The main difference is that regular pyrotechnic flares can be seen from a way further distance than any beam of light.

I FISH INSHORE...and still carry shotgun shell flares. BUT, this is WAY SAFER than those flares.

This is a nice tool, we’ve had another brand for a few years now. Check the date on your batteries. Per USCG, Expired batteries are the same ticket as expired flares. Per USCG, you have to have the unit “in working order", meaning the batteries need to be installed, or it’s the same ticket as not having flares. Rayovac and Duracell batteries hold up best to the marine environment and corrosion. Mine is in a bracket next to the epirb.

c-cell batteries have a date?? New one on me. just check and change, thats EZ. Or buy 10 yr long life batteries. I have them (and they work!) on my PFD lights.

Thats a cool light. Gonna have to get one. At least it wont expire like flairs and smokes. Cause you know you not getting checked when they are not expired. Oh and those flares are nasty. We light our old ones ofc every fourth of July. I will say we had ones that were 15 yrs old and lit on the first strike
