Assigned there from 2007-2011, Logistics Readiness Squadron/Vehicle Maintenance Flight. Loved our time there. We had lived in Lakenheath Village for the first year and eventually moved in to what was new housing after I came back from my deployment to Iraq. We had a three bedroom home.

A few points. 1. Many British homes have built in closets, especially newer build houses. 2. We have no plug sockets in the bathrooms because we aren’t big fans of electrocution. 3. Unusual to see a fully tiled downstairs. Carpet is generally more common, or laminate. 4. Why don’t Americans dry their clothes outside? Seems bizarre to use a dryer when it’s bright and sunny outside. 5. Fly screens should be fitted on all UK homes. So sick of wasps and flies getting into my house in the summer.

UK bedrooms do have closets, not sure what kind of house you lived in?? But I live in a 60s built house where every room has a closet. If they built them back then into every bedroom im sure the new houses also have them
@tomthornton62593 жыл бұрын
Depends on the house. I think most in the last 60/70 years have them in the larger bedrooms, but less so in the smaller ones. In terms of general storage alot of houses have a cupboard (closet) under the stairs, or an equivalent somewhere else, and sometimes a small linen cupboard. But alot of people use their attic, and even shed/s to store alot of stuff!
@patriciaburke66394 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, in the U.K. once a plot of land is designated to build ‘affordable’ housing for the general public, building spacious homes is not a consideration by the builders. The smaller the homes and the closer they are together, means more can fit on the available land and a bigger profit can be made from the extra sales. These 4 bedroom homes built for the Military on Lakenheath, are certainly built to a much higher specification and greater size than the average ‘new’ 4 bedroom house built for the U.K. public, which also cost a lot of money. Apparently, we have the smallest, yet most expensive homes in Europe, aren’t we lucky! Sad to think you have left us, but I am happy that it appears that the last 6 years have not been a bad experience for you and your family and hopefully in the months to come there may be things you really, really miss, that you might like to share with us at some time. In the meantime, keep your masks on and keep safe.
@richardturner93173 жыл бұрын
That's not quite how things work ! Planning over a certain number of new dwellings will include a provision for 'affordable' housing that is designed to allow local residents the opportunity to 'afford' to buy properties in the areas in which they live. This is especially useful in rural areas or in areas which are popular with 'incomers' for 2nd homes etc. Developers may try to opt out of such provisions by making a compensation payment to the local authority. There is also an uncomfortable fact that people spending large amounts on a house & home will not generally wish to live in proximity with 'affordable' homes and the developers will want to develop 'either or' rather than a mix for issues of saleability :(

Unfortunately having driven for 90 minutes to get there from Southwold where we were staying the base had been placed on 'lockdown' as there was a mission on for Iraq ! In the local town we did get great 'American' style sandwiches from the cafes that obviously had learned to accommodate for American tastes [and waistlines] !

You are not correct about built in closets. UK homes generally do have them in modern homes. Of course older homes usually do not have them unless they have been fitted. Bear in mind a lot of homes in the UK are hundreds of years old but have mostly been modernised.

My daughter, her hubby & children moved from Leicester to Portsmouth a few years ago & she told me army houses have to be in exactly the same condition when you move out as they were when you moved in. So it's best not to go drilling holes for nails to hang pictures. If you paint it, you have to re paint in exactly the same shade, which she got from the base before she moved. But she knows exactly how you feel about changing things around. She said its tiresome putting it back. She likes to visit friends so she could get away from the house as its boring.
@travelingfamilyoffive3 жыл бұрын
She’s correct. That rule is the same for on base and off base. We were aloud to hang pics etc on Lakenheath, but when we lived off base we couldn’t put any holes in the wall and had to repaint and clean the carpet when we moved out. Moving can be a hassle lol.

One thing that horrifies me - especially with America being such a litiginous society - is American cookers ( stoves ) having the controls at the rear of the appliance. This means reaching across red hot electric ring plates , boiling or frying food or open gas flames to adjust the switches . Particularly for a shorter person .

You are right. It happens in that states as well, the only difference is our parking spots are bigger (for door room) and there’s more options so you can possibly park away from the crowd. But somehow a random buggy (trolley) can find its way to the car 🤣🤦♀️
@dantaylor73444 жыл бұрын
@@travelingfamilyoffive Yeah! It's infuriating but that's humans. I'd hoped my fellow Brits would do the honorable and right thing by owning up to anything like that but I won't hold my breath. As you know as a family now, the UK is tiny, about 525 miles as the crow flies from north to south, when a local council agrees planning permission for a supermarket the space is minimised for cars as it's "wasted" space, no food items can go there, no trolleys can go there, it's basically buying open land that will have concrete on it. That's it, so UK supermarkets loathe to offer bigger parking bays at the cost of shelf space. I think the state of Oklahoma is bigger than the whole UK to give some perspective.

We’re a family of 5 as well but they’re younger (4yo girl, 3yo boy, and 10mo girl) do you happen to know if we would also qualify for a 4 bedroom house? I’ve heard that since they’re younger we won’t qualify for separate rooms for the girls. Also how long did you have to wait in TLF before you were able to get a home? If you’ve already answered things like this I’m sorry! I just happened to find this video! Thanks!

No worries, I would still apply for the 4 bedroom house but the waitlist that you e heard about is REAL! The bigger homes have about a year waitlist. We was offered housing in another location (but I think they’re getting rid of that) and we denied it. We lived off base for 2 years before getting on Lakenheath. As far a hoe long in TLF- about 3 weeks. It’s ALOT when you first arrive(not just housing) so they give you a little time. Best of luck! I have lots of videos from our time there. So in Britain, they build massive American style homes for Americans living here. , but UK Brits get pokey tiny houses with no storage, how is that fair. i did think the house looked very Americanised in terms of storage and bigger appliances, why can't Britain make all new builds this size for everyone.
@travelingfamilyoffive3 жыл бұрын
Because it’s American dollars building these homes on base. Some homes in the UK are bigger as well. I’ve been in a few. Not as common though. Just not enough land for big homes in the UK
@halloweenville13 жыл бұрын
@@travelingfamilyoffive Oh that would explain it, , but the UK has around 95% empty land to build on, we measure our homes by how many rooms you can fit into a unit, where most other countries measure by floor space, in the UK we have tons of empty countryside to build bigger homes, but our government is more interested in profit, and how many pokey bedsits they can fit into a normal family sized home. you have to be rich to afford an average country house with garden and garage all to yourself in this country, i would love to live in an American suburbia, the houses have there own plot of land, and everything is newer and cleaner, and you don't bankrupt yourself for wanting a decent size home.
