Was in the dealership last week and discussed ordering my new car, they hinted at a hybrid and I cut them off, “Don’t even go there, I have nowhere to charge at home so I would be lugging a heavy battery around with no benefit, and if you suggest an EV I’m walking out the door” They laughed … so it’s the diesel the same as last time then.

Not even tempted by a mild hybrid the battery isn't big enough to make a weight difference. It takes in some charge with hills. And the motor really helps the engine in the lower rpm range.

Last year I bought a manufacturer approved used Mazda 6. Earlier this year when its MOT and service was due I took it to my local Mazda dealer, mostly so that if they found any major problems arguing about the warranty would either be easier or not necessary. The MOT came back with advisories for the brake discs and they quoted me about £900 for discs and pads. (I don't remember the exact prices but it was £300+ for the rear and £500+ for the front. I suspect he quoted it like that to make it sound cheaper.) I took it to a trusted local mechanic who quoted me less than £450. When he got started on the work he called me to ask why I wanted the discs and pads changed because there was nothing wrong with them. He charged me £30 + VAT for half an hour labour. I won't be taking it back to the main dealer. Love the car, hate the dealer.

The last time I dealt with a dealer was at Audi. The mechanism on our cabriolet was failing. After charging me about £1k to replace various parts to "fix" it, it was still failing. In the end they had to sit in the boot whilst operating the mechanism and found fault in one sensor. I dared them to charge me another penny to fix it! I'll never visit a main dealer again.

What people get wrong about plug in hybrids is that if you drive it around town you will achieve the stated milage or surpass it, now if you drive a lot on motorways it is a waste of time and you shouldn't buy one. I own 330e and sometimes I think that fuel in the tank will go bad due to how little of the engine I use, but then if I need to go somewhere further it's not a big deal.

Mine cost £8K 9 years ago, as an 8 year old car (V70 D5), same money as stoopid BMW you are talking about now. I don't anticipate any major issues re-engine - these can last 3-400K, and mine uses zero oil between annual oil changes - or gearbox (manual, never buy an auto!), and recent jobs eg engine mounts, a brake calliper, front discs 2 years ago, are par for the course with any 160K mile car (first front disc swap in 17 years). The car owes me nothing, should last till he's 25 years old. He still does between 40 and 60 mpg, and never less than the former. I am saving the planet single handed!

A while ago I looked into getting a BMW ActiveHybrid 7, as there are loads of them cheap, with a dead battery. Then I found out that despite the battery being tiny and having almost no range, the used batteries are £5-6k. All this to get 3-4 extra mpg. They never ever repay the cost of the extra electrical junk in saved fuel. I don't want any form of EV or Hybrid, they all have the exact save problem, which is an expensive battery that makes the car disposable once the battery dies. It's sad that I can never own a car newer than the ones I already have

It's a great car just like the 330e is (and even better is the Merc W205 350e and 300e), but only with a long used-car warranty. I bought my numerous hybrids in Germany with low miles and 5 years of warranty. No stress owning them and easy to sell on. Without warranty? Never. My 330e had its HLE-module (high voltage electronics) get fried due to a voltage spike coming through the charger. Cost? Well over 4000€ (plus labour I believe), and it took a month to get fixed. Worst of all, I thought approved high-quality chargers won't let such voltage spikes through, but the guys at the service department say it happens occasionally, they see it all the time. So PHEVs are ticking time-bombs of huge cost repairs! Only with warranty.

I had a 330e (briefly) a year ago. Lovely car to drive, bought it from Evans Halshaw in Gateshead. They'd not done any of the presales preparation they'd promised, neither had they repaired a couple of faults it had before sale (steering rack ball joint and fuel filler cap not opening - a common 330e fault, easy fix, a sensor that fails). They agreed to take it back in to do the work, but then told me they were going to refund me the price of the car as it was uneconomical to repair. The reason for this was main dealers don't repair, they just replace, then there's the hourly rate on top of the part cost, so thousands of pounds for a new fuel tank and steering rack, rather than replace the ball joint and sensor. I toyed with the idea of doing the work myself but there was also this other problem which I wasn't sure it had, never had the car long enough to find out, and it was the 330e's biggest problem, no, not the battery (which is a tiny thing under the boot floor, not a massive one), but the electric motor drives the car via the gearbox, in 6th or 8th gear, not sure which, and the gearbox was never designed for this, so gives up. The car was £14,500, I got that back, but lost hundreds on lost insurance and the contents of the car were never all returned. I noticed a while later, the car was back up for sale, at a much lower price, and it still had the lead for the lost dashcam hanging out the trim, and my puncture repair kit in the boot!

About 12 years ago I bought a Camero 1978 for £2000, had it for many years sold it for £5000. I found the answer, buy older cars cheap. My wife now drives around in a nissan note over 10years old paid £1300 for it years ago she uses it daily and we could probably get our money back off it. FREE motoring. I have a 1999 Toyota land cruiser I could get more money for it than what I paid. Both are cheap as chips. My back street mechanic Steve is so reliable and affordable. I've said the exact same thing about EVs for the past 5 years, namely who is going to spend £7 - what I paid for my used diesel, and around the most I will ever spend on a car - if that car is going to have 10 year old batteries that will cost a five-figure sum to replace if they fail, I'm not interested, and neither will millions of other people be. That's why EVs will never work. The vast majority of people drive a car worth less than £10k and the government (and the entire EV community) isn't taking any notice of that. You can find a recon engine for a 10- year old ICE car for less than a couple of grand in most cases, same with gearboxes and so on. It's not even a debate.

