Old doors frequently suffer from air leaks, gaps, and drafts. This short video from the honest carpenter will show you how to install metal/vinyl weatherstrip / weatherstripping to cut down on drafts and air leaks, and keep pests out!
(Newer doors use a different kind of weatherstrip that slots into a dado or kerf in the stop trim of the door. That kind of weatherstripping is easily replaced by slotting in new weatherstrip. I've linked some above if you have a newer door assembly with this issue.)
Tools:
Hacksaw
Drill
Utility Knife
Tape Measure
HOW TO ADD/INSTALL WEATHERSTRIPPING TO OLD DOORS:
1) Measure area between stop trim along top of door.
2) Layout this measurement on weatherstripping
3) Cut weatherstrip with utility knife and hacksaw
4) Install weatherstrip using a drill and supplied screws.
5) Measure for side pieces of weatherstripping pulling from bottom of door up to installed top piece of weatherstrip.
6) Cut and install side pieces of weatherstrip
Pieces should contact door in order to ensure weather seal. However, be sure not to push against the door too hard during installation. It can be helpful to install top screw, then middle and lower screw. Then, make sure that the door shuts well--if it does, fill in with remaining screws.

As a locksmith, I can honestly say I’ve done countless service calls to fix locks that were damaged by improperly installed weather stripping. The most important thing you can do before you install the first screw is, shut the door so it latches and........... LOCK THE DEADBOLT!!!!!! (If there is one) Then, go ahead and *gently* push the stripping up against the door, Mark with a pencil and install your screws. It’s important to lock the deadbolt because quite often the strike plates for the deadbolt and the knob/lever latch, aren’t aligned properly. It not properly installed, the deadbolts bolt will drag across the strike plate with too much resistance and eventually break. I’ve have seen this problem countless times, weather stripping causes lock and door closing/fit issues almost by default.

@The Honest Carpenter When I mark the screw holes to install the metal weatherstripping , should I shut and latch the door with/without the kerf strips (that has been inserted into the groove on the top and latch side edge? The kerf strips don't properly seal the old door but the door does shut latch easily. In other words do I remove all old weatherstripping first?

I put mine on, am very inexperienced with this. My deadbolt feels tighter even if I loosen all the screws on that side. When I tightened them it was even worse. I'm not sure if I should redo the entire thing or if a little tightness in the deadbolt is okay.

The best tip was that on the long pieces you want to have a screw very close to the end...otherwise you will have that end flopping around until it gets to the screw. Do two cuts, that was a great idea, so as to get your screws close to the ends of the long pieces. Actually this also applies to the top shorter piece. Great video. Thank you, Dr. George W.

He couldn't get the frame to line up right and ended up with some significant gaps on his door. My brother also broke the threshold while trying to help get the door to shut properly. Thank you! My house was built in 1949 on a regular foundation that one previous owner decided to hand dig a basement. Well, no door fits the exterior doorway so several years ago, a friend who had an extra steel door w/foam interior, cut that door to sort of fit the space, then wrapped the open end with steel that he cut off. Well, it's ugly but it worked better than the hollow-core wooden one that was there before and had a huge hole at the bottom that all kinds of wildlife loved. Anyway, that big basement is my dog's house during the day and it's conditioned but there's a huge gap around the door jamb that just needs a good weather-stripping fix. This is just the ticket!!! I don't have a hack saw. Guess I'm gettin one.

Thanks for the links and demo. My door has too much gap and the latch doesn't hold it tight against traditional foam strips, even the wide v-strips. this is a great solution for me b/c we can seal from the outside and ensure it's snug all around even if the gaps a wide in one place and narrow in another, and it doesn't jam up the door from having too much foam in the tighter places. Special thanks for the links. I couldn't find anything online b/c everyone is using foam between the door and frame.

Since you have made this post fairly recently compared to others, I have a question or two for you if you don't mind. We have a screen door that we are wanting to use this set on. My husband just isn't sure it would work because the hinges are built into the door frame. Did you run across an issue like that? If so, what did you do about it? Thank you for your help in advance.

@@tamrawiegand9427 So I don’t have a screen door but it could be an issue depending on how much space you have between the front door and the screen door . I would look up the measurements on the width of the kit and see if it will work for you . We are going to install a screen door this coming spring and I know it will work for us . Hope this helped . 😁

I used this type of weatherstripping on the entry doors of my antique house and successfully weatherstripped doors that are 130 years old. This works!

A BIG thank you to you! That was derailed but concise. Easy to follow. Never had this suggested once when inquiring from 'experts' at the big box stores, and a local hardware.

Thank you. I have a lovely old French door for my front door. While it's not badly hung, there is a gap at the top on the latch side.

Thank you for this! We live in a very old house, and in the winter when it's windy, you can hear the wind whistling in around the door! I can do this!! And I need the tip for under the door, too!!

A very easy to comprehend video! How would you go about stopping leakage in the middle of a door with sidelight that opens? The exteriors of the door and opening sidelight do not leak, just the top and where the two come together. The mullion is very thin, maybe no more than an inch thick, and I doubt screws could be put in it without considerable splitting. I have a slotted weatherstrip in the middle now, but when the wind blows from the southwest, I can feel it in our foyer.

Great help, Thank You! 2 questions: 1. What to do for French Doors opening outward? Have air gaps at center jamb and corners. 3. What to do for exterior door with stock on weatherstripping at bottom of door, but some has come loose and I'd dragging loose.

I commented on this earlier, but I have to add another. It's been close to zero here in Buffalo, and our unheated side entrance has been brutally cold. In the past I managed to seal most of the cracks with adhesive backed foam stripping, but there was always a draft. We couldn't keep liquids there because we were afraid they would freeze. I installed this kind of insulating strip and a new door sweep yesterday. It's amazing (kind of like when I discovered heat tape for my pipes). There is no draft, and the entryway is comfortable. I guess I'm teachable. Thank you again. I've subscribed, and I look forward to finding new solutions to old problems.

Super helpful. The maintenance man installed it into the door itself 😂. With your help I was able to take it off and install it the right way.

Been trying for years to remedy this problem but nothing seemed to work for long. Definitely doing this before the snow flies. Feel real dumb for not even thinking about real weather stripping instead of the foam sticky stuff.
