Such a fantastic video ! Although you are clearly explaining how this book is structured, it didnt automatically click with me, that the video was also cut in a similar fashion at first. Simply brilliant ! And it sorta plays with the "first impression", as you are given a specific peace of info, before you actually learn all the details surrounding it, changing your point of view in the whole process. Also, on a more personal note: Please, dont let yourself get pushed by people who cry out for more songs, or that you should do them exclusively. Bulmers Bookshelf is such a fantastic series and book "reviews" are getting rather scarce in general. Youre doing a mighty fine job and i would severely miss these videos if they had to move aside for more "by public demand" kinda stuff. Thank you so much for doing what youre doing :)
@DemonTomatoDave10 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Don't worry, I'm unlikely to stop doing either. The songs are just complicated enough that they take me a long time to do (since I'm fitting them in between actual work), whereas I'll always be reading something and it doesn't take long to talk about it. I sympathise with them though, I'd love to have more time to work on songs. Maybe I can figure out a way to justify it, a Patreon or something like that.
@MaverickHunterXZA10 жыл бұрын
DemonTomatoDave A Patreon would account for the time spend by writing songs, not a bad idea. Though you also have to live with people misinterpreting it as some form of eBegging. Some folks simply cant stand the fact, that their favourite KZbinrs earn money with their stuff as they think that "it cant be that hard" to make videos. I wish you all the best and hope that you will find a solution that helps you do what you want to do the most :)
@DemonTomatoDave10 жыл бұрын
MaverickHunterXZA That's exactly it, there's a big backlash against Patreon users right now and some of us are scared to set one up - of course, that means no more songs (or whatever it is) until we have no paying work that needs to be prioritised... it's a tricky business. And in the end it comes down to haters gonna hate, so... we should probably just go ahead and do it anyway. Hmm.
@MaverickHunterXZA10 жыл бұрын
DemonTomatoDave If you ask me, dont pay attention to those people. If they cant appreciate your work, they shouldnt be your target audience. But i know that its much easier said than done. It always hurts being accused of begging because "it worked without money beforehand" and yet, it is expected that yu pump out more and more quality content. It was the same with Brentalfloss. He has so much stuff going at the same time, that he constantly has to make vids explaining where he has been etc. Youre absolutely right in that you need a somewhat foolproof plan / time schedule to work out when and how to work on videos so that everything falls in place correctly. And yes, haters gonna hate, no matter what you do. If you do a fantastic book review, theyre going to cry out for music, if you compose a brilliant song, its the book review they want. But i think that, in fact, they appreciate whatever you put out, even though they have a rather "unique" way of saying it. Because wanting more is a sign that what you make is good stuff ;) It all comes down to "Do YOUR thing". Its your thing that people love and for what they came here in the first place.

Slight spoiler alert. After first watching this review I had the book in the back of my mind for a while, and now I've finally read it. You mention that you're not as clever as Iain Banks, but revisiting this video, I'll have to disagree at least a bit. The ways you have made your story/review around the book be analagous to the actual book are really intelligent. Always the chair.. I love how the book tricks you into misjudging Zakalwe by using the leaps in time, forcing you to reevaluate him throughout the entire book. Each of his reactions mean something different a few chapters ahead than they do when you read them. So thanks for introducing me to this book. I won't take any future reviews on your channel lightly.

This series sounds fantastic! It sounds very similar to one of my very favorite sci-fi book series that starts with "The January Dancer" by Michael Flynn. There is one character that is present all throughout the events in the first book without the reader actually realizing the character is there. This character becomes instrumental in the events of the third and fourth books to the point that I count this character as a main character.

Banks before but your video has really mae me want to check him out, should I start with Use of Weapons first?
@DemonTomatoDave10 жыл бұрын
If you think you can handle it! It's a complex one this video only gives you a taste of it. Honestly, I'd start with Player Of Games, just because it's an immediately enjoyable sci-fi story that gets you excited about Banks' world. Use of Weapons kind of assumes that world, and sits it on the back seat to focus very closely on the characters, which of course is good for this book, but it's less likely to get you hooked on the series' setting. And of course a lot less penetrable.
@NextGenVixen10 жыл бұрын

I think you can read it. When I was researching a bit (to try and understand more about this book once I'd finished it), I saw a lot of fans of the series saying that you shouldn't start with Phlebas (oops!) because it's not the most penetrable Culture novel, but once you HAVE read it, you can go straight to Look To Windward because it's a sort-of sequel. Who said this or whether they're trustworthy or even sentient is unknown.

