Hi Jonathon, Just did this today after doing your Ram Mount mod yesterday. Thanks for doing the video. Just one thing though, I did not need to take the whole fairing off. I only needed to take the first top section off with the 2 screws and pop rivets. I was easily able to connect the cable this way with my fairly large hands. Thanks again.

Thanks for doing this video, it helped me a lot. I did mine today, however I managed to do all of this without removing the whole side fairing. I only needed to remove the top part of the side fairing and release the plastic piece to gain access to the back of the USB drive. I was then able to reach in from the top and from underneath to connect to the terminals. I felt relieved as I wasn't overly confident removing the whole side. Also, for anyone else looking at this video to do the job yourself, I needed the smallest 'bullet plugs'. I found out these come in different sizes and my first attempt failed, due to sourcing a bullet connector which was a bit too large.

I have already done this on my 2012 sx and it did not have the socket for the plug. I then cut a hole in the dash, i put a cig lighter in as well for a air pump for a flat tyre, and also added a inline fuse. So i can have 4 usb's if i want to This i attached to the heated grips not really needed where i live in Aus Then i covered all the connections with hot glue to stop movement and to keep out water. I would have liked to have the volts shown. Flat battery the other day showed 12.5 volts but had no amps at all not even a spark from shorting! Q. I would love to see a graph on how much amps are produced and how many accessories you can add before you use more than you produce. Still good vid mate.

I am able to find the accessory plugs in the wiring diagram for my bike, but I learned about them from reading various forums. Checking a few forums for your bike would be the first place I'd look to see if there are any aux ports. If this bike didn't have aux connections built in, I'd wire my own from the battery.

What size bullet connectors did you use? Also what type of connectors did you use for the outlet? Your addition of the usb outlet under the fairing has inspired me to do the same. Awesome job!
@JonLong6 жыл бұрын
Hey there! The bullet connectors are a standard size. You can order them online or just go to your local auto parts or hardware store (I got mine at Home Depot). Although the bullet connector parts are a standard size, they do come in three varieties depending on the wire gauge that you are using. The color code is also standardized. Yellow is for larger gauge wire, blue is medium, and then red is small gauge. I used blue terminals with 16 gauge wire. The connectors for the outlet were included with the outlet. They are the female end of a spade connector, but you do not need to buy them separately. Let me know how it goes!

Very clear, well produced informative video. QUESTION: Other presenters include the use of a RELAY - why doesn't your setup "require" a relay, and why is your setup apparently not using a fuse? Many thanks & stay safe!
@JonLong4 жыл бұрын
You might use a relay if you have a switched circuit that can't safely handle the power draw of whatever accessory you are installing. There are other reasons to use a relay, but that's the common one for aftermarket electrical accessories. The reason it's not necessary for my installation is that I'm using the factory connections on the bike. There are two sets of connectors, one is to power heated grips and the other (which I used in this video) is meant to power a 12v accessory outlet. Even though I'm not using the OEM accessory outlet, the power demands are the same. I also do not need to install a separate fuse because the bike already has a fuse on that circuit in the fuse box. This is basically a factory installation, but with an aftermarket part. Hopefully that makes sense, but let me know if anything is unclear.

How does the Battery Tender USB charger differ from you plugging in your USB cable to the Dual USB Socket you installed?
@JonLong4 жыл бұрын
Functionally, there is no difference. But the Battery Tender allows me to always have a phone charger cable installed and ready to use, without being very visible. If I was just using the dual usb socket, then the charger cable is more visible and I would have to unplug it in the event of rain. NOT directly to the battery or you'll be draining the battery as the bike sits/stands not running. Connect the USB or 12v outlet to the available wires coming from the ignition. That way, only when the ignition is "on", will the USB charger/voltmeter or 12v outlet be running.

