USB-C to DC barrel 12 Volt adapter tested.

The description on this product was vague and I wanted to know if this adapter did any step up or step down to reach that 12 volts. They also claim its for 60 to 100 watts like charging your laptop, well lets fins out.
This was brought to my attention by someone who wanted to use this to power the InvisaGig Cellular Gateway, so I also wanted to test that.

Would you be able to test a "19V" barrel adapter and see if it steps down from 20V to make it 19V, or if it's actual 20V as stated in the PD spec?

Just because the upstream devices do not yet exist, does not reflect on the plug adapter, they are just stating the max wattage their device can handle.

No way DC conversion happens so small! It is a plug adapter and a PD trigger, requesting 12V, accepting higher would be unsafe.

Would like to give this a try to power up my gaming laptop to keep it charged with a powerbank. Need Output Voltage 19.5V Output Current 9.23A Power 180W Don't think I can do that with a powerbank with a barrel jack !!!!

with my gaming laptop that has a 180w charger, you can charge it with a 65w charger as long as its turned off. if you turn the laptop on the underpowered charger will freak out and repeatedly cut the power to the laptop

But was the voltage drop caused by your "cheap" cable?

Probably not since that cable is rated for 100 watts and has charged the battery I am using at 100 watts (20 volts at 5 amps).

I never tried it in revers, but I would probably say it wouldn’t work. Or I would hope it doesn’t work since based on how the chip they use.

Well that’s because most older laptop use 12V and although they claim it works for 12V I can easily prove in my testing that it doesn’t step up the voltage. So it might work, it might not depending on the laptop. If it does charge at a lower voltage it will defiantly be charging slower. Well that and I dont have any older laptops to show it on since I tear down and recycle all the older ones that can not be repaired or repurposed for donation.
