Best tartan ever: Sea Dog Bamse, which was named for a dog that worked for the Norwegian military in WWII. Also, didn't know Eric did SCA. Props!

Rocky, without companies like yours, there are people in Scotland that would be out of work because you connect with customers in a respectful way and sell product made in Scotland. What I find 'disrespectful" for example, is clothiers who say their products are "Harris tweed" but are actually not and are selling cheaply made tweed from elsewhere. Keep up the good work.

I was wondering, are they legally allowed to do that? Or is it just a difficult thing to get shut down?
@davidsheerin10295 жыл бұрын
@@RickBrode No, Harris Tweed is a legally protected trademark, so they aren't allowed to use that term if the cloth does not originate in the Outer Hebrides (Harris Tweed means a tweed which has been hand woven by the islanders at their homes in the Outer Hebrides, finished in the islands of Harris, Lewis, North Uist, Benbecula, South Uist and Barra and their several purtenances (The Outer Hebrides) and made from pure virgin wool dyed and spun in the Outer Hebrides). Genuine Harris Tweed will bear the Harris Tweed Orb to prove authenticity and there is a legal body that protects the definition of the Harris Tweed brand - you should report counterfeit goods/sellers as they are damaging the livlihoods of highly skilled cottage industry workers.

Love what you guys are doing, what you provide is quality and knowledge. I had my kilt made by a kilt maker in a small shop in Peterhead recently and it is a work of art and will be an heir loom. As for the Royal mile at the lower part there is a prestigious kilt maker but nearer the castle it is purely for the tourist. You guys should be proud of what you are doing.

Gordon Nicholson I think you are thinking of, they expanded not that long ago with two shops now, the original still in the Cannongate which is for sales and one next to the World's end for hire. Their product is fantastic, all handmade and he has opened the only kiltmaking academy in Edinburgh. They recently teamed up with Blues and Browns to promote traditional craftmanship and methods which have been declining.

I must admit, recently I discovered a biological father I was unaware of, (iam 49).. In the search, I have uncovered my lineage to Glenshee in the 1500's.. cool, as a former Marine, I have always thought the Highlanders to be badass. So, I bought, finally, a "tactical" badass kilt.. However, I have stumbled across your vids and you two have inspired me to educate myself regarding even more kilts and Scottish culture! You guys do a great job with your vids. Would like to see a number of your kilts on vid, as the website doesnt do justice.. you guys look great and present that culture fantastically well. Thanks guys.

I am in the process of getting a tartan pattern registered on behalf of one of the groups within the Masonic family. The colors I chose have meaning and ties to Masonic things, specifically in the Scottish Rite. To me it is a worthwhile venture with ties to Scotland. Having a tartan registered in remembrance to a deceased pet is touching, but stretching it a bit and I'm a dog guy. Only one man's opinion though! Thanks for all the information you put in your videos.

The name Jimmy was at one time used as a common form of addressing strangers, similar in a way to the american use of the word 'buddy' . This was particularly common practice in the Glasgow area. In the 1980's an English comedian called Russ Abbot had a sketch show and one of his regular comic characters was an exaggerated stereotype of a Scot who wore the cap / ginger wig combo and used the term 'Jimmy' when addressing anyone. This is when the term 'jimmy hat' came into being. Most Scottish members of his audience found this fairly amusing and the hat was adopted by many football fans at international matches or occasional fancy dress in the spirit of self deprecating humour.
@Beardychiel5 жыл бұрын
The origin is specifically in the phrase, "see you Jimmy"as a precursor to initiating a fight with a stranger in Glasgow where any man you don't know is simply called Jimmy. I was born and bred in Maryhill in Glasgow and have been in lots of situations where I've seen this happen, unfortunately. The Russ Abbot's use of the character Jimmy is quite right I remember it well.

