In case you've ever wondered how that expression "Dragging someone's good name through the mud" all started, it's actually partly due to the assassination of Pres. Lincoln. It started when a doctor named "Samuel Mudd" was tried, convicted, & incarcerated for allegedly being John W. Booth's co-conspirator. Although, it was founded that the evidence was all circumstantial. And, even though he was eventually pardoned from prison, it still didn't make any difference whatsoever, for even now, his name still resides in infamy.
