Marquet addresses the realism of nuclear crisis movies, such as "The World Is Not Enough" and "K-19: The Widowmaker,". He also rated the accuracy of standoff scenes in "The Hunt for Red October," "The Enemy Below", "Hunter Killer," and "Crimson Tide." He also breaks down the realism of costumes, tactics, and terminology from "U-571."
Is life on board a submarine, including confined conditions and drills, as depicted in "Das Boot"? Would Navy SEALs enter a submarine from a HALO drop similar to "Act of Valor", and is it possible for a submarine to hear music from the water's surface, like in "The Wolf's Call"? Can holes on a submarine be plugged with pins and other metal objects, as we see in "The Simpsons"? Would nuclear missiles be triggered by dislodging in a ship interior, such as in "Aquaman"?
Marquet graduated top of his class from the US Naval Academy and served for 28 years on submarines, including as an engineer officer aboard the USS Will Rogers, then as captain on the USS Olympia and the USS Santa Fe. Having retired in 2009, he is now a Wall Street Journal best-selling author of "Turn the Ship Around! A True Story of Turning Followers Into Leaders."

Don’t get fooled. Once we got underway, even the the most wholesome men succumb to the juvenile jokes, language, and jackassery every once in a while. I served in the US submarine force before women were integrated, so it was like going to sea with your brothers, male cousins, uncles, dads, and grandfathers. A giant “locker room” environment with the salty language, humor, and ball-busting you would expect, but all that silliness could turn on a dime at the sound of an alarm. Without a doubt the most professional and focused group of people I’ve ever had the pleasure to work with.

The old man, (you know it Captain), XO, and Cob were like our dads. Always had answers. Submarine crews were best of the best! I felt at home. As someone that was actually on the USS San Francisco, I can confirm that running into the ground was in fact a very bad day. It was however not actually all that bloody, mostly concussions and broken bones. Unfortunately there was a single death but thankfully it was only one. RIP MM2 Ashley.

@@xJ0LLYR0GERx Yeah, it was head trauma that caused his brain to swell and we were unable to get him airlifted off the boat due to the cage being too big to fit though the hatches in the sail. They did try. It's likely that getting him off the ship wouldn't have saved him anyways because he passed away very shortly after the attempt. Also, to pre-answer an incoming question: the cage is designed for the escape hatches (forward or aft) which are bigger and it could probably fit through the weapons shipping hatch as well (though that one is slanted); but the ship was sitting too low in the water to open those hatches since we lost half of our ballast tanks in the collision.

Wasn't the collision while most people were in the rack and MM2 Ashley was on watch taking logs in the auxiliary machinery spaces and flew down from an upper to a lower level? Or at least that's what I had heard was the reason why possibly more people weren't hurt. Granted ... When isn't at least 1/3 of the crew in the rack?

There is a scene where rivets in hull pop. The hull of the type of submarine wasn´t riveted. I still think the movie is great and I might rewatch it.

I think most people inherently know when a movie is overexaggerating and modern movies love to do that. People realize it detracts from the quality of the story. I wish hollywood realized real life is exciting enough. Das Boot is probably the best submarine movie ever made and they didn't need crazy special effects and a predictable heroic storyline to do it. There are so many unbelievable true stories that should be portrayed in film but we keep getting stupid multi million dollar marvel cash cows.

My father, who was in US submarines during World War II, considered Das Boot (The Boat) to be the most realistic submarine movie he'd ever seen. He told me: "It was a different navy in a different ocean but I knew what was going on and I knew why it was happening." IIRC sub captain usually get along more with their crew because basically inside the sub there's no separation between officers and crew, unlike in surface Ships. I remember things from laconia series that basically said, "a lone man in a sub is a dead man".

I'm a Navy veteran but I was on a carrier, the USS Enterprise (CVN-65) from 1996 to 1999, and then a CG, guided missile cruiser, the USS Gettysburg. I have mad respect for bubble heads. I worked at a VA hospital years ago and a fellow nurse was a career bubble head, he did 24 years and exclusively sub duty, all Boomers (ballistic missile subs) he retired as a Master Chief Machinist Mate. David recognizes creative licensing while also giving an informed opinion at the same time, which makes the review so much better. Well the K14 review was actually not that accurate. The crew of the K14 actually feared a nuclear explosion, so that part alone is accurate. Also a nuclear reactor can explode, which actually was a concern on the K14 because if your reactor overheats sooner or later it will evaporate the cooling water which can lead to an explosion or if it is hot enough water will be split into oxygen and hydrogen which are highly explosive. Whether it would detonate the other war heads is hard to say, but keep in mind that this incident happened in 1961, so it had a reactor and war heads with 1950s russian technology, which is not that reassuring.

