Agree with using all vacation/sick time or as now called PTO -Paid Time Off. I used every day I had. I saw during all my years of working that when you get in your 50’s and 60’s, employers don’t care about any loyalty. It happened to very nice people when I started working full time, it happened to my dad, later on to my husband and finally me. My husband had 31 years with the same employer. When they want to cut staff, they go to the older employees because younger ones are less expensive. My advice too is take all the time offered.

I'm one of the old guy subscribers to the show. I retired at 61, and a 401k is a big part of our retirement. I'm also one of those guys who who worked up the ladder, but took time for family vacations. More importantly, we structured our expenses such that my wife has always been a stay at home mom. Starting to save, even small amounts at a young age works and it's important. But far more important is giving to your church, to people in need, and to worthy charitable organizations. "He who refreshes others will himself be refreshed." Set aside work and savings, God has blessed our family far more than I deserve.

Thank you Buddy, In 1982, as a candidate for the U.S. Congress, I ran on a proposal based in our American Heritage, "if taxation without Representation was Tyranny, then Limitless Taxation is Lunacy"! Paying taxes from Cradle and even past the Grave is intolerable acts against the Citizens of the United States. I wanted All Taxation to end at 65 years old. A side benefit to this would be families keeping Grandma and Grandpa with them in their Golden Years to help with purchasing power. Thank you for rekindling this desperately needed concept! Very Respectfully,

True. After my husband retired from the army, we were both lucky enough to get jobs in our home town at a state university. The biggest benefit was the 2 for 1 match on our 403B. If we put in a dollar, the university put in 2! That plus his military retirement has put us in a decent position. We have both taken on part time work, but it is work that we really enjoy. We are still in our 60s, and in very good health, so we are taking trips and enjoying our time. But we both worked more than one job most of our lives to get in this position. We also have stayed out of debt. All we have right now is our mortgage. We refinanced in 2019 and got a 2.3% interest rate. We will stay in this house until we die.

Social Security is a ponzi scheme, and 401ks are infected with fees, and if you need to get at your money, it's infected with taxes. You can plan, I did but when my company sent our jobs to India, I needed that money and lost a lot to taxes. Pensions made sense, but companies prefer giving golden parachute to CEOs that run companies into the ground and destroy the American tax base by shipping jobs overseas. I don't say they don't deserve big bucks. They do if their stocks are high and their company is fired on all 8 AMERICAN cylinders.

In my experience it is both. Actually Social Security was originally suppose to be supplemental income. My wife and I because of a medical emergency our Health Insurance would not cover was wiped out on that AND the tax paid was crazy. Thankfully, God provides. We've just had to drastically downsize and simplify.

Yep, a frequently overlooked conflict of interest. I would like to see them make the government more efficient; but how many jobs will be lost and how will that effect the economy. So many generations of poor decisions in our country. Many more people should have been directed to better jobs than civil service. But then they took those other jobs, those alternate career paths, away by outsourcing everything or moving all the jobs overseas. Probably all part of the plan.

I totally disagree. Perhaps you shouldn't pay income taxes on your SS benefits but it is absurd to say that multi-millionairs shouldn't pay anything on investment income. And if you mean ANY taxes, it is absurd to say someone shouldn't pay property taxes on their $10,000,000 home. I modest exclusion on a portion of your primary home might make sense, but that is it.

I grew up in Germany. For us (upper middle class) it was normal to go on holiday in all parts of the world (France, Mexico, USA, Japan, Turkey, Namibia) ... and many people from around the world also go on holiday in Germany. As a child, I was always surprised why I NEVER saw US Americans vacationing with us in Germany. MAXIMUM a few US pensioners in southern Germany. But not young people. I was then told, "Well, they don't have 30 days of vacation per year like we do, but only 12. And sometimes two jobs at the same time. I was so amazed at how the richest and most powerful country in the world offers so “little” to its citizens.

I now have Social Security and a small pension, live very economically, still need to work part time to make ends meet.
