Lee Simmons owns and operates Big Rock Dairy on 350 acres of prime farmland in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley. His enterprise includes beef and dairy cows, a growing poultry operation and corn and alfalfa crops grown for feed. With financial and technical assistance from the Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP), Simmons has over seeded clover in his pastures and implemented reduced tillage, multi-species cover crops and nutrient management for the different types of wastes on the farm.
This is the latest installment of the Virginia CSP Champions series, which profiles producers across Virginia and details their participation in the Conservation Stewardship Program with USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service.
About Virginia NRCS: NRCS helps farmers, ranchers and forest landowners conserve Virginia’s soil, water, air and other natural resources. All programs are voluntary and offer science-based solutions that benefit both the landowner and the environment.
