US universities losing hundreds of billions as top Chinese scientists and researchers go home

Research and Development (R&D) is a major profit center for the top universities in the United States. Besides the nearly $100 billion they earn in grants from the US government and private sources, university-based researchers create patents and inventions that generate many more billions annually.
China is the largest foreign source of scientists and researchers, and they are concentrated in the hard sciences and in engineering, where over 95% of R&D spending takes place. But since 2018, Chinese scientists are increasingly deciding to return to China to set up new research departments. Of those who are still in the US, over 60% admit they are strongly considering moving, and over half now refuse to work on projects that involve funding by US government sources.
To American universities, the loss of these scientists, along with future contributions to scientific research and commercial applications and market value, are incalculable. But losses probably already exceed a trillion dollars, given the departures of so many top scientists in Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, medicine, biochemistry, materials science, nanotechnology, and quantum computing.

A century ago, the USA was considered a land of opportunity. You could have a crazy idea, set up shop, and sell gizmos. Let the market decide whether your stuff is good or not. Now, China has taken that crown. Too much interference from federal busybodies ruined the dream. In China, you will never be the next Tencent or AliBaba, but that's not the point. There are entire frontiers opening up, and China will pounce on these opportunities.

Kevin, a better way of looking at this is by looking at the traditional breakdown between basic and applied research. Basically, organizations like the US govt leave basic research to the Universities, then take that and operationalize it so to speak. This is where the national labs or corporations come in. So the big problem is that not only is basic research being done at Chinese universities, but applied research is integrated as well. So not only does integrated supply chains refer to physical products, but also to knowledge as well.

What strikes me most of this is the "pull and push" factors. What has frustrated so many in the U.S. is our inability to find people of like mind and intelligence to interact with. How many of us sit at home studying, reading, writing, reduced to ruminating with our own souls because there is simply no one we can share with. From science to literature, history, religion, the challenges and blessings of daily life, we're only able to connect online. Rare is the friendship that goes deeper now.

Not just Chinese researchers and scientists are leaving, many talented White Americans are going too. Why? In Shenzen, it takes as little as 2 weeks from the design phase to the actual production. China is that quick.

The Writing was on "The Wall " in 2022 when scientific Papers Published by Reputable Institutions slowly became dominated by Chinese Universities. Already 80% of Critical Areas of Scientific Research for the FUTURE came from Chinese Universities (2024). And who are the Professors, Scientist, etc who Wrote These Papers /Research ...??? Many are those who RETURN to China after .... " US China initiative in 2021/22 " . What surprised me was that those Universities/Companies ( Google/Intel/etc ) ... KEPT QUITE about it. !!!!! Even thought they KNEW the Consequences. Or did the Media "Kept it Hush Up"???

You don’t even have to be from China. Chinese scientists would be wise to leave if they can find a better job outside U.S. . And foreign students pay higher tuition. So the bright side is the smart Asian Americans may get fair school admission instead of being rejected for being too Asians. But the down side they may also leave to other countries.

Another pressing issue here is that we value sports and entertainment as much as we value our researchers and scientists. This should never be the case. Entertainment and sports should be almost at the bottom of the totem pole. The pay of sports employees and entertainers should never be more than what researchers and scientists in stem and related fields make. 20 million +/ year for a good athlete to get a bal in a hole or pass a line isnjust absurd and shows where our real values are- in the bottom of the trash heap.

I can share my experience with a business school masters program (non-MBA): 3-4 years ago, around 30% of the overall class came from China, or about 40 students in total This year, only 2-3 kids from mainland China, and 3-4 from Taiwan. The number of Chinese students has been completely replaced by Indian students, who now fill up that 30% One would figure that in a couple decades that India will start to have its own crop of competitive universities. They’re clearly becoming rich enough to send their kids to private colleges overseas. Then what are we gonna do?
@DylanF.B
@DylanF.B 2 сағат бұрын
Well depends if it’s a diploma mill those Indian students will be there to work instead of studying This is Australia but it’s the same where I live in Canada And same where you live I’m sure 👇 Chinese students are exports, Indian students are imports Leith van Onselen Thursday 9 May 2024 * A recent Navitas survey of study intentions discovered that students from South Asia and Africa choose a study destination based on their capacity to gain job rights, a low-cost course, and permanent residency. South Asia and Africa care about work and migration, not education quality. In contrast, students from these two continents are least concerned about educational quality. All source nations, with the exception of students from China and Europe, place a high value on opportunities to work while studying and post-study job privileges. As illustrated in the following graphic, Australia has had the largest growth in student numbers from nations that support themselves through paid employment, whereas only one-fifth of Chinese students do the same As a result, the concept of international education ‘exports’ only truly applies to Chinese students, who typically pay their tuition and living costs in Chinese currency rather than work income earned in Australia. As explained by Associate Professor Salvatore Babones in his latest book “Australia’s Universities, Can They Reform“: “In reality, everyone (except perhaps the government and the universities) knew that many international students pay for their courses out of the proceeds of their work in-country, often working excessive hours under exploitative conditions, in violation of their visa terms”. * This situation is especially common among South Asian students, and is reflected in the steep fall-off in South Asian student numbers when teaching moved online”. “With prospective students unable to rely on employment income in Australia to support their studies, new commencements of Indian students at Australian higher education providers fell 65% between 2019 and 2021; for Nepali students, the decline was 37%; for Pakistanis, 45%; for Sri Lankans, 54%”. “These countries are simply too poor to send large cohorts of international students to Australian universities based on family resources alone”. “For many South Asian students, a student visa is a very expensive but thinly disguised work visa”. By contrast, Chinese university students, who mainly enrol in Group of Eight universities and leave Australia at the conclusion of their studies, are considered to be at low risk of abusing the visa system. Let’s be honest for a moment. If work rights and permanent residency were scaled back, the numbers of students arriving from non-Chinese source nations would collapse. MacroBusiness

SG is successful primarily due to our ethnic Chinese majority. Because of geopolitical realities, SG is fond of placing vocal Indian leaders on the frontline to mask our majority ethnic Chinese composition. But when the real crunch comes e.g. Covid pandemic, who do we fall back on? Only the really capable and trustworthy ones step up to the plate like Lawrence Wong, Ong Ye Kung, Chan Chun Sing etc. On the other hand, consider a hypothetical leadership comprising only the likes of Tharman, Iswaran, Vivian Balakrishnan, Janil Puthucherry, Shanmugam, Pritam Singh. What happens? You get such impressive speeches in Parliament and in the media so that the average SG IQ might seem to hit the roof at 140. But then, in a period of crisis or even in peaceful times, I believe SG collapses irreversibly in 2 weeks' time!
