How do we know the D Dorian? Why not D Aeolian or Phrygian? From the perspective of what key signature are we choosing Dorian?

I swear, this progression is in the key of Bb. And if u use the Bb major pentatonic scale to improvise on this two chords, I promise u, u will think u re a pro. Really missed u a lot Simon. My piano journey started with ur videos and still ur videos. I pray to meet u in person someday.

Why can you use the g blues scale over the Ebmaj7 chord? Is there a relationship
@kelvinmathe3908

Is it because rootless Ebmaj9 is Gmin7 (which you play in this video), meaning then you can use the g blues scale on it?

Hi Simon, Thank you for teaching this one, this is the sound I'm looking for to achieve for the longest time. I'm just wondering why are the chords in Gm7 and Fmaj7 while the keys for improvisation are in Emaj7 and Dm7. How does this work?

I’m not Simon but basically the FMaj7 chord is from the Dm9 chord; if you played a Dm9 chord and removed the root (which is the D), then you’d get what is a FMaj7 chord. Same with the Gm7 chord (Gm7 is just an EbMaj9 without the root). So technically he’s still playing over the EbMaj7 to Dm7 chord progression with, he’s just using different voicings in the left hand to add some colour, which is why using the Eb and D scales still worked. Hope this helped :)

Why does the G blues scale sound good over the Eb major chord ? G is the major third of Eb, is it the reason why ?

Amazing! Question: why did you choose d dorian and not the regular corresponding mode ionian, and here aeolian mode, like you did with the ebmaj7?
@TheoVenables
@TheoVenables 4 жыл бұрын
Ionian is just the major scale. Using the D major scale (Ionian) over Dminor would not sound great because you are using a major scale against a minor chord. Whereas D dorian is a minor scale so using it over a minor chord sounds great. Dorian was chosen by mr.PianoPig because its justs a Colour you could just D minor instead of D Dorian.
@Piano_Pig
@Piano_Pig 4 жыл бұрын
It was a D minor chord so we have to choose a minor scale or mode to go over the top. We could have chosen D natural minor or D Dorian, and I personally prefer the sound of the Dorian in this context. 🙂

Hey Simon, seems you really worked hard on your timing. I remember watching your videos two or three years ago and your impros were much more wobbly back then. Now the voicings AND the rhythmic part sound REALLY professional. Anyways, thanks a lot for his one, I really appreciate your effort. Hope you're continuing to put out some more "advanced" stuff like this. I guess this would be very helpful to a lot of people!

With the inversions being played, Ebmaj7 looks like Gm7 and Dm7 looks like Fmaj7 -- I'll have to think about that for a bit -- must be the scales being played in RH that makes it Ebmaj not Gmin.
