The event of a car wreck happen in less than half a second, obviously no time to react. A dangerous situation/active shooter though? Unless you're the first target, happens over the course of at least several seconds for you to react. And if you are the initial target, you're either too injured to respond anyways with your chambered round, or they've missed and you have time to react by default. Encouraging people to carry a weapon at all times in a condition higher than most troops forward deployed is outrageous and exactly why guns are seen as so dangerous. Absolutely ridiculous analogy.

All the guys would show up for firearms training and would train and qualify with no jacket. For decades I was the only one who always wore a cover garment. Getting the garment out of the way so you can draw is another level of complexity and you should train this way. (Train the way you would fight). Then I saw an exact replica P365 blow-back pellet gun on sale, and thought, hey that will be cool to practice with... and bought it. So now I was able not only practice draw/rack and dry fire, but actually draw, rack, and literally fire at a target - this felt like a whole different animal to just dry-firing, and made me realize just how inefficient carrying unchambered was. If you could not get the extra round in the magazine, the chamber was empty and the firearm or magazine was defective, and therefore, not to be used. It also meant that with a 15 round magazine, we actually had 16 rounds available straight up. Always had a spare 15 round magazine as well.

I've never had a problem with racking my slide within one second of pulling my weapon from the holster with only my trigger hand. Everyone is different but as for me I feel if by chance an assailant gets my gun from my holster and he or she tries to fire the weapon it will not work because there wasn't a round in the chamber, giving me a little time to defend my self and recover my weapon. I'm sure I'll get some flack about this but it's my choice. I've done a lot of self defense training over the year's and found that not having it loaded and ready to fire will give more time to react and defend while the assailant is confused and trying to load the weapon.

What many don't understand is a lot of things can go wrong if you must rack before you shoot. Bullet can get stuck, chamber won't completely close, finger can be pinched, or that first round ends up being a dud and you have to re-rack. If you already have one in the chamber, your bullet is already in place, chamber is already closed, your finger won't get pinched with that first round. Great advice! I gotta admit my gun isn't my first option for self defense though. One reason I don't like one chambered is because its my last resort anyway. If I'm being attacked close enough they got their hands on me, I'm definately putting may hands on them and a gun would only get in my way or potentially kill someone unnecessarily. In a physical struggle a shot could fly anywhere and hit bystanders even. It's happened. I am very capable of defending myself with no firearm at all in most scenarios that close. It can be done either appendix or middle of my back. I'm a thin guy so it's kinda hard to conceal without leaving an imprint in my clothing. If the firearm is in a holster, on your person, then absolutely carry with a round in the chamber. As a lover of the 1911, (I might be showing my age) I hear a lot of people say this pistol was designed to be carried in Condition 1. If you read the original service manual it clearly states unless you are heading directly into combat to keep the chamber empty and hammer down.( Condition 1,2,3 was not a thing at this time) So I just got in the habit, I drill on draw and rack, and I know this is a disadvantage for me, but stupid is as stupid does. If you’re heading out into the world with your 1911 as your defensive carry weapon then you should be carrying it with a round in the chamber and the hammer back safety on. Because that is the way the gun is designed to be carried when it needs to be used at a moments notice(combat). If you are carrying it for defensive purposes it needs to be ready to be used at a moment‘s notice. You also need to remember that service manual was written with a different use of the weapon in mind. Military use not civilian defensive carry. Just food for thought. I agree with your frustration but we old timers need to recognize that every day newbies join our mix and they have all the issues that we had 35 or whatever years ago. We need to stuff our frustrations (however reasonable) back down and make sure they get the good dope. Just assume that every few years this will be a thing along with shooting someone in the leg, warning shots and the “fact” that a shotgun doesn’t need aiming... I’d also say that if carrying with a round in the chamber is preventing someone from carrying period then they can take a few weeks or two months of carrying with a loaded magazine and an empty chamber to get comfortable with carrying a gun. During this time do three things. Take a good self defense with a pistol class. Do some extensive dry firing of drawing, chambering a round and firing vs drying and firing mimicking a loaded gun. Time the difference. Watch as many ASP episodes on KZbin as you can. After meeting these three or so criteria and the time has passed they should move to carrying with a loaded chamber. If they can’t do that then maybe take another week or two so but if after all that they are still uncomfortable with a loaded chamber maybe carrying a gun isn’t for them. There is no shame in this. Real world self defense encounters are not like we have been conditioned by the “media” movies, TV shows etc., and time to draw and chamber very often isn’t available and/or inducing a malfunction while under stress is a real possibility. Carry with a loaded chamber is one of several requirements to actually be prepared.

