USCG Helicopter Rescue Swimmer AST "A" School class (133-19)

After 24 weeks of training the class of 133-19 Graduated with 11 students on September 27th 2019.
Aviation Survival Technicians (AST)/Helicopter Rescue Swimmers, as they are more technically called by the U.S. Coast Guard, are called upon in extreme rescue situations.
It is little surprise that they must represent the best swimmers the U.S. Military has to offer as they deal with high seas and other challenging environments. Coast Guard Rescue Swimmers have been called upon in emergency situations such as natural disasters involving heavy flooding or hurricanes in the past.
The team is currently composed of approximately 350 active-duty members. The opportunity to join the elite force is remarkably selective, as only 998 individuals have achieved high enough scores in training to become ASTs since the 1980s.

I saw a rescue swimmer jump out of a helicopter into tropical storm seas and swim 40 yards to a life raft and back to the helicopter through the rotor wash and waves 12 times saving people out of the raft and clinging to the side of it. They are a different type of human.

If it was tropical storm seas then he didn't "jump" he was lowered by the hoist. "Jumping" is a free fall deployment restricted to a max height of 15 ft in fairly calm seas. We never endanger our swimmers carelessly.

Red Cross Lifeguard training in the early 90s was harder than this. We had to do all of this in the pool without fins, mask, or snorkel.
@Ubions

@@davidb8373 so you’ve gone through AST “A” school? Do you realize this program has one of the highest attrition rates in all the US military. Not to say Red Cross Lifeguard training in the early 90s wasn’t challenging, but I highly doubt it is anywhere near the difficulty of AST “A” school. Edit: also too, we only see what the camera shows us, you don’t see the 6 months of training these Coasties go through.

@@davidb8373 yeah that’s horseshit the lifeguard course has requirements of a 300 yard swim any stroke, a 20 yard tow, and 2 minutes treading water the AST schools minimum requirements to be selected are a 500 yard swim in less than 12 minutes, a 200 yard buddy tow, a 25 metre underwater swim, 50 shoulder width push-ups, 60 sit-ups, 5 pull ups, and 5 chin-ups, not to mention there nationally registered EMTs

I was in the CG from 75-79, all my years at CGAS Kodiak. The AST position wasn't created till the early 80's. Back in my time all helo crewmembers were "qualified" to do this job. We were so very inadequate compared to these new swimmers. This is the best thing that the CG has done in many years. #SemperParatus

When you've just jumped out of a sailboat that is on fire and sinking, and you only have a wusy little life vest cause your raft melted before you knew what was happening, nothing looks better than a brightly colored helo with some buff dude that can swim like Johnny Weissmuller getting ready to jump out of it to save your hurting butts...
