TY! Your solution is great for when a monitor fails (or gets fiddly) and you need backup. But it’s even better for headless Mac Mini (or Studio) setup and maintenance. Furthermore, this is great to make Mac Mini/Studio travel-worthy… without some (huge or fiddly mini) monitor. I already have an iPad so using it makes all the sense in the world, and reduces extra gear (like buying/carrying a monitor just to get a headless computer running). Thank you!

AstroPad is a wireless device that plugs into a USB-C port on my mini and it works great. You first load a free app on the mini, open it, open the app on your iPad and it automatically detects it and done! I just got it last week to turn my 2017 iMac into a primary screen for the mini when I’m at home. So with one tiny device I saved my beautiful 27” screen from oblivion and have both an iPad AND a MacOS screen for the mini. Um, I think Apple already came up with a solution. It's called the MacBook Air. If you really want to use your ipad as a monitor, you could use either the MacBook with Sidecar. Benefits: Smaller footprint and lighter, use it with a battery, extra monitor, no cables. The only real scenario where it may make sense is if you only have an ipad and no other Apple computer and are looking for the least expensive way to use MacOS, assuming you already have a keyboard and mouse. Yet if you buy a keyboard and mouse from Apple, the price for a basic Mac Mini, keyboard, and mouse, comes to $847. An M2 Macbook Air is $999 so you're really only saving $152, but with the Air, you're truly portable. Not trying to be too critical, but can you explain why use the setup you suggest instead of a MacBook Air?
@LearningandTechnology6 ай бұрын
This isn’t a video suggesting what you SHOULD do - it’s just a video showing what you CAN do. Obviously, if you are in the market for a completely new technology refresh - then there are many options. (Or, my iPad 😀) That said - plugins are required for power - so they are “semi” portable in that regard. They sure can give a lot of power for less money though.

Actually this how I Mac compute and I love it. I use my iPad Pro as the main and only display for my headless M1 Mac mini with wireless sidecar via VNC. I wish Apple made this an easier out of the box connection. For example, a simple solution would be in Mission Control on the iPad Pro, I should be able to tap Screen Mirroring and “PULL” the Mac mini “screen” to my iPad if it’s on the same iCloud account and network. To start using my current setup, first I had to connect my Mac mini to my HDMI TV since I don’t have a monitor and I had to connect a mouse and a keyboard, but once set up to do all the necessary setup, I no longer need the mouse, keyboard or display to operate my Mac. I just launch VNC on my iPad Pro, type in my password and my Mac mini display shows up on my iPad and I can do all my my computing I need to. Luckily i don’t need to do anything pro and require fine touch point editing, the Mac is better at batch processing and batch editing like adding tags in the photo app and file management. Also, some BitTorrent archiving and backing-up to my personal iCloud. I wouldn’t mind if to get MacOS on the iPad Pro, Apple choose this route, wired or wireless as A Main use case instead of only as an alternate use case as it is now. Give us faster 1:1 response time. When connected, the Mac OS and the iPadOS merge into one cohesive experience instead of a mirroring experience, doubling the processing while exchanging data, in a synchronize experience. I’m sure this is hard to do because a risk of data loss for unexpected Disconnection either wire or Wireless. But I’m sure Apple can make it a great user experience and they will get the sale of a Mac computer like the Mac mini or the Mac studio or whatever and the sale of iPad Pro for people who want to compute this way. An individual Mac experience as it is now, an individual iPadOS experience as it is now, and a new unique combine computing experience for those who want macOS on iPad Pro hardware. I’ve suggested this use case in Apple feedback for years, but it seems to be falling in deaf ears, so I guess the more people who request this type of computing experience of a combine macOS and iPad hardware experience would have to file their own feedback suggestion also. My Mac mini is pretty much in one location at home because it connected to multiple external hard drives but I can use my iPad Pro wirelessly to Mac computer. But I like your solutions with the HDMI connection dongle, the wireless mouse and the Bluetooth keyboard. Whenever I get a new Mac mini with more internal hard drive space I’ll be able to eliminate the external hard drives and I will have more flexibility of a portable Mac mini all self-contained that I can physically connect to my iPad Pro and I have even greater best of both worlds of macOS and iPadOS and portability.

i dont know if the question is dumb, but if i connect my ipad via hdmi->usb c to my windows laptop, it should also work with camo studio as a second display, right? Great Video
@LearningandTechnology3 ай бұрын
Not dumb at all! It won’t work exactly like that - you need the input cable - so the one I link in the description. However, it can work and I’ll do a video on that for everyone

This is great if you already have the iPad and Mac Mini. An Air is basically a complete system in one - so it sort of depends on how you intend to use things and what you may already have.

So I have been researching this very thing and have seen several methods to do this from several KZbin channels. I am interested as well because I do photo editing and use Lightroom and Photoshop frequently. I needed some more on the go however I did try this as described in this video and what I found is that I would lose signal, and my screen would look like the old TVs where you can adjust the verticals in a horizontals, it was out of adjustment and couldn’t figure out how to fix it. I looked at two other options, the first I found that there was a severe lag time from operating my mouse or keyboard to the output device. The second was a Pay software and I didn’t think $80 was worth it. The last option I tried is to use the proprietary Mac software for screen sharing, which works very well however, the full desktop version of Lightroom or Photoshop requires a lot of screen area to control the different options available.
@LearningandTechnologyАй бұрын
@@NestoRides514 I haven’t used this for photo editing (although there is a native Lightroom App for the iPad you may wish to look at) The “test” pattern should not show up with CAMO Studio (free) - it may be a time out? This is the solution I’ve been using and it has been working well.

Can the touch screen on the iPad still be used to select apps on the Mac mini, or is a mouse still necessary?
@LearningandTechnology7 ай бұрын
You will still need a mouse - it only acts as a screen for showing what’s on the Mini. There is a way around this if you use Parallels and Remote Control your mini - however, that’s a different process (and I do have a video on it as well 😀

just sell all of this and buy a proper macbook
@LearningandTechnology4 ай бұрын
Only if that’s what you want.
@petucker5484 ай бұрын
Because you can do something doesn’t mean you should do it. This is a perfect example. Just bought a new MacBook Air or if you want to really get a deal by a refurbished MacBook Air.
@LearningandTechnology4 ай бұрын
@@petucker548 This has great utility in the correct circumstances. I like the power and functionality of a Mac Mini and find that this solution allows me to bring it with me to more environments - without the need to carry or arrange a monitor. Although not a solution that may work from you - it does for others. Also - a MacBook Air does not run iOS Apps - so this solution allows you to have more functionality in that regard (but less for the mini - as it does require power). So you have to figure out what you want.

Great video and great concept! One question: Do you use Camo Studio rather than using Apple Sidecar because it is better or (perhaps) because your iPad doesn't support Sidecar? Thank you!
@LearningandTechnology4 ай бұрын
Good question! Sidecar is when you want to use your iPad as a second monitor. In this set up, I want to use my iPad as the main (and only) monitor. So that’s how CAMO Studio helps.

The full screen will maintain the aspect ratio of the Mac - don’t may be possible if you adjust the display settings in OSX. I haven’t tried this yet, but will check.

Also if softwares like toonboom can be installed on the Mac mini m2 and worked on !