I think nuclear sub crew officers (in all countries that have em) are almost universally super smart and well-read, cerebral, sophisticated etc. It's the branch that selects for it, as well as quality people skills, because it's a requirement to manage several dozen highly specialized professionals plus a mob of normal sailors for three months to a year in a sealed can, and keep them happy and responsible

It's neat to see how folks pick up on leadership qualities in others and I think you're on the mark about him. He wrote a really clear leadership/management book called Turn the Ship Around about how he democratized the decision making process for chain of command in the fleet so that folks who are closest to the information can be empowered to decide and act on what they need to do. Apparently he turned the USS Sante Fe from the worst performing submarine in the fleet when he took command of it into the best during his tenure and his methods are now the standard.

I agree with everything that Captain Marquet said about those sub movies, including the part about the guy drinking a beer while submerged within the sub. In the mid-1960s I was a crew member serving TAD aboard the nuke sub, USS Shark (SSN591), which was chasing after a Russian nuke sub (it's what we do) at high speed, about 200' deep in the Eastern Atlantic. We were speeding so fast and our sonar was unable to actually hear anything. I was standing listlessly behind a round plastic board called the time bearing plot, without sonar input, when the PPI (planned position indictor, or sonar screen) operator screamed into his 7MC to the Con: (sic) "Con, sonar, submarine passing hard to port, distance uncertain." The entire left side of his PPI was indicating a very close contact. It had turned white. It all happened so fast that none of us reacted in any significant manner except for the ship's captain who ordered an immediate 'right full rudder to enable our rapid removal from the scene. When we finally picked up his sounds he was headed toward Ireland. It was another 'Whew" moment for me. Sub sailors commonly referred to that maneuver by the Ruskies as a "Crazy Ivan." I wished they would've done the scene from hunter killer where they basically parked on the sea floor to see his reaction. I burst out laughing when I watched it underway. Submarine CO's are some of the coolest people in the fleet. My last commander actually did a back to back bsp when my wife had an emergency c section to get me home to her. We literally got to the dive point after a bsp where my buddy got off for his wife, and then the message came through and my captain turned right back around just to make sure I made it back in time. he was an attack boat skipper those are not ballistic missile boats. They don't normally have Nuclear Weapons on board. Modern Nuclear Subs are split between Attack Boats (built for speed, silence, and carrying torpedoes, missiles and mines) and Ballistic Missile Boats or "Boomers" which carry Nuclear ICBMs and are basically under water missile silos.

Das Boot is based on a novel and when it came out in Germany, every U-Boat Veteran alive was invited to see it for free. Many of them had to leave mid-movie as it became so realistic it started to stir up old memories. Also during the course of the war the term "der Alte" (the old man) became more of an ironic nickname on German submarines - as even the Commanders often were merely in their mid-20s and ended up commanding a bunch of teenagers due to the ridiculous losses the Kriegsmarine suffered from 1943 onward.

When D-Day veterans came to see the movie, some of them had to leave halfway through the movie because it's too realistic to the point that it gives them terrible flashbacks. I think the VA had to establish a hotline for veterans who saw the movie and were traumatised by it.

The hunt for red October is based on a true story too, except it wasn't a submarine it was a soviet destroyer in Lithuania. It wasn't the CO who staged the mutiny it was the political officer, he wanted to sail the soviet navies newest most advanced destroyer into leningrad harbor, today saint Petersburg and start a new communist revolution against the current communist at the time. Unfortunately the staffed the destroyer with mig 17s and when they surrendered the political officer and all officers who supported him were executed the others were sent to labor camps.

Germany has some of the best horrors of War books written All quiet on the Western front,which there are already to US made films of , and believe there is now an Germany language version in production. Hollywood offered to produce DAS Boot .but the Directors did not want the film to have to be changed for their market. It was also planed to be a lot longer hence why it was shown as a TV series in most countries.

And that makes it *very* difficult to maintain the engine, as the Russians found out with frequent coolant leaks and one reactor freezing and breaking while out at sea. Which is why the idea of liquified lead was abandoned.

One of my coolest medevacs in an ancient HH52A took place off of Washington state. We were tasked with meeting a Los Angeles class sub at a very specific time and location to medivac one of the crew. We established a tight orbit around the lat/long and very promptly the sub popped up to the surface, quickly hoisted the crewman up and in a very short time that sub was gone. Watching a sub rise to the surface at open sea was as cool as flying around the Goodyear blimp while airborne. A once in a lifetime perspective.

