Hi Mark. What I do on my tool setup for boring bars or long tools is to install the tool but don’t tighten. Eyeball the overhang to “not crash into the X axis housing.”Then I index the turret to place my long tool the back of the turret housing. I reach up and slide the tool until it touches and then back it off approx .250”. Then tighten the tool in holder.

I rotate the empty tool station into the position where the tightest fitment is and then use a scale to check from tool holder edge to the wall. Very handy for the old school Mori slant lathes when setting cutoff tools. Thanks for this tip.

I said it in another video and I’ll say it again. The offsets page needs a “new data” and “previous data” line like my mori’s have so when you accidentally set offset 1 instead of 51, you can easily see the old value. Also would be great for tracking changes after touching off the tools to see if something is going wrong with the machine. I’m tired of taking pictures of my offset page with my phone.

you need to make a lathe with real interpolable C-Axis on the Sub-Spindle, not only an indexable one with +-0.5 degrees of tolerance. I have a DS30Y and for this issue I have to machine the more complex pieces on another lathe

here's how I check it: unlock the turret and jog by hand around. we also find the max stickout for our x axis live tools and we just make sure they are less than that

Have you had any customers ask about the idea of having the Turret Position column in offsets become an actual / usable field? Example, using your video for discussion: It would be nice to program T101 for the front facing CNMG 432, and then T5151 to define the back facing CNMG, which is located in station 1. I've had this question multiple times at the HFO level, but was curious if this has been passed along at the factory level as well. Always great to see your new videos, Mark.

When I first used a DS-30 I was so confused on how the Sub Spindle work as I had been running Mazak, Doosan, and Mori lathes with sub spindles. When you had to program on the sub spindle in the Negative direction I was 100% against that. After 2 days of testing and post editing, I found the best way to program this by using a G14 then a G101 Z0 you mirror the Z axis so it can be programmed the same as Every Other lathe in the last 30 years. The best way to set a tool change position is to cancel the tool offset and use a G59 to set your position. It's cleaner and you can move the position without program edits.. Using G55 for your B axis is safer as well, once again, no program edits. I wish Haas would set their Lathe controllers to work like the rest of the industry, and only use G14 as a Simplified method of programming. Not the only method.

Good to see you again Mark! Thanks for the video. My boss is contemplating purchasing a live tool Haas lathe and this video is a good head start for me. Can't wait for Haas to make 5 axis lathes in the future! Best regards.

@Mark Terryberry I have a Haas ST25Y with the sub-spindle. I am still having a bit of an issue understanding the work offset setup for the sub-spindle. When setting up the sub-spindle work offset I currently move the sub-spindle into the location I want, skim the faces and use the Z-face measure for setting the work offsets and then set my tool offset using the same method. Setting the tools after the work offset has been completed. So I guess my biggest question is if I change my work offset or use a new work offset do I need to retouch all of the tools in the backside of the turret? Thanks for all of the amazing youtube content it has been a great tool.

We made a video on how to manual set our Tool and Work Offsets on a lathe, and while this video was made for Main Spindle lathes, the concept is the same. Check out the video, and it should answer your question: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJWVpmWDfJugm7s . We want to set all of our Z Tool Offsets, by jogging to that cleaned-up face and pressing Z-Face Measure. If we want to change our Z Work Offset, after we've set all of our Z Tool Offsets, we can jog any of the touched-off tools to our new Z Face, highlight our new Work Offset (like G55, G56..), and press the Z Face Measure button. This will add a value to our Z Work Offset, which will be the distance where our new face is, compared to where all of our tools were set. With this new value in our Work Offset, all of our tools can now be used with our our new Work Offset (Like G55..). We don't have to set all of our tools again, we just need to reset our Work Offset Z values, with any tool that has already been set.

I run a DS30Y and I just know that from the face of my post holders to the contact point of the back of the turret is about 4" so I always make sure any back tools are at 3.75" or less. Also I always touch off my back tools with the probe, you just have to take the main spindle jaws off and then there is plenty of clearance for even the max allowable stick out. But you lost me at the end changing the tip direction...

A separate detachable sub spindle tool pre-setter arm like other mtb’s offer would be something I would gladly pay for. Setting up tool offsets manually is such a waste of time and I loathe having to set up sub spindle tooling.

Hello Mark ! I have a Ds30Y and I’m producing in mexico with it. Your videos help much more than any haas service personal down here.thank you My question for you is, does the G14 also count for the radius compensation direction on the subspindle ?programing G41 and G42 same way as if I program on the main spindle ? If I’d do an OD contour front to back at the sub I’m running in dirección of feed at the left of the part which in theory is a G41 ….is G14 taking care of this too? Another subspindle issue I have is that it’s very imprecise, when I do a G199 like I learned from the G199 video with an R0. Value , the part is always off by 0.5-1degree, sometimes plus sometimes minus , is there any command as an G9 for indexing the sub? Or any other method which is more accurate ? Seems like the subs indexing exact window is way too high but maybe just can’t get better… Thanks for reading hope for your answer !

Light bulb Mark, tool stick out... what about a sheet metal tab bolted(perhaps) on turret? Indication/safety tab for easy visual confirmation. Top of turret but low enough to rotate and check before hitting turret body or base, (before catastrophe). Like 1 or 2 positions above lock in. Place tool in, rotate CCW 1-2 positions, pull out to tab, clearance established. I will probably get to work on one for myself. Screw patents and copyrights, "Clarance" is a machinist's best friend! Clarance for all!

To me the tool change is not a problem. The tool changer is not that strong. But doing sketchy things I have hit the door and the ceiling with the axis. That leaves a dent.

Recently got a DS30Y and was disappointed that you can’t program any type of milling in VPS. I think you should be able to program radial and axial milling through VPS, wouldn’t be complicated. Other than that, love the machine

@@jasonruch3529 There are so many axes to remember if we are going back and forth between machines all day! XYZ on mill, but on a live-tool lathe the X is up/down for diameter, but all the values are in Diameter, so we have to double all our X values. And we still have a Y-Axis on many of our lathes, but Y+ is towards the operator (its away from us on Mills). There is a reason for all of it, but it keeps us on our toes. Good comments.

I have a ST25y with the sub. When I try to use the G14 it won't take the command. In MDI mode I use g14; s500 m3; Cycle starts. G15 stays locked in and it starts the main spindle. Any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated.
@markterryberry44772 жыл бұрын
Go ahead and run that same code in MDI, while in SINGLE BLOCK mode. The MDI program might be returning to defaults (G15) at the end of the program, and stopping the spindle when the end of the program is reached and the control switches back to G15 from G14. If you continue to have issues, shoot us an email to TOD@HaasCNC.com, with your machine serial number and we will check it out.

Cardboard idea isn't bad, but you need to be more professional. I have ran into these clearance restrictions in almost every axis. My idiot-proof solution is probe the tool when it's installed in the cut position. I set the probe so that if you can probe it, then you have clearance. The x-axis safety was physically created by positioning the probe high enough so that when indexing it won't rip all my sheet metal off. For Z it's a parameter setting maxing out the distance. Remember, tool geometry for Z "0" is the centerline of a live tool. EASY, right?