Wow, you mentioned the Traffic Centre, not a great place, really. However Use of Weapons is an amazing novel. Zakalwe knows his war. He's also not scared of using this knowledge on behalf of The Culture because they have forgotten/never had this information. They are or have never been fighters! Fighting is in Zakalwe's blood however, it always has been. He has a history, he wants to be forgiven for some of his past but can he earn this forgiveness? A glorious novel moving forward in time exploring Zakalwe's latest mission for The Culture whilst also delving into the past and what made him the soldier that he is.
@1nva0er55 Жыл бұрын
The Culture is not at all a stranger to war. What they are is too good at it. They are too powerful, too pragmatic. They can just blow up planets or drown solar systems in black hole bombs. They fight wars in nanoseconds. They are an absolute unstoppable force. And that is not always applicable. You can't be a force of good if you solve any disagreement with apocalyptic levels of destruction. More often than not you need manipulation, subterfuge, quiet if effective ways to win wars or simply avoid it. Zakalwe is that turned to eleven. The guy is so good at obtuse thinking he can not only avoid wars, he can somehow win unwinnable ones. He's a literal microsurgeon, and it's always better to use that than nuke the city.

This was...perplexing. Not so much the video or the points you made or the stories you told. More to do with how I feel about the video itself. It's a fascinating approach to it, kind of confusing until the pieces came together. I realized early-ish what you were doing and why, but it very much felt initially like it would make me thoroughly hate the book itself if it followed that pattern. A certain amount of bitterness lingered through the video and is still present now, but I can't really say just how justified it is. I have no idea if I like this idea. None at all.

Haha, actually I think I know what you mean. The book gave me a similar uneasy feeling up until the end, where it all suddenly makes sense, and my video doesn't have that big finish. But yeah, there's this dark feeling reading the book that you are being kept out of the loop, and I did need to look up a couple of online discussions to really understand it (or read the book again, that would've done it as well, but who has time for that). Yeah. Don't worry, I definitely don't take offence to that comment :)

In that case, and with more thought on the matter away from the weird sensations, I think it would actually be positive feedback, because you seemed to have rather effectively nailed what you were going for. Ah yes. That damn chair. Personally - and forgive me - I hated Use of Weapons. Yes, yes, yes... I was probably (certainly) not clever enough for it, and I'm sure I'd have a completely different experience reading it a second time, but... I dislike it too much to read it again. The characters just didn't interest me. Not even in retrospective reflection. In fact, the more I thought about it, the more it annoyed me. I really didn't feel the story was going anywhere. Not even with the twist at the end, which to me seemed pointless and forced. It was almost Shayamalanesque in the worst way. (And yes, I got to use an "-esque" word! Suck it!!) In fact - and forgive me again - it was a bit like your review. A purposely convoluted mess whose convolutedness didn't seem to have much of a purpose. (In all honesty, I did enjoy your review - and much more so than reading UoW, because at least I could relate and empathise with your "side stories".) I enjoyed PoG a LOT more, and same for Excession, which I'm currently on the last pages of. I enjoyed CP more than UoW, but that was also a bit messy. In fact (and this may give you a sense of what kind of person/reader I am), what I enjoyed the most about CP was actually the epilogue, where you got the post-war accounts of events. Anyway. Good video. Enjoyable to watch.

@@Gnug215 haha, no it's a total coincidence -- although I did get Phlebas because it was the first one, and the other two because they seemed to be the most popular at the time, so maybe that's how they chose what to put in your pack. I haven't read Excession, no.
@Gnug2155 жыл бұрын
@@DemonTomatoDave Alright. :) Well, I certainly can recommend Excession (even though I'm not quite finished, and the resolution might, of course, possibly piss me off.) I feel it's the most... Culture-y book of the bunch, really. CB is a pretty good introduction to the Culture (both the series and the Culture culture itself), and PoG gives you a good sense of how the Culture compares itself to other cultures - and what it does about/to them. UoW to me is "just" about two people. To me there's very little Culture about them. Excession is VERY Culture. There's a switch between characters and storylines in the various chapters, but all of them offer some insight into Culture culture. The chapters with the people offer a lot of info about their Culture life. Then there's the chapters with the Minds/Ships, and there's a LOT of those. Whole sections of Minds/Ships having long conversations. It's really well done and super interesting, IMO. But like I said before, I'm the kind of person who found the epilogue of CB the most interesting in that book, so keep that in mind.

You do know that Iain Banks and Iain M Banks are the same humanoid right?
One of his other Culture novels is a sequel to Phlebas, right? Perhaps I'll re-read it when I'm about to read its sequel. Pitch it to me though, what's so good about it? It definitely wasn't the book's fault that I had trouble finding time to read it, but I did find time to do other stuff, so perhaps I just didn't get it.
