Which tartan weight should you consider when you order a custom-made kilt?
Then two most common weights are 13 oz. And 16 oz. Tartan is also often woven in 11 oz. Wool BUT this is primarily for women’s clothing or some homegoods and accessories.
Which weight of wool cloth is more durable?
Which weight of wool cloth looks better in motion?
Rocky explains.

@@jessedphillips I can understand that, though as a newer viewer myself with a habit for binging, it can become frustrating when I get a notification that's there's a new video only to turn out to be something I watched yesterday when I dug into their back catalogue

+USAKiltsOfficial *Thanks for the manufacturer perspective.* I've a contingency to draft concerning wool weights; 16Z makes sense for 4- and 5-yards; 13.5Z for 8-yards, waistcoats and jackets; 11Z for furnishings such as Windsor ties plus Aboyne gathered feminine skirts and spencers for Highland dance.

Love it, Great content. I live in Florida and had a few made for me, a 13 oz, 9 yard kilt, family tartan, yes I have an ass. It is so hot to wear in summer. Then had a 6 yard, 16 oz, made. Can definitely tell the difference in temp. Sett size is bigger on the 16 oz, as well.

I now have 11 kilts (all from USA Kilts) all five yarders and about 1/2 and 1/2 13 oz and 16 oz. I live in Las Vegas where the summer hot days are between 106 and 116 on any given day (but it's a dry heat!). I find the two weights equally wearable even in summer. I do a lot of hiking in Red Rock Canyon until June and Mt. Charleston after that. I don't see any particular advantage to either weight for hiking. I think an 8 yard kilt would be a bit much for hiking and summer wear for sure. BTW, on Mt Charleston at 8,300 elevation where my hikes start, it's about 80 degrees vs. 116 down in Las Vegas Valley. In winter we get snow, in fact right now I can't go up there because the roads are closed to all but residents except for the Lee Canyon Ski Area (yes, there is skiing in Las Vegas!). The avalanche risk is too high just now. They do manage that in Lee Canyon, but not Kyle.

I have only one 16 oz kilt. All the rest are 13 oz. Like the weight better and it downsizes the pattern a bit.

Heavier weight simply wears better -- I wouldn't wear anything lighter than 16 oz. no matter how hot the climate. I really love the old heavier military grade tartan, too! It's practically bullet-proof! I've never bothered with less than full kilts, so I can't comment on those kilts made with less material; but my *guess* is that a heavier weight fabric but less of it would be the best compromise if you're concerned about "heat". Artificial fabric is inherently hotter than wool, BTW.

5 yd, 8yd, 13 Oz, 16 Oz, and polivicus there's just so many choices. I just pick what looks good to me.

Whatever I can use to cover my face then, eh? Hey-oh! Seriously though, is it based mostly aesthetically, on the way it hangs? Do you have a preferred weight for comfort? Maybe depending on time of year?

@@jessedphillips I prefer 13 Oz for work,( truck driver). 16 Oz is mostly for looking nice at events I attend.

My question would be this. It’s 16 ounce really going to keep you that much warmer or hotter than 13 ounce in warm weather? Cause I mean I wore PV To a funeral in Los Angeles in the middle of summer, during the heat of the day on the blacktop and I was leaving puddles everywhere I went. I would just think that it really wouldn’t matter if you wore PV or 13 or 16 ounce, you’re just gonna get hot no matter what in the right circumstances. I can only see it really making a difference in cold weather. But I could be wrong

Wool is always going to be more comfortable than artificial fabrics, is the painful fact. Whatever the weight.

You know, coming back to this and doing some thinking. Unless you live in an arctic climate I don’t see 16 ounce really doing much for you. 13 ounce is pretty damn warm. Hell, I had PV on a hot California day and I was leaving a puddle under me. I’ve worn PV and wool on a cold day and they both did very well. The truth is unless you live in an extremely cold climate you’re not gonna need the 16 ounce I think. And then a lot of it’s gonna be up to the hose you wear has that’s part of your warmth layer