Respect. Was a Trauma Center EMT looong ago (St Luke's of K.C.). Big transplant center too, so reason for a lot of air transports via helo; the classic LifeFlights of the mid-80s, I believe. Giant hospital; had to be 20 floors high (? seemed more). FD blocked the flanking downtown street so the helicopter could drop down to land in the street between that massive building, power lines and near-100 foot old growth oaks, etc (? big hardwoods, hey) lining the park across the street. I did nothing more than push gurneys or haul equipment but, esp at night, it impressed me to the core and even now in crystal recall seems like a Technicolor fantasy. Helped convince me I had stumbled into the right field as well. Out of it now with too much yammer, no regrets, miss the ... activity ... but landed on a remote Montana farm, which provides enough activity as it is. Cheers.

There was a stream explosion followed by, what some scientist theorize based on the data, a low yield nuclear explosion. Of course I'm not a physicist so I'm not sure. It wouldn't make any difference in a submarine though, the explosion would rupture the hull and all of the radioactive fuel would be exposed to the sea.

I am dated, graduated sub school the day Thresher went down. When she reached crush depth I thought there was a giant water slug that went thru the boat acting as a piston in a hydraulic system. Heat/pressure some charring from the photo's I seen. Also, she only had two real watertight compartments. Interesting video. Das Boat was filmed in a mockup of a boat's actual size and the actors lived aboard it. My first boat, Rusher, diesel, DBFE, so I can relate to the sailors. Then went to nuke school and sailed in the hotels, SSBN618 and 620. Well done sir, MMCS(SW)(SS) USN Ret. a long time ago.

I do chuckle these days, when I overhear more “modern” sailors telling someone how it is, versus how it was. All the movies and PR footage show modern sailers in matching uniforms, with fresh haircuts. My memories of a fast attack underway were mismatched uniforms, beards and scraggly haircuts. Then, with all the uniform changes in the 70s, you could stand 20 random sub sailors up in the mess decks and no 2 would necessarily be in matching uniforms. Once the hatches were closed, we wore whatever footwear that pleased us. Half the crew wore just a poopy suit and didn’t wear underwear. Those that wore poopy suits could muster 3 or 4 styles and multiple colors, depending on long they had served. We had both dungarees and utilities to pick from and those came in long and short sleeves, some had pullover styles, too. You had white hats, ships logo ball caps or plain Navy covers to pick from. There were the old blue utility jackets, new black jackets (once Navy Blues became black) foul weather green and the old OD Green pullover sweaters for outerwear. My first chief wore dad slippers and would say it was because he was getting ready for his retirement. We were anything but uniform, except maybe for our 1000 yard stares from lack of sleep during a WestPac and pale completions after a month or 2 submerged.

Reactors don't. Their coolant systems do. On top of that, submarine reactors and shore reactors are two different beasts. Submariners like to joke that, actually, submarines are steam-powered. Because, truthfully, they are. In its most basic form: hot rock make steam, steam make boat go. The reactor is merely a contained heating/cooling process to create steam by using radiation. That steam is transported mostly to turn turbines which turn the shaft and thus propeller (as well as generate electricity for other systems). That steam cools and then condensates to begin the process all over again. On subs the steam system and reactor system are two isolated systems, so it's not necessary for the submarine to have a robust cooling system in part for 2 reasons: 1, American reactors are designed in such a way as to stop the chain reaction of energy in case of a runaway reactor, and 2, the ocean (in which the submarine is submerged) is the best coolant system available to a submarine, so the ocean is used as part of the cooling process to condensate that steam. Shore reactors have to have robust cooling systems because they don't have the luxury of being entirely submerged in a constantly refreshing supply of cool water. Additionally, the Soviets notoriously cut corners when building their reactors in order to minimize costs and overhead. As such, the "American" reactors were more expensive because it was more of a process to manufacture and train and implement their meltdown-proof reactors. But with the Soviet ones, they took the risk of an unlikely meltdown in order to save money. Even in the Soviets' case, reactors still don't explode. That's not how reactors work. When reactors "runaway" or "meltdown" it indicates a compounding effect of their nature - radiation. Normally that radiation is controlled and exploited to transfer that energy to other systems to safely produce electricity. A runaway is the loss of control of how much energy the reactor is generating and is over-powering of those various sub-systems. When reactors "explode", it's always their sub-systems. Mostly their cooling ones because that's what happens when you heat up a liquid - it turns to steam and inside the confines of its container essentially turns into a giant bomb.

