Russia stood by India in 1971 while West stood by Pakistan in liberation of Bangladesh war. US sent its 7th fleet to aid Pakistan and UK sent its navy. Both were intercepted by Soviet Nuclear submarines and forced to withdraw. India has a debt of gratitude to Russia which we shall always bear.

USSR had fought the Germans almost single handedly, a fact that was hidden from us in our schools and all hollywood films obviously depicted how west fought the WW2 single handedly. Then USSR gave all help unconditionaly for industrial development. So many steel plants, power plants, and allued units. All in rupee trade.

It cannot be said as unprovoked and therefore not unjust. NATO kept expanding to Russian borders and that is provocative. Ukraine wanted to bring NATO to Russian doorstep, and the euro maiden protest talks largely about the neighbourly relations between Russia and Ukraine. So can't definitely call it unprovoked specially since Russia agreed to dissolution of Warsaw pact and NATO was promised to not expand and dissolve. Regarding India Russia friendship, it's history, alliance, people to people connection, sharing if technology and weaponry requirements fulfilled by Russia. US on the other hand always helped Pakistan and provided them weapons and money while sanctioning India for becoming a nuclear power and denied weapons. US doesn't stand a ground to lecture India or Russia on any front.