In Glasgow and of a certain generation.. if you don't know a blokes name you would... for example need to know the time you'd say 'hey, Jimmy, what's the time pal?' It replaces in England the word Mate or Pal or Mack

Listening to your argument at the 37:00 minute mark about Tourist traps selling cheap merchandise I tend to argue that the onus is on the individual to know that tourist shops generally sell low quality items and to remember " you get what you pay for " and that these places are NOT specialty shops . My first " kilt" is a cheap ( probably $ 50-60 in the USA ) one I bought at a highland games and knew I was not buying a real kilt even though I had done no research before hand . Too many people close their eyes and want a cheap purchase to somehow be a quality item or just don't recognize quality or lack thereof . I put a lot of faith and goodwill onto the type of shop you guys run as it should be but tourist stalls are just... well....for tourists .
@thomaspatton44014 жыл бұрын
A good rule of thumb is that if you visit one of these 'shops' or better, 'stalls' or 'Tents' at a festival, if you ask them for a specific tartan, say MacLean of Duart for instance, and they look at each other as if to ask; What is he talking about? and then tell you, "No, we don't carry that one." Then you name about three or four others and they don't carry those either, chances are really good that they are just vendors selling stock that they have no knowledge of Clan tartans and chances are equally as good that the material that their kilts are made from will be a really cheap wool wanna-be material that will fall apart within weeks after your purchase. (Caviot Emptor, Let the buyer Beware!) best to save your money and steer way clear of them. It pays to do your research first and pay attention to what is being said and how it is said. Usually they will tell on themselves without even realizing it. The Ohio Dublin Irish Festival has in the past had at least one or two vendors like that, (present company excepted of course.) However, the true kilt maker, (present company accepted for instance) will have the knowledge of the Clans and Tartan materials and have the reputation and Pro-standing to back it up. USA Kilt masters! Rock On!;)

@widowrumstrypze97053 жыл бұрын
I remember hearing something about this one! The company called it "Scotch" tape because they only used a tiny amount of glue on the cellophane, making it less gooey than it's competitor's. It was cheaper to make, and Scots are notorious for being frugal, so: "Scotch tape". It's actually a pejorative! That would explain why over in the UK they call it "cellotape". I know this reply is WAY late in coming, nobody will probably ever see it, lol.

The thing is, and I've actually contacted them on this, you can register anytime you want. But the classification you registered under is controlled. Nobody can register a clan tartan except for the clan chief, and acting clan commander if there is no chief, or a recognized and authorized clan Society. Other than that if you wanna register it for a business, you have to have authorization from somebody that can approve it. Anybody can register a fashion or family tartan/personal Tartan, but not everybody can register clan tartans and tartans for specific organizations and institutions. When the Scottish tartan authority or whatever you wanna call it was rolled into the Scottish restaurant tartans, what they did though was they took some personal tartans and recognized him arbitrarily as clan Tartans. This is what happened to my client. Somebody in 2004 had a Tartans custom design for them and it was done by a professional designer utilizing colors from the various clans some of my clan members where Septs of. And for some reason, somehow they decided when they rolled it all into one they were going to make this a clan tartan. Even though nobody approved it, nobody of an official or authorized clan, body of authority or organization ever approved it.

I think that companies need to be able to protect their tartan because they can be used to slander that company. Tartans created by people to remember their loved ones are what the original Titans were created for the fact that somebody did it for his dog cool must been really awesome dog. I don't think that it cheapens the history behind The Tartan and the Scottish Clans that claim them. If anything it just adds extra depth to it.

My clans are O'Gallagher , McCort/McCourt, Butler and I say to hell with the crown , they have no right to have a tartan. I'm very proud of where my family came from and they fought against the British, 4th great grandparents came to America cause the british would have persecuted them. I guess I'm oldschool when I say people should to at least try and wear their family or county tartan. There should be a historical fondness and respect for where our families came from and what they did years ago. Another thing I find hilarious is a cousin of mine ( from America) married what I guess they call a royal ) what no way, any ways he gave up the throne for her, but no one knows or talks about that hahaha dump the tea in the ocean

I have read about cultural appropriarion. This is an American phenomenon which has not yet hit this side of the Atlantic. If you want to be awkward, just google Samuel L Jackson in a kilt. Is this cultural appropriation? Does he have scottish origins? Can he wear a kilt? Of course he can for the following reasons: 1. We live in free countries. 2. He looks.completely badass in a kilt. 3. The scottish are not pussies. The culture is for all. You want to wear a kilt? Great!
