Owned my 2006 ep3 for a few months now. 164k miles still runs strong. Average 250 per tank with a lot of motorway driving , 180-200 miles local driving. Fun car which I don’t get bored of unlike most of my previous cars. Not as bad maintenance costs then I expected. Really happy with my purchase

Another common issue I thought I’d mention is the steering rack creaking, especially when accelerating and lightly turning at the same time. I had this happening about a month after I first got mine and it only had 43k miles on the clock. It’s caused by a central slider in the steering rack running out of lubricant. The piece of advice I followed to resolve it was to get a scalpel and cut a tiny slit in the left side of the steering rack gaiter - which is located right at the back of the engine bay near the firewall - then get a can of white lithium grease, put the nozzle through the cut and spray for a good five to ten seconds toward the centre of the steering rack while moving the nozzle around to coat everything. Then work the wheel left and right to full lock, spray the same again and move the wheel again to work it into the rack slider. I did this myself and the noise has gone ever since. Anyway, I’ve daily driven my stock EP3 for 4 years now and genuinely loved every minute of it. Not only has its performance held up surprisingly well against modern cars, but I’ve had all sorts of camping equipment, house moving stuff and even a whole fridge in the back. It’s an amazingly practical car too. Thanks for this great video for anyone looking to buy!

You can fix the seat belt issue by thoroughly cleaning them. Done it in my DC5 and S2K now. Bucket of hot water with woolite or similar and pull seat belt all the way out into the bucket and scrub it then do a rinse bucket too. Even more ideal if you could remove the entire assembly but this method got mine retracting fine.

A tip for the noise is to use a straight section for the mid part, so no "mid muffler", and then use the stock muffler on the end. I bought the car with something akin to the Spoon system, so I just exchanged that big bore muffler to the stock one and left everything else. Then it's sounds like stock on low revs, but as soon as you hit v-tec, it sings wonderfully. Adds to the v-tec experience to be honest. A perfect fit as I use it as a daily driver during the summer. So it must be usable And fun at the same time. Since you need to hit v-tec for it to get loud, hours long highway trips are a breeze now. You can actually use your brain when you arrive at your destination.
@OllyRoss Жыл бұрын
That is a good "hack"! Surely that would effect power output though? I guess it depends on what your priorities are.
@benghazi4216 Жыл бұрын
@@OllyRoss But in reality, how much can it really differ? 5hp? I have never thought of the original muffler as particularity restrictive, so maybe there is literally zero power gains from a straight through muffler on the EP3. The closer to the engine, the more important it is, is the general rule. If you do any trips longer than an hour, I can't recommend this "hack" hard enough. I actually have documented hearing loss in my right ear (LHD EP3) after just two summers. Hours on end in a droning car is just terrible. Worth 5hp easily to skip all that. And it still sings when you want to, driving in tunnels is still great and the V-tec shock you give first time passengers is even larger. If you have the original muffler left, I would really adapt that one so it's just bolts on and off from your Spoon system. It's a fun project, as it's not just exchanging parts but actually making something a little custom. And the more I look at EP3's, the more I think the two pipe muffler ties in better design wise. Just feels more balanced aesthetically.

i've had my ep3 for a year now. 2 owner car before me, completely stock and unmolested. had about 180K miles on the chassis. it's got a K24A in it now and most of my suspension parts are brand new. it's still, even with the Skunk2 Alpha header and Revel cat-back, quiet enough to listen to music at a respectable level or have a conversation without needing to raise your voice. I was never a fan of these when they debuted, but I do love mine now.
@ricardofernandes7303 Жыл бұрын
So fun to see that some of the things mine has are actually very common (like the rear breaks and seatbelts) on the EP3. The gas meter not being very accurate is also a bad thing for me. But on top the bad things is really the seating position and even the steering position. Those two stop you from feeling one with the car. Have no idea why Honda decided to go that route. But overall it will be a car that requires constant maintenance, but a keeper for sure! The pros make it worth it

