Key Switches also work in the piano roll. So if you know what your key switches do you can just program it right into the melody. It's really helpful for guitar plugins like you said, but some VSTs have slides and legatos etc hooked up on the key switches too. Def worth looking through the documentation for the VST. It can be the difference between an instrument sounding corny and 8 bit to sounding like the full on real thing. Finding out about switches changed the game for me.

Arcade has an adjustable ui so you change the size of it when you open the plugin by putting your cursor in any 4 corners of the vst and closing it in to shrink it.

Shoto Beats Go to the drop down menu in the piano roll. Click “view”, then click “content” and you should see “note colors”

When you know your pattern is good and its still not hitting how u want it to try focusing on the sound selection. Switch through as many sounds as you need until it sounds good to your ears. Thats a little breakthrough I’ve had recently. Also if you see the melody itself isnt as good try deleting notes and see how they affect the melody after. Sometimes it’ll make it sound 10x better because we tend to draw out complex melodies at first
