personally, i would use long division when dealing with imaginary numbers. so if x=5i, then i would make it so that one side of the equal sign is zero. then that would be my divisor for the long division.

If you are not given any zeros then you will want to see if you can solve by factoring first. If not I would graph it to find one real zero and then do synthetic division from there.