If you’re too worried about accidental discharge then carry a revolver or a DASA (Beretta 92 for example). The heavy double-action trigger pull is its own safety mechanism. Whether to carry around in the chamber is a trade off; each has merits and demerits. The reason the IDF doesn't teach round in the chamber is to avoid accidental discharges amongst a large and diverse civilian army; that's why the protocol continues presently, even with uniform weapons. Round in the chamber enhances response time, but increases the risk of accidental discharge. There are numerous instances where round or no round in the chamber either saves a life or costs a life. An officer on duty is arguably in "condition yellow" where a round in chamber could be reasonable, because officers frequently enter inherently dangerous scenarios. Even IDF soldiers, on a dangerous mission, will carry a round in chamber. Lastly, it's not about accidentally dropping the firearm; it's about the accidental discharge.

For those who do not "trust the gun" enough not to go off (when you don't want it to) with a round in the chamber. I would look into a handgun that has a manual safety or at least a grip safety. Better to flip a switch in a fraction of a second instead of racking the slide. Just have to train that muscle memory. I understand why people may not like Glocks (or other guns without a manual safety) Because if something somehow was able to engage that trigger the gun would still fire when they didn't want it to. That doesn't mean they are not great firearms. Find a handgun platform that works for you. But always carry with a round in the chamber. If you are not ready or comfortable to use your firearm when needed then I don't think that you should be carrying to begin with. That last part is my personal opinion.

With or without a safety. A safety has it's place like any other control on the firearm. Depends on the application and use of that firearm for that situation. An unintended manipulation of that trigger CAN occur. Not all the time and at no fault of the person that carries the gun but it does happen. Soft holsters or pocket pistols are an example. Not always perfect to protect that trigger. In that application a safety is useful to lessen the chance of an unintentional discharge. Or ask the cops that have had people grab their guns in their holster and discharged their weapon while still holstered, shooting the cop in the leg or foot. It happens. Not all the time but that single mechanical control could have stopped that from happening. As always guys. I can see both sides of it. Hundreds of Americans die every year from negligent discharges (not including non-fatal injuries and lives put in risk by firearms mishandling), and in 100% of those cases there was a round in the chamber. It is not something to take lightly. There's also a very small window of difference in the time it takes to draw and rack as opposed to simply drawing, especially if your supporting hand is already there lifting your covering garment, and in either case you're going to have plenty of time if you're not in immediate danger and nowhere near enough time if someone's already got you at gunpoint or knifepoint. So the speed argument just doesn't fly for me. The deciding difference for me is that if you're already being attacked YOU MAY NOT HAVE THE CAPABILITY TO CHAMBER A ROUND AT ALL. Your other arm and hand may simply not be available to perform this action. Maybe you're using it to hold back your attacker, or maybe it's been injured by your attacker. If so, you will not be able to rack the slide on a semi-automatic pistol and chamber a round (at least not without great difficulty which almost certainly won't be feasible if you're already being attacked). But with a round in the chamber, you only need one arm and hand for raising the covering garment, drawing your weapon, and releasing any safety before firing, and you can do that with either hand if your holster is well-positioned. So yes, you really should carry with a round in the chamber. But it's much more critical that you have training, discipline, situational awareness, and the correct equipment. If you don't have that, you should not be carrying with a round in the chamber, or even carrying at all.

I have a 13-round Hellcat sub-compact which has no external safety. The only safety is in the trigger mechanism like a Glock has. With one round chambered and 13 in the magazine, not thinking about disengaging the safety is just one less thing to think about. Just pull, aim and shoot in one, quick sweeping motion. So simple. I can see where racking the slide to chamber the first round and then sweeping the safety off causes you to lose critical time. So if you’re gonna carry a loaded sidearm, have it ready to shoot with only a trigger pull necessary once you’ve acquired your threatening target.

