IPSGA - There is a reason why the I (Information) is first. You can't gain Infirmation without actively looking, without understanding what is happening around you and in front of you and without that understanding you do not know and you cannot know what your G (gear) and S (speed) should be. This is why the instructor stresses and continues to stress the importance of looking and through looking gaining the Infirmation you need to inform your action. Excellent video sir.

Brilliant video. Common sense or so you'd believe but no, not for many clueless road users nowadays.

Love your videos Phil. We had some email exchanges recently - I've learned more from your videos than any of the flash American ones all over You tube. Really well done. Thank you. Gordon

Good summary of issues, when I’m teaching defensive driving /riding and we discuss use of speed we talk about 4 issues. 1 the faster you go the bigger the mess( double speed =x4 energy on impact or x4 braking distance required to stop) and therefore less speed = less harm (halve your speed 1/4 the kinetic energy on impact), 2 the faster you go the less you see( peripheral vision become more useless and zone of vision at 60mph(100kph) is about 15% that when stationary. 3, The fast you go the less time/space you have to react to others decisions/actions. 4 the faster you go the less time/space others have to react to what you are doing. The more information bombarding you the slower you should travel so you have brain space and time to look, assess, decide and act on what is happening. Golden rule helps but is not exclusive, love the town riding and commentary really showing what this all means. 5mph in a 20mph zone because there was lots going on. Good job!

They say 'any idiot can ride fast but a safe rider knows when to slow.' , and its so true.

One hazard that is not so apparently recognised but is responsible for many if not most of the collisions on our roads, What is it... read on. The trouble or problem is in many circumstances, not speed at all but the failure to give adequate stopping distance between ourselves and the vehicle in front. A recent survey done by the IAM came to the conclusion with respondents stating that their greatest concern whilst on the road is TAILGATING and that's only the latest one of many if not all of such surveys. TAILGATING IS IN THE TOP THREE OF ANY CAUSES FOR CONCERN. SO IF WE ACTUALLY SLOWED DOWN AND KEPT SPEED WITH THE VEHICLE IN FRONT SO THAT IT BECOMES A ROLLING LIMIT POINT AND IF WE GIVE GOOD SAFER DISTANCE SO THAT THE DISTANCE THAT WE GIVE IS ONE THAT IS RECOMMENDED AS BEING A SAFE STOPPING DISTANCE THEN WE WOULD REDUCE COLLISIONS, ACIDENTS AND INCIDENTS BY AT LEAST 50% OF THEIR CURRENT HIGHS. ALL JUST BY BACKING OFF. NOT PUSHING FORWARDS OR MAKING FASTER PROGRESS BUT ALLOWING ONE TO FLOW WITH TRAFFIC . OF NOT RACING AROUND COUNTRY ROADS BE THEY A OR B ROADS OR UNCLASSIFIED AND GIVING IT SOME WELLY WITH THE THROTTLE TO KEEP TO THE N.S.L. BUT TO SLOW A LITTLE. MAYBE ONLY BY 5 MPH AND GIVE CONSIDERATION AND SAFER SPACE TO ALL OTHER ROAD USERS. AND RECEIVE THAT SAME CONSIDERATION FROM THEM. THEN WITH SAFER SPACE WE WILL ALL BE SAFER ON OUR ROADS NO MATTER WHAT THE SPEED LIMIT IS. Have you noticed that when you allow a TAILGATER to overtake you they immediately run to the rear of the vehicle in front and TAILGATE THEM. Further whilst on a main road you see nothing coming for a good distance and then there are any number of vehicles approaching you and no matter what the state of that queue is they are basically all TAILGATING each other except for the first vehicle. Then there is again an empty road space and again a series of vehicles again all TAILGATING. You generally don't get concerned about this situation cos you see it every day but you should be cos if any of those approaching vehicles need to emergency brake and can't do so safely without hitting the vehicle in front then they are more than likely going to swerve to our side of the road and then you will be head on with another vehicle at double our speed. It has happened in the past and all to frequently I am afraid. TAILGATING IS THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM . everyone sees it,a few recognise it but no one does anything about it. We have all become accustomed to believing that its the norm due to the amount of traffic there is on the roads today and that is not the truth, we can all make space if we want to do so AND OUR ROADS WOULD BE SAFER FOR IT. Its about time stopped for a while with regards to speeding and whilst I agree that inappropriate speeds has a lot to do with collisions its more a case that TAILGATING IS INVOLVED.SO IF WE KEPT SAFER SPACE WE WOULD ALL BE SAFER ROAD USERS. END OF........ Its of little use training road users to look ahead up the road to get an early view of any potential danger or hazard if the hazard is actually closer to us and staring us in the face, now is it.

Love that comment about it not being as simple as "change in speed limit, let's speed up!". There's a road near me that goes from a 30 to a national right before a bend. If you think "national, let's pin the throttle", you won't have enough time to realise that there's actually a roundabout right around that corner with no signs leading up to it 🤦‍♀️