I'm driving a plugin hybrid(2020 Seat Leon) myself. They can be pretty efficient on longer trips but you really have to experiment with the car to figure out how which is so ffing stupid. What is really holding the plugins back, the older ones at least, is the insanely slow charging speed couple with the fact that they will chew through the battery in no miles at all if you let it. I also wonder why it was only really Mercedes that gave diesel hybrids a go, cause that is one efficient combo even on a dead battery. Well we all know why, diesel is the new devil for some unscientific reasons. Cant have people be able to reach another country on 1 tank of fuel, no no.

Maybe the government should print even more money and give it to everybody - this could solve this issue 🤦?

I hear what your saying,I was going to buy a mitsubishi phev, and after looking into what would happen if the main battery went, for a start mitsubishi are not around now and the prices to sort it were eye watering, unless you can find somewhere who will pull it apart and replace the bit that gone, I'm in North Wales so if that happens it's get it moved to someone who can do it,so don't bother with one,how ever did go for a BMW 640d and I know it can have it's problems but I have a very good specialist not far from me so that's the way I went

The BMW fuel consumption interested me. I have a 2019 BMW 440i coupe. It has a 3L 6 cylinder petrol turbo engine. Driven normally it will do between 42-44 mpg on my fairly regular, South West to North East run. It very rarely drops below the 330e figure you quoted. I went into a BMW dealership a few weeks ago, I was interested in a new car, which was sitting outside the door. The salesman would not let me look at it, as one of the dealer staff was using the car, for personal business. I am still waiting for them to contact me to view it. I believe I may be black listed from my local Porsche and BMW dealerships, (its the same dealer group) for leaving negative feedback.

The EV crowd would try and come back with “Well what if your engine goes that’s going to be expensive to replace”, but how often does it happen that you require an ENTIRELY new engine? Extremely rarely as most of the time it’s just a part or 2 that need replacing, with battery cells there is no part replacement it’s either all or nothing.

It's easy to get a £7500 loan to buy a vehicle, it'll take 3-4 years to pay back £9-10k but having to fund another £10k would brick the vehicle for the project.

I personally won’t touch a modern BMW with a barge pole. The company I work for have a fleet of four 330es for our management team which have been nothing but trouble. To the point where our General manager made a comment to myself in car park while we were going home at the end of the day do you won’t to swop cars for the journey home as he could guaranty his car would throw up some warning lights on his trip home. By contrast I have a 2014 Honda civic which never miss’s a beat at 80000 miles which I wouldn’t get rid of if I won the lottery.

In the last 12 months, I've had to replace the 12v battery on each of my petrol cars (1981 Triumph Acclaim & 2003 Nissan Micra). They both cost me £65 each, and that was for parts and fitting. So how the heck can BMW justify over £500 for a 12v battery? I know main dealers charge a premium, but this is crazy.

Least stolen car in the US are Tesla because they have cameras all around the car and stolen cars can be tracked. Maintenance is minimal as very few moving parts. Tesla has an 8 year warranty on their battery and drive units, if the battery degrades by 30% they will replace it free of charge. With hybrids you still have the combustion engine maintenance and the complexity of running 2 different engine types in one car. Plus hybrids catch fire more than any other car type.

The fuel economy isn’t great. But I know loads that have been used on Uber/Bolt. And I know of nobody that has a 330e, 530e, 740e or Le or a 745 e or Le that has had a battery failure. You will get nearly 40mpg out of a 330e. Even if you did have a battery failure you would buy a used battery from a dismantlers.

You would need to replace all the modules at the same itme, mixing and matching modules with different degradation is not a good idea as the BMS will not track them separately.

Mainly because a 16 year old can do it with fairly basic tools and equipment. I remember using a barn beam and a ratchet strap as an engine hoist. Safety first They probably don't offer the service because they don't need to, unless it's a MK1 Leaf. Plenty of videos out there of battery swaps for those.

If it cost over £500 to replace the 12v battery at the dealers, I'd go to a local garage. So why would you get a quote for the main battery from the dealer? The only way to get the high MPG is plug in every day and only do low mileage like I do, over 200MPG last time I looked.

For once I’d disagree on the pre owned value statement- Iv had a Porsche Cayenne S E hybrid now for 3-4 yrs , purchased pre owned and it’s been a fantastic car , still worth a good value at 60k miles, I’d suggest the bigger issue with Ev and hybrids is insurance companies too willing to write off anything with a battery in the boot , yes I do agree repair costs could be an issue esp on ev batteries etc . Personally I feel better exhaust tech is needed then diesels and petrols would be extended life products

I wouldn’t even say it’s a 10 k risk. It’s more of an inevitability. Will the big battery fail in the first six months or the next four years. Even if you got five years out of it, it’ll be that failing that stops you using the car. And that point it will have absolutely no resale value so you’re 7.5k down .