I just recently decided to carry with a round in the chamber. One thing that helped ease my mind was to do a very extensive mechanical analysis of the gun. I spent two days taking it apart and analyzing every little part and every little movement and knowing every safety feature. I made several videos on the Taurus G2C where I did this. Even discovered a hack to the gun where I can get double action on the first chambered shot rather than single action which makes it even safer to carry chambered. I will say this though...if you carry chambered you absolutely must have a holster that completly covers the trigger and you must establish rock solid trigger finger discipline where you NEVER NEVER have your finger on the trigger while drawing your weapon. One more thing: Make sure your firing pin block on the G2C works properly and not stuck in the depressed position. If it sticks in the depressed position then you won't have the firing pin blocked in case the gun is dropped and jarred lose from the sear. This is where a clean and well lubricated gun adds to safety. A dry and dirty carboned up gun can result in stuck parts and stuck parts can result in the chambered gun going off when dropped. Watch my videos. Below is a link to a video I did on the firing pin block. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rYOYoWuEZqpmf9U

The G2C has double strike ability to begin with You didnt " discover" a hack. Just how theyre designed. Did you even READ the instruction manual.
@normtheteacher54852 жыл бұрын
@@tristantimothy1004 Yes, I did read the manual cover to cover several times. Yes, I did discover a hack where one can have a double action shot on the first shot. This was not factory intended. This hack allows one to carry chambered without the gun being cocked. In other words without the firing pin being pulled back and hooked over the sear which is much safer than it being hooked over the sear. There is a slight increase in danger though, when reassembling the gun which is why I have not informed the public of what this hack is. If one practices good safety measures while reassembling then there would be no problem. Im afraid some people wouldn't and thus get hurt. By factory standards when you chamber a round you have just also cocked the gun. The G2C does not have a decocker. My hack allows one to carry the gun uncocked so that even if the firing pin block fails and the gun is dropped, the gun won't go off unless some very unlikely event happens where the trigger snags on something when it is dropped. That's a danger with any chambered gun. That is what the external safety is for. When firing your first shot with this hack you are firing in restrike mode except it is not a restrike, instead it is the rounds first strike. This was not factory intended and thus is a hack. It does not involve modifying the gun in any way. Just take your gun apart and completly analyze things and you will figure out how to do this hack. I wish I could explain it to you but I'm afraid you might get hurt. When you figure it out just use extreme caution reassembling the gun. You refered to the restrike feature as double strike feature. You can restrike as many times as you wish, not just two. Thanks for your reply.

Kevin says you must use one hand to clear your cover while you use the other to draw. Then he says you will need your second hand to chamber a round whereas if you were carrying with one in the chamber you have a free hand to defend yourself. But he just told me I needed that other hand to clear my cover garment. Why is the time needed to clear the garment not counted? Bringing that hand down to clear my cover is valuable time if the altercation is happening as quickly as he sets the scenario. If my second hand is down there clearing my cover and I train for a gross motor action like the Israeli Method, what is the actual time difference? Or if my gun is not hot and I draw it close quarters, is it still not a dangerous weapon to jam in someone's face to disrupt them to give me time to get chambered? When the fight is happening that quickly, why is he not concerned about needing two hands to draw? He says the average gun fight takes 3 seconds. That's a stat I'd really like to see more about how it was measured (and so now we trust the FBI?). My guess is that it is based on recollection. One can hardly sit around with timers waiting for gun fights. Though maybe in Chicago you could. I am very skeptical of "statistics" taken after the fact while recreating a scene, particularly contrasted to a very controllable measuring of difference in time between clearing cover on a hot weapon vs. the Israeli Method (which he debunks tangentially, describing how it was not about safety but he fails to prove it was ineffective, there's a big difference there). Bottom line, I appreciate the views he offers in this video and I fully expect as a police officer you without question carry with one in the chamber. But his attitude is churlish. He uses a childish demeaning voice the few times he presents a counterpoint. He does not discuss trade-off on negligent discharges or injury/death statistics. He treats all scenarios as equally likely. If you are a retiree running errands around town and playing golf vs. you work a night shift in a bad part of town and hang around hard-drinking 20yo guys, the same prescription applies. That unfortunately makes me more skeptical of his advice because he presents his position as the only rational choice.

Food for thought - My Glock does not have a "old school" safety. The safety is built into the trigger. My concern with having one in the chamber has to do with the action of placing my protection tool into my holster. If my Glock were chambered, and I caught the edge of my shirt, a bottom string of my jacket (or whatever), within the trigger guard while inserting the protection tool into the holster, it is NOT a big leap of imagination that one could inadvertently create a trigger pull and cause a accidental discharge.

The aggressor may have control of your off-hand / arm, OR you may be rolling around in a ground fight with the aggressor(s) on top of you. You may be fighting for your life and if all you can do is draw and shoot, wouldn't it be much easier if the gun was fully ready to fire? Lastly, all serious law enforcement agencies conduct training which involves drawing, shooting, reloading, etc all with your OFF-HAND...