I am sure that I used the right connections for the USB. Both connections (usb and heated grip) have the same plugs and the same voltage. So either of them will work for USB. Hi Danny! You shouldn’t need to change the relay for this mod. But remember that there are different limits for the accessory power connection, and the heated grip power connection. Annoyingly the 2020 ninja has dropped the bullet plugs in favour of some proprietary plastic plug. There's not a massive amount of slack on the cable either, so attaching a new connector was quite fiddly. I ended up taking the dash out of the bike which requires taking off the screen and a part of the nose to get better access. The screen is part of the dash on the 2020 so I disconnected the battery and then unplugged the screen. Also the connector for the dash port is a little more tucked away than on the old ninja - I didn't find it initially. As per the old ninja the one near the heat sink, further back is for the heated grips. They're not hanging loose either - they're placed in blank female connectors taped to the loom.
@podopple4 жыл бұрын
Thx for sharing I'm planning to do this soon on my 2020. Is it a SAE connector?
@doc9994 жыл бұрын
No it's not. I asked one of the Kawasaki dealers and he wasn't sure what type of plug it was, and apparently Kawasaki don't sell individual plugs for their looms. I ended up buying an automotive 2 way plug from an electronics store and cutting the old plug off. You can get an idea of the existing plug here: kawasaki.com.au/shop/accessories/motorcycle/sport-super-sport-accessories/power-outlet-12v-2/

@JonLong6 жыл бұрын
You could also install a smaller button into the knockout panel that fills the hole. You may have to work around the bracket that secures it, or find a different way to mount the panel inside the hole. Another option would be to hide the button underneath the flat part of the fairing (just in front of the hole). You'd be able to reach down and hit the button, but it would be hidden to others.

The genuine power socket from Kawasaki is the biggest scam ever, the actual socket is the same as the one in the kit for the Vulcan S. I was researching it last year, and found the Kawasaki fitting instructions online (for the 2017 SX) which lists the individual part references. I googled the part number and it came up with instructions for a Vulcan S power socket with exactly the same part number for the socket and cover assembly (also comes with a bracket and rear cover, but not needed on the SX), the cost when I bought it last year was £27 (now £39.95) from Kawasaki UK. So if you want the exact same part, from Kawasaki themselves look for part number 999940541. Fits straight into the hole, then has the bullet connectors to connect onto the bikes wiring harness.

The Kawasaki dealer I'm currently talking to is telling me that if I make any mods to this bike without it being done in the Kawasaki shop will void the warranty. Anyone else know anything about this?
@JonLong6 жыл бұрын
That’s absolutely false, and such a policy would be in violation of federal law. The only time that doing your own work can void the warranty is if your work or the parts you used damaged the bike or some other component of the bike. And even then, the entire warranty is not void, only the warranty for the parts you damaged. For example, if you installed the incorrect spark plugs, and then the wheel cracked because of a defect, your warranty for the wheel is unaffected. If the engine suffers damage because you used the incorrect spark plugs, then Kawasaki would not be responsible to fix damage that you caused. What your dealer is telling you is a common lie.

Attached the leads, properly, to the charger and to the two wires (supposedly coming from the ignition switch). Turned on the 2018 Kawasaki Ninja 400 KRT ABS ignition - but the USB charger, which has a voltmeter, did not work. Attached two other voltmeters directly to the Ninja's two wires, and again, there was no voltage present. I'm going to try to locate the fuse box and check the fuse, but I can't imagine that the fuse could be blown when those wires were never connected to anything. Your thoughts??????? BTW - purchased a box of "assorted" bullet connectors from Amazon - the only thing "assorted" about them were the five colors - my caliper measured them all to be the same size - can we all say "false advertising"? Fuse seems like the obvious first thing to check. Are you turning the key on, or starting the bike? Might not make a difference, but it’s worth trying. Also, usually the colors of the bullet connectors signify the wire gauge that they are meant to accommodate, not the dimensions of the connector itself.

@@JonLong Bullet connectors were crimped tightly (and pull-tested), not on the wire insulators, but the bared and twisted wires themselves. (Electronics was my hobby as a kid - went eventually to RCA Institutes, worked in electronics in the Air Force, worked for Philips Norelco, and I'm a FCC licensed amateur radio operator). Never came across "bullet connectors" before. Imagine that? Anyway, the fault is that there is no current through the Ninja's accessory wires, whether the bike is "on" in neutral, or the engine is running. So, I'm checking YT vids and then my manual, if necessary, for the location of and access to the fuse box. Wish me luck, and "happy 75th birthday" to me in two days. Thanks, Kawasaki Kid

UPDATE: Found the accessory fuse box (a/k/a fuse box #2) and checked the fuses, all had continuity. STILL< no current through the accessory wires. Your thoughts? Stay safe! Kawasaki Kid
