Actually, it's not the yellow connector at all, but a third terminal in the newer tools that slots into the new batteries. However, it doesn't appear to have any adverse effect on the functionality of the tool. I've done this "fix" on my older cordless grinder and have been using that for some pretty heavy work over the last few years, even with the higher amp hour batteries. As with anything that you are strictly not supposed to do, use this at your own risk. I had the same issue with older batteries in new tools. As the batteries look pretty much the same on the outside I didn't pick up the difference and went back to a dealer. I put the batteries side by side and it seems it is like others have said, makita wanting to sell newer batteries. All I did was got the Dremal out and opened up the end of the slot so the block could slide in. There was no third terminal or anything like that on the newer batteries.

@@ApriliaRSV4F It appears to be about Ah rating. Because older low power batteries also don't fit into new tools. Makita presumably are saying a minimum spec is needed to run those tools. If anyone has ever used an impact wrench, say on wheel studs, they'll have noticed there is a big difference between using low Ah vs high, eventhough voltage is the same.

THANKS! Just spent $120 on two new 5AH batteries for my older 1/2" impact driver. Was about to spend another $250 on a new one. I thought that new yellow slot was blocking it from fitting, great to know its just that little tab. Really made my day!

One thing to consider, I'm not sure if this mod would affect the battery from shutting down the tool before it's depleted the battery to the point where it couldn't come back.

Having same issue with my new cordless router. Large capacity batts fit well but my older smaller ones do not. Problem is with my new router the tab you chiseled away is metal and I see it connects to the electronics for purposes of charging. The thing with those yellow tab connectors is in the tool they connect to nothing but on the charger they do. My fix is to cut a thinner channel on my older batts and allow for the tab with a dremmel. Same thing and it works well. and I dont have to grind the metal tab on my tool away.

My wife bought me an Makita LXT 18V Lithiom Ion Kit of 3 tools and it was very annoying to find that whilst the labels and markings on all of it looked modern (LXT 18V LiOn) they were all the older style tools and none of the newer batteries I had would fit. After looking into it and adapters on ebay I found your video. Needless to say I took the Dremel to the lot and now they are all working perfectly with my 5 and 6Ah batteries. None of these tools have any type of middle data connector or a third connector, just the outer power conductors. All sales waffle aside I'm sure its just planned obsolescence to make you buy new tools. In this case I feel my wife was ripped off by a sales dude who was offloading older tools, but thats Aok, they work great and have great battery life now until they die. Thank you.

Instead of modifying the tool, I just cut off the thin piece of plastic on the battery that kept it from seating properly in the tool. If the white button is facing you, then remove the plastic edge on the far right. It is about one inch long. I used a Dremel to make fast work of this.

Just bought a new drill with a pair of 5ah batteries, because I could get it for roughly $30 more than just buying the batteries I intended to use in my BDF 451 drill. Got it in, tried the battery, didn't fit. Tried the battery in my dad's old BDF452 and fit fine. Spotted that same little plastic nub, and of course figured they changed this tiny detail to make everyone think they needed a new tool. But, before I cut that piece out, I had to check. Thanks for making the video. This was confirmation enough for what I was about to do anyway.

The newer Makita batteries seem to have a proper BMS, a low voltage cut off, over currant protection and cell balancing, where as I think some of the older batteries and the Chinese knockoffs might not, they seem to rely on the tool to cut out at low voltage, I've been building 9ah kit makita batteries with samsung 30q's from ali express for use in an ebike/tools, and opened up my other genuine makitas and chinese knockoffs to study, The knockoffs all have the power wires soldered directly to the terminals!! so with the right cells they chuck out all the amps the cells/terminals can handle, but also no LVC, over voltage or cell balancing, so would be more prone to damage/fire from misuse or short circuit, I did install balance taps on them for cell balancing.

I was wondering myself if I could retro one with 21700 cells and get a much longer run out of slightly larger size. I wish there were more people doing this or I knew someone with a 3d printer to print me a base that could hold them with the same top.
@stewartj00701
@stewartj00701 4 жыл бұрын
@@colorflames If you had a 3d printer i would think you could do that, the battery kit i used are the 5s 3p ones so they are slightly higher than standard, i glued the balance connector into where the vent hole is, so its very neat and balance charging is easy, if you cutout the plastic in the vent it fits nicely, so thay can still charge on the makita charger, With the genuine 30q's these batteries give allot more power and runtime than the 5ah makita batteries, i recorded max output of 59 amps on my bike, i was only getting around 4ah and 40 amps out of the makitas before they were cutting out, 30q's im getting over 8.5ah before my lvc kicks in.

👌 OK... Thanks man... I've been frustrated with the same little thing.... being a terribly busy man it took me a few years to Google my way to your explanation .... Worked like a charm 👍 Makita tools are almost indestructible so it is crucial that older tools work with these newer battery packs... It puzzles me why makita would put a little bullshit nob In the way to prevent new batteries to work with older tools.... 🤔... In my case the new 5 Amp pack wouldn't fit my makita sawzaw... It does now... 💪👍

Yea. Because more than likely anyone searching on youtube for videos regarding Makita + batteries is likely doing so because their batteries are either auto-killed by the charger if there are three consecutive battery faults when attempting to charge (like what happened with mine), or are just looking for info on replacement batteries (or repair) that don't cost an absolute fortune. Makita lists the BL1815 batteries for my drill/driver obsolete and doesn't even mention that there are new batteries that fit. My slightly newer Makita LXFD01 has the yellow battery connector and does not have that blocking tab that he removed in this video. I think im gonna end up buying batteries made by a third party. You can get 2x of them with 6.0Ah for $79 on amazon.
@ralphdesmond
@ralphdesmond 2 жыл бұрын
@@LBCAndrew I was thinking the same. Do we know if there's a way to evaluate the safe-ness of third party batteries for Makita? Don't want to make a mistake with some shoddy lithium batteries and have a hazard. but if they are just as safe, would be great to save some $$$ that way.

My BDF 451 did not have the Star on the tool, but the original batteries did have the Star on them. 3ah. That tool would require this same modification to use newer batteries. On the other hand, my white BDF 452 and the impact driver that came with it, neither tool or the 1.5ah batteries they came with had the star, yet a new 5ah star battery will fit both tools fine.

The difference is that if you're a contractor using it day in and day out, the Makita or tool of similar quality will last a good long while. My ryobi stuff is great for hanging curtain rods. I haven't had one last through serious use though. My hammer drill's gear box is loose as a goose after using it to drill into poured cement a bunch, and my Ryobi reciprocating saw cooked its field windings after demoing a small porch and a wire fence. The Ryobi stuff will work, but you can't beat on it like Makita, DeWalt, or even though they're the same manufacturer - Ridgid or Milwaukee.

I own Makita and have used ryobi. Ryobi was almost embarrassing to use.

The game these tool manufactures play with the batteries is just pure nonsense. I own and use makita cordless tools exclusively in a production/commercial environment everyday and they are tough and dependable. But enough with the silly games with the batteries.
