Honestly I liked the strategy. He is the "lesser" player in this case. Lengthening the game only benefits spellman. He gave himself a shot late to win that leg. If he closes that 18 with the 16's and 15's he probably wins the leg

These boards are frequently rotated so the same treble segment isn’t worn away too quickly. Greatly increases the longevity of the board.
