I’m a process operator at an oil refinery and I just want to say you do NOT need a degree to get a job. I never even knew what a process operator was until I heard about the aptitude test they were giving and went to test. I passed test, killed the interview and got hired. Many of the operators I know don’t have any type of degree related to the field. I know I got lucky because there were many applicants but I just don’t want people to think that it’s mandatory to have the degree and not even try. Good luck to all.

Don't do it stay in school....chemical operator jobs suck....I do it and hate it.!!! Let's just say that specialty chemical operator jobs suck. Maybe if your working in a refinery like this video depicts its probably not bad at all. But working with reactors where you have to charge raw material to them sometimes hundreds of 50 pound bags and then vacuum charge liquid out of drums during the summer months really sucks. Working in a refinery though where it's a continuous process, and you make your rounds and take readings, maybe pull a sample....that's not bad at all.

+NaeNAe I was in the military as well. Both full time in intelligence and electrical for 7 years (Army Active) and some reserve time as a crew chief in the Air Force (as a full time student majoring in electrical engineering). As for all the things that you do in the military, I understand that it is or can be amazing. Sadly, most of the people that never served think that most of us are just glorified high school graduates or crazy killers. I would tell you to work on getting a degree. Start out with a technical college in something electrical, mechanical, mechatronics or something for the operators course mentioned in this video. Most of the paperwork that you get in the military is worth nothing on the civilian side. That is a myth and a lie. The only thing that you will get credit for is your clearance, if your job needs it (and most don't), and your veterans status. No one will care about you being airborne, ranger, pathfinder etc..., just an honorable discharge. Remember this, most people on the outside will not look out for you like a veteran or your battle buddies. If you have the chance, start college now but please make sure that the college is accredited. Stay away from ITT, ECPI, ...type nonsense. Save all the money that you can and go online or to a bookstore and order an algebra and trigonometry book because you will need to do some math-which is not the type of math that you are doing as a jarhead (joke), but true right? If you have the Chapter 33, you can go to college and have the books and class cost covered, but understand that if you are not in class (class being out), your living allowance will not be covered (you will not get paid) and that is where your saved money will come in. The money that you make from the Chapter 33 will not be enough to completely live on by yourself. Please, save money now and work on your math and buy yourself a Texas Instruments TI 84, or TI 89 now to understand the operations because you will usually need it for the classes if not the workplace. Not the TI 92 plus nor TI 200 because of the keyboard, it will not be allowed on the testing. Start saving your money and use your free time to work on electrical formulas that go beyond what you did in AIT (Advanced Individual Training). Again, most of the training and experience that you got in the military can help you as a future technician or engineer but colleges will not usually give you credit for your military schools. It just one more slap in the face from the so called "thank you for your service America", that that's another issue.
