The late Carl Sagan himself said that using unmanned craft for space exploration wasn't only cheaper and safer than manned machines but the better alternative. Perhaps drones could also save the lives of airmen in some instances.

I like how the MQ-8C is simply the Bell 206 platform getting recycled once again. It seems to be a reliable enough and proven aircraft (also in the military with a variant as the OH-58 Kiowa), so making it autonomous is likely straight forward and the airframe already has a stockpile of available support parts.

The MQ-25 has yet to launch from or trap on a CVN. The earliest that was scheduled to occur was 2026 and will likely be delayed even longer due to the recent IG report on component obsolescence that is delaying the start of LRIP. NAVAIR proves yet again that it still doesn't have its act together.

The US Navy really needs this to give the F-35 C the mission range to be useful in the China-Pacific Area. No matter how advanced the avionics and weapons capabilities are on an aircraft platform if you have a compromised F-135 engine (due to Marine F-35 B Vertical takeoff version) that hurts the range, the aircraft that can’t make it to the fight is not useful & therefore not a deterrent!

@@matt89108 I far as I know the Navy is working on getting the MQ-25A Stingray deployed but the date has been pushed to 2026 Following Manufacturing Delays. The F-35 C really needs a stealthy aerial refueling tanker to prop up the limitations of the F-135 engine. Until a new (or upgraded) engine is finalized (which appears to be in the works) the stealthy tanker is very important & even afterwards it is very important to be able to operate in the Chinese area.

I'm not sure I like the idea of an aircraft taking off, completing a mission and landing with no human interaction. If it were programmed to go to a specific point, identify it's rendezvous partner to deliver fuel and return to point a, it may be okay. But to tell it to go to approximately somewhere and do that? I just don't know.