Nice review, I've had my 53 pre-facelift from new since 2003, and dailyed it every day until 2006; - mpg - with motorway / A-road B-road commute around 300 - 310 miles per tank, even after a Hondata K-Pro full dyno tune on Tesco 99RON, with Toda cams - Insurance - had mine with Adrian Flux (modified, low mileage), no complaints there, highly recommended - Exhaust - also had the Spoon N1 initially with DC sports race header with decat - very loud and drony on the M-Way, but quietens down after 90 mph.! Changed to a Toda Racing exhaust after a couple of years, which was much more liveable - Gear knob - I have a Spoon Sports anodised Titanium - much cooler in summer and warmer in winter than stock - Suspension - Spoon Sport progressive springs (25mm drop) + JDM thicker front/rear ARB's - really dials out any understeer when cornering with the power down - Rust - not an issue with mine, lived 30m from the sea, but had to garage it every night as a condition of the insurance. Moved to Oz in 2007, car followed me out in 2009, so its in a nice warm, dry environment now with no road salt. - Tyres - the original Potenza RE40's (now discontinued), were not good winter tyres (had to pull away in 3rd, and stopping was fun in the snow). I now have Potenza Adrenalin RE003's on mine now in stock size, and they are really good -Oil consumption - variable based on how much VTEC action you perform - as you mention, keep a litre handy at all times. Used to always use Mobil 1 0w-40 fully synth in the UK, back to 5w-40 now I'm in warmer climes Really impressed now with the amount of after market parts and Honda OEM parts available from the likes of Tegiwa Imports etc HTH

I have daylied an EP3 for 8 years now. on coilovers and it is quite harsh but worth the trade-off for ride height and cornering enjoyment. A fast road alignment really increases that. I had a spoon N1 exhaust and after a few years it was too much. I was embarrassed starting it on a morning so went back to standard. Got a double din head unit which was a game changer with android car play. Rear camber arms are a must as the standard ones stretch/bend over time giving negative camber and poor tyre wear and they have no adjustment. Cabin rattles are there but could easily be remedied with some time taking things apart and padding. I have also had calliper seizing issues but no other mechanical issues at all. they do however drink oil as said so good to keep on top of that. And the exhaust does hang low and scrape as said. Good fun practical car though, highly recommend.

Yeah, I initially had a Spoon N1 with a decat race header and lived in a terraced town house with an integral garage on the ground floor. The early starts were a bit too much for my neighbour, especially as the EP3 initially ticks over from cold at 2k rpm to try and warm up faster. Changed it for a Toda Racing exhaust which was much better, but still sounds good under throttle. Rear camber arms - mine came with strange negative rear camber from the factory which prematurely wore out the inside edge of the rear tyres. When tested, Honda said it was within factory limits, so I eventually got adjustable rear camber arms fitted and set up for fast road conditions - problem solved !

The exhaust problem on 7th gen's is indeed a problem when lowered or going for a 3" exhaust... I have a 7th gen civic coupe (em2, same chassis as the ep3 ) , with a fully built n/a k20 , making 281hp... Mine's on kw v2 coilovers and has a custom 3" exhaust, and it scrapes literally everywhere ! The other BIG problem with ep3/rsx/dc5/em2 that you failed to mention , is the electronic power steeringrack. What a piece of garbage design ! The rack its high up against the firewall, with the tierods connecting to the middle part of the rack. So you have these very long tie rods going from the middle of the rack to the suspension knuckle, wich causes all kinds of bumpsteer / tramlining / dead steering feel. Also the slider inside the rack goes bad very quickly , it's a very flimsy rubber slider. When it goes bad (wich it will) , the steering is HORRIBLE ! You immediately have to install de SHG MOTORSPORT steering rack slider. It's a solid delrin piece , grease it very good with high temp. Grease before installing it, and you'll have a car that steers & feels 100 times better ! Even when the oem slider is not worn out yet , do that upgrade ! You wont regret it! The problem with the ep eps-racks was that honda used a below par grease , which caused the rack to dry out quickly, making all kinds of clunking / sqreeching noises, and making the steering really bad ! Sticky steeringwheel , movement on the wheels , bumpsteer etc... I've had my rack refurbished with all the newer materials , shg rackslider , mugen solid rack bushings, and man , it transformed the car in a way i couldnt believe!

4 years ago I had a black premier edition, sold it and now I'm back with a cosmic grey premier edition. I like the mods you've chosen, I want to go down a similar route of oem + Any good garage recommendations to get a performance package / map ? Preferably down south.

I’d you’ve done all the supporting mods go to jcal he’s up london way I believe but he’s the best at mapping a k20 all my mates run his maps I’m yet to get a kpro and map it and I’ll probs download there tune from him

Like a lot of people, you couldn't stay away! Haha! Thanks man, I appreciate that. Hopefully the videos can help with the parts I have used. Depends how south you are really. HondR in Carterton are great for doing work on the car. Jcal or Romain from RaceCal are the most south that I can think of for mapping. Not too clued up on different shops to be honest.

