG activity is extremely limited and somatosensory evoked potentials are immature, lacking components which correlate with information processing within the cerebral cortex. Thus, 30 weeks is considered a more plausible stage of fetal development at which the lower boundary for sentience could be placed.” Source: ‘When is the Capacity for Sentience Acquired During Human Fetal Development?’ By Susan Tawia Pages 153-165 | Received 07 Mar 1991, Accepted 28 Jan 1992, Published online: 07 Jul 2009

Yes, a state-by-state decision...just as the recent overturning of Roe v Wade indicated. There are times when abortion is appropriate and times when it is not...now each state must draw those lines.

@@annab9994 Here's a line that's already been drawn here in the US...an embryo or fetus in utero is a LEGAL VICTIM ...if they are injured or killed in an act of violence/crime. So the killing of an embryo or fetus during a violent crime could easily put someone in jail/prison, but if it's a woman's choice, then killing the embryo or fetus...is no problem at all. Just from a purely logical standpoint alone, this makes no sense. "The Unborn Victims of Violence Act of 2004 (Public Law 108-212) is a United States law that recognizes an embryo or fetus in utero as a legal victim if they are injured or killed during the commission of any of over 60 listed federal crimes of violence."

@@annab9994 that's a good really great idea! So should all the laws surrounded things that are male dominated like prisons, the military, police, jobs, all have all their laws decided by men only? Sounds very smart!

“18 to 25 weeks is considered the earliest stage at which the lower boundary of sentience could be placed. At this stage of development, however, there is little evidence for the central processing of somatosensory information… 30 weeks is considered a more plausible stage of fetal development at which the lower boundary for sentience could be placed.” Source: peer-reviewed research paper ‘When is the Capacity for Sentience Acquired During Human Fetal Development?’ by Susan Tawia
