Our methods are nearly exactly the same. As someone who's videos are now almost entirely clips, I'm more and more mindful of being careful. Only got 10 claims across my 91 videos and nothing recently. The most frustrating one is a 10 second clip of Monty Python in an 8 minute video. Ridiculous

I just watched a bit of both of your videos, I like your personalities! I'd drop that super long intro and just cut straight to the content. Intros came and went a long time ago. Aside from that, make 50 videos and don't pay attention to really any analytics or anything in the process. Just get used to making videos, being on camera, and creating. After 50, look back at the data and see what worked and what didn't. Start refining things like thumbnails, edits, etc. Make 50 more. Rinse and repeat. Best of luck!

Thanks for sharing this insider info! Q1: Are there certain studios to avoid (a list of the ones you mentioned that dispute everything)? Q2: Can you talk more about copyright strikes and how/why one gets them or avoids them. And how one can dispute them or not? Q3: Any advice on playing clips of copyrighted music? What if you're commenting on the music or trying to give a short example of what the score or song sounds like?

Are MP4 downloaders illegal. I know how to use fair use, but I don't know how to download the movie clip/KZbin video without Spectrum sending a letter saying it's copyright infringement.
@TheorySmack3 күн бұрын
I don’t have spectrum, but I use YT video download tools with no issues. You could always use a screen recorder like OBS as well.
@ScofieldStudios3 күн бұрын
@@TheorySmack I have stream labs. It's just hard because I now feel like Spectrum is heavily monitoring me and if I mess up again the Wi-Fi will go out. I don't think it's because of the MP4 because I used that for years with no complaint. I downloaded an app to download movies and that's when the letter came. So, it's probably because of that but I also don't want to take a chance since screen-recording is also apparently prohibited by KZbin.

I've considered learning how to make review or "video essay" style videos about movies, especially horror films which are older, independent/"B", foreign, etc. Do you know if a lot of the copyright issues are more common with more recent or "bigger"/Hollywood films? For instance, if I were to make videos about films like the original Night of the Living Dead, The Exorcist, Jacob's Ladder or 70's Italian horror films (quite a range in film popularity there), would the videos be under less scrutiny than if I were reviewing a recent movie like The Fast and the Furious with broad market appeal? Another question; sometimes I see videos in the style I want to make where longer clips are used and wonder how they get away with this. Is this because they don't monetize or is there some other reason? Often those videos still have ads so I'm wondering if they allow the copyright owner to take the revenue and the channel is compensated by their Patreon, merch etc. or if there is another reason, like copyright owners just don't care. Red Letter Media videos come to mind. Those are really good at making content so perhaps they are "tricking" me into feeling like they are showing longer clips than they really are. Thanks.
@TheorySmack5 сағат бұрын
Older/less popular movies probably had a slightly lowered risk, but only slightly. Larger channels can get away with more in this space, for whatever reason. Not saying they can do whatever they want, but they are more likely to get copyright owners to allow their content without putting a claim/strike on their videos.

so when a video is copyright claimed, and in your case the F9 video Fair Use was rejected - do you have to take it down permanently? or is it just demonetized?

Wow man, not a very long video but extremely informative and useful!! Thank you very much. I have a question regarding images or stills used from trailers, movies etc. If you download a random image from the internet, for the use in your video, how do you know the imagine itself is not copyrighted? And what is the difference between using a screenshot from a movie and a clip? Why is an image free to use?

Great video and really good to hear from someone with lots of experience in this industry. A quick question, have you ever used footage from a film you own - won't go into details on how you've got it onto your editor of choice but say you were cutting clips together from the film, sticking to the sweet spot duration and cross cutting with clips from YT of interviews etc? Also, I hear if clips are manipulated in some why, like you've added graphics etc, this reduces the likelihood of claims, strikes? Do you know much about this? Thanks in advance!
@TheorySmackАй бұрын
When you say films you own, do you mean you are the literal owner of the copyrighted material? Or you own a DVD? And yes, editing/chopping up clips, adding in graphics/still images does reduce the likelihood of strikes.
@tellinstoriesonfilmАй бұрын
@@TheorySmack Thank you for getting back to me. I mean the latter, but not always in the format of a DVD. Let's say a film has been purchased online and you would like to include parts from the film to help drive the narrative of what you are creating. I would just like to know the risks involved and how to stay on the right side of the fair use policy.
@TheorySmackАй бұрын
@@tellinstoriesonfilm I generally just look for clips on KZbin via trailers and things. That said, if you need specific clips, you cloud play the movie on your computer and use software like OBS and screen record as the video plays. I've definitely done that a time or two. Key is - make sure you're staying in line with fair use in your content/commentary and you'll be fine.