Hey! Great video. How much did you lower the car? I have a stock suspension on my ep3 but scrape a lot as it is with a 70mm exhaust (2,75inch). I measured the lowest point of the exhaust somewhere at the mid rear section of the car and it is about 8cm floor to exhaust and 9-10cm in the front where the cat is. I don't know if I can even clear most of the speed bumps in my area if I drop it any lower.
@OllyRoss Жыл бұрын
Thanks for checking it out. I think the car is 30mm lower. I just let Motion Motorsport set it up how they thought best so I could be wrong. That is surprising to hear that you scrape with standard suspension though.
@jurijdrobnic Жыл бұрын
@@OllyRoss Thx for info! Yeah it sits really low. Maybe it depends on the exhaust pipe routing. My SRS exhaust still has a few mm of clearance between the car and the pipe. Really unlucky they did not put in an exhaust tunnel and it would be fine.

Would you pick this over an FN2 Type R? I’m considering both because the FN2 will be legal for Canadian import next year. I love both for styling, but I wonder based on your experience in the UK, which would be better for reliability?
@OllyRoss Жыл бұрын
Personally, I would choose the EP3 over the FN2 if you want a more raw drivers car. The FN2 has more creature comforts that make it a better daily but the EP3 is more of what I class as a Type R. They are both pretty similar for reliability as the engine is almost identical. Rust is the thing to look out for though!
@momotaroux264 Жыл бұрын
@@OllyRoss Thank you Olly for the insight! Here in Canada, used vehicle prices are insane, seeing how low both EP3s and FN2s are, it's quite tempting to get one now haha. Subbed for such great content!
@sidathwijeratne7168 Жыл бұрын
Both are insanely reliable if they’ve been serviced and maintained properly… however EP3s are more prone to rust, so be mindful of that, especially if ur buying a UK spec one EP3s are lighter and more raw, but FN2s are more comfy for daily driving, whilst still retaining a high revving N/A K20… just depends what u prioritise

My dc2 type r phoenix yellow cost me 11k about 12 years and i thought was alotmwith 89k on it. Now i dont own it because of a horrible driver make sudden left turn and me t boning em .:( miss it everyday but yea u can barely find a dc2 type r for sale in Canada and if u do theyre fetching 5-6 times what i paid. The market has lost its mind. R32’s were 10k nsx 40k and so on bak in high school now 4 5x’s more

Wondering if anyone had any tips/advice for loud/louder ep3s. Got a tegiwa exhaust system fitted. Which isn’t too loud when driving. On cold start it’s fairly loud and I don’t wanna annoy my neighbours early morning or late nights. Before driving it’s obviously important to let the car warm up for 10 minutes. Which is also not ideal. As it means loud noise for longer.

Maybe an exhaust bung? It is the only thing I can think of apart from maybe changing the exhaust to the Solid Fab Super Silent exhaust
@jonctr Жыл бұрын
@@OllyRoss Yes, I had a bung for my Spoon N1, which made it sound like stock even with a decatted race header. I think its too restrictive for serious VTEC action though, and I only ever used it when I had non petrol head friends in the car when going on long journeys with them etc

can u tell me please the paint code ? is this cosmic grey ? cause i see it slightly different and i love this paint job.!!

It is Cosmic Grey. It could be the colour edits I have done to the video that make it look different to Cosmic Grey in person.

I recently bought a 2005 civic si, and I bought a lemon. I love the car and all but this has been one if the biggest waste of money I've ever done and its not even the cars fault. It's my fault for not checking it thoroughly. Costed me 6k and the body is not in good condition, oil leaks, starter went out, it's super jerky so im suspecting it's a bad idle air control valve and has a clunk when you turn the car.
@OllyRoss Жыл бұрын
Ah man! That sounds like such a nightmare!
@HouseOfPetrol Жыл бұрын
Well if the jerking is because of a bad IACV , you should have an irregular idle , if not , it may be that your TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) has gone bad, wich is common on these cars , but an easy and quick fix.. The clunk when you turn (if the car is on stock suspension) is probably the top nut of one of the suspension topmounts thats loose . Check that by opening the hood , and have someone turning the wheel lock to lock and see if the topnut on the suspension top moves/jumps place. It could also be the slider in the steering rack that's gone bad , check for play on the part where the tierods join together. IF thats bad , replace the oem slider with the shg motorsport delrin one. Grtz
