I was the oldest of the group probably 16 at the time while everyone else was probably 10-12. Those boys handled the rifles properly, nothing wrong with learning how to shoot mate.

About that family case: Having a gun doesn't necessarily mean no bullet can hit you. You can fire back (or shoot first, as you suggested), but guns don't make you bullet-proof. The odds rising the danger are at least at par to the odds of successful defense, or even higher since most cases don't contain punk monsters.

If someone points his gun at someone else, the other one still has to reach to his gun, draw it, unlock it, point and then shoot and maybe hit. There's no way to do in a shorter time than the attacker needs to fire lots of shots.
