Roll the boat, fail the course. Video never does "The Bar" justice. I grew up in Portland, and I've crossed that bar hundreds of times. Thank you USCG! Number one period!

Wow, after 30+ yrs I still recognized CWO Jennings voice... I was an ex-boat crew (Bodega Bay)/ Public Affairs weenie that got to spend a week at the NMLS. Shot some the whooptydoo b-roll and most of the oscar sequence. The 44300 had been rolled x9, pitchpoled x3, and got smacked by a freighter and was still chuggin'. Ah, the Depot Tavern :) PS - it was a film crew from Raytheon that shot most of this show. When asked by NG to go back and fill in some gaps, they said NFW. That's when they called us!

They showed this video while I was at MLB school back in 89' - They were testing the new 47ft boat and rolled a 44 while out in training. Fun times for sure!

I ran 44343 at Ft. Macon. Raytheon (radars)had a poster showing a 44 busting through a wave, with the caption, "When the going gets tough, the tough get going". I've been trying to find one for 35 years now

Great footage! Long time no see ha! Is it possible for me to use and share this footage on my youtube page? I share footage from all kind of activities on our ocean. Cargo ships in the 1960s till now, oil rigs, fishing vessels, etc. Of course full credit will be given to the owner of the footage. Looking forward to your reply. Kind regards. Cheers.

oh no way baby ! I went deep sea fishing once in my life, and that would never happen again . I prayed for death ( i am a wimp )I would have paid that captain anything to turn that boat around.Instead ,he tied a little rubber gorilla from a fishing line and dangled it in my face. He laughter as i swat this thing from my face while my eyes remained closed.God bless you for doing what you do! You must have a cast iron stomach.Doesn't anyone get sea sick?

When your on boats like you see here, the 44' MLB, your mind is so concentrated on what your doing that you just don't have time to be sea sick, I know that sounds funny but it's true. And don't feel bad for being sick, I've seen sailors get sea sick when the #4 line left the dock.

Recall being seasick on a "white one " , after rounding Cape Elizabeth I didn't eat or drink anything for five days , you feel like " if you're not dead you wish you were dead ". Was a young sailor on Ocean Station Charlie off Greenland [ Dec/Jan '65, '66 ] on the 311 foot cutter Coos Bay fighting thirty foot waves for days - Winter North Atlantic Ocean Station duty off Labrador [ OS Bravo ] or Greenland [ OS Charlie ] can be worse than "crossing the bar " at the mouth of the Columbia River on a 44 footer . US Coast Guard Ocean Station sailors stayed on station for 21 days plus a week getting there and back , Coos Bay tied up at Maine State Pier in Portland .
