Some S160s are preserved in the United States. 610 at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum and 1702 at the Great Smokey Mountain Railroad being the most notable. The latter is currently in operating condition.
@YJRail8 ай бұрын
610 never actually left the US and isn't *technically* an S-160. BUT she was the last steam engine built for domestic use in the US, having been completed in March 1952.

@@YJRail 610 is what is known as the 2nd generation S160, the S160A. The Army referred to it as the Class A. The main difference between it and it’s predecessor S160 is a larger boiler diameter with a shorter length. And the domes are different. The S160As were to be sent to Korea for the war, but after the prototype, 610, was built, the Army decided to ditch steam and send diesels instead. The Army placed an order with EMD for 41 SW8s (road numbers 2000-2040) to go to Korea in place of the S160A. So 610 was the only S160A ever built.

A late friend of mine, Derek Foster, bought and imported 5197, overhauled it and ran it, with his Jinty and BR Class 4 2-6-0, on tge Llangollen Railway. This he did until his 70th birthday when he was told he would not be able to drive any more. He sold his 3 locos and bought 10 cranes and ran them up in Cumbria, at Thelkeld, until a few months before his death last year. Derek was a cracking bloke (he once owned a haulage company) and loved steam. I think he said he bought his loco from China? He saw it shunting and told thd person who was translating for him that he loved them and would live to buy one. He was then told "Well that one is for sale". He immediately arranged to buy it and she was shipped over a few months later. I'd guarantee he would have had one of yours too!!!

Outstanding and thank you Rapido. Another Four Star effort. FYI, the United States played a major role in rebuilding the European rail system, in particular the Alco, Baldwin, Montreal, and Lima locomotive works 141 class 2-8-2 for the French National Railway System or SNCF. Rivarossi did an excellent job with their S-100 0-6-0 locomotive and I'm sure that Rapido's effort will eclipse anything on the market today. Keep up the good work and again, thank you!

A great release, and as others say if it's Rapido it'll be amazing. What's also amazing is you have footage of the train ferry lifting gantry in use (6:55). The Germans destroyed the special boat docks for rail traffic on the Channel coast, so the gantry cranes acted as a floating linkspan to lift the trains on to French metals. The cranes were removed by 1947.

Yes we were very fortunate that the Imperial War Museums digitally scanned footage of the unloading procedure at Cherbourg in 1944 for us. We believe this film footage has not been previously shown publicly, which makes it rather special.

I'm wondering if anyone will try non-British liveries, the S160 was a workhorse on mainland European, Asian, and North African/Middle Eastern railways for some time after the war, heck a few postwar builds were even exported to South America or kept stateside. I don't think there's another locomotive that has sported as many liveries as the S160.