@@TheChivalricKnight Ah but that is the problem with almost all nuclear power plants today they are almost all based on US naval reactors because the navy put in the money to develop them. The square-cube law works against large reactors. Small reactors like the Nuscale designs make much more sense, or Thorium based reactors. also reactors can explode, indirectly, due to the neutrons separating hydrogen and oxygen in water and making an explosive gas normally the pressure of the cooling system prevents the individual gasses from being gas like CO2 in soft drinks, and giving time they recombine but when released it can be explosive. Separately The US submarine that ran aground was going about 30 knots when it hit an undersea mount that the mapmakers the US submarines use the maps from hadn't updated them for that area north of Australia due to budget issues. Where as the sub in the bond movie looked like it was going 10-15.

At the time the book was written the book did not use that stupid stunt. I was on the Original LA SSN688, and we did those missions. Even had to sign the paper work that said, and I shit you not "If caught or captured your actions will be disavowed by the U.S. Government, and you will not be rescued. By the time book was written, I had left the Sub and was working for the U.S. Government designing them in Cali but it was like being on duty again, that how real it felt. The movie was otherwise very true to the book.

Sunken ships are perfectly preserved on the sea floor of the Black Sea. They recovered a Greek Merchent vessel from like ciece 500-700 BCE in near perfect condition. That's 2500+ year old all wood vessel. Even it's cargo was recovered.

Minor point from a former Navy reactor operator: The idea of increasing reactor power another 5% is mathematically useless. While bored underway, we did some numbers and assumed some design specs to have huge safety margins. Basically, the old theory of 4x to 8x power to create 2x speed. In reality on our boat, you would have to push the reactor beyond it's SCRAM setting to even attempt to get half a knot additional speed. Basically, the math says you would be melting the fuel rods before you ever noticed a significant speed change. (assuming you disabled ALL reactor safety functions)

Definitely! This was always my issue with this scene - 5% difference in power at those power levels doesn't really matter - especially in an emergency, you're not gaining anything useful (power/speed-wise) and definitely adding risk.

Not to mention the misunderstanding that there is some switch or dial we can just use to up the power of the reactor, and that will just make things go faster. "Reactor power follows steam demand". It's not the reactor power that is the deciding factor in how fast the ship goes, it's the amount of steam being supplied to the main engines. If you have the throttle full open, you've maxed out how much steam you will be supplying. And all throttles opened wide was still well below 100% power for us, granted that's because I was on a carrier and we needed to save extra power for the steam spikes of cat shots, not sure how it works on subs, but the principle is still there.

I love this guy, because he nailed it. Having spent 4 years in the submarine service, I've experienced running "aground" at 450 feet. Fortunately, we weren't going that fast and there was significant damage to the hull, but no injuries. Plus, he got it right in pronouncing the word submariner correctly, it's sub-"marine"-er. And "Das Boot" (German for "The Boat") is the greatest sub movie there is. It's sad at the end of the movie, but "c'est la guerre".

Utterly ridiculous his low rating of Crimson Tide. He made no mention of the fact that Denzel's response is plenty realistic if the Captain tried to launch nukes on his own accord. His position is that the the Sub Captain would simply never try to do that, but there is no way to know what a Captain might do if facing nuclear annihilation of the USA.

@@Redmanticore i agree in principle but das boot is a bad example. for the english version the original cast most did the english overdub, and they worked very hard to make the translations and performances as identical as possible. also a lot of the movie in german is overdubbed anyway because audio quality in the sub they built sucked.

k19 the Widowmaker they changed it it's from a Tom Clancy book and based on a true story what actually happened on the Russian sub was the seal for the missile on the exterior Hall formed a leak and the saltwater coming down interacted with the propellant in the missile and the good old communist Soviet system they designed the missiles on their subs the the propellant for the missiles if it interacted with salt water would blow up. Not too bright but that was the Communist way

He was a Los Angeles class captain, not an Ohio class captain. Those are rare, if not ever carrying a nuclear warhead on their tomahawks, vs an Ohio class that carries the SLBM. On a submarine, the launch is carried out by the weapons officer, not the captain, by pulling a trigger.

I heard an ex-U-boat commander on Das Boot who said it had two errors: torpedoes being used on the merchant ship (they’d use the deck gun) and the Nazi officer - the way he put it was “we might have left with him but he wouldn’t be coming back”
