The thing is GM saw some of what was going on but was biased. It wasn't just that she was trusting of Lianfang. She thought Shiyi must be deserving of whatever treatment she received after plotting with her sister (which of course we know she didn't do). It was maddening how long it took her to open up to Shiyi and everything she allowed to happen. But the show needed an in-house villain getting in the way.

@@hpr2008 well the GM's behavior facilitated the treatment that Shiyi received from Lianfang and the servants....giving Lianfang the responsibilities of the legal wife was her way of getting back at Shiyi for Yuanniang's scheme. She went as far as to tell Shiyi that she had to get along with Lianfang...as if she was the legal wife. The servants took their cues from the GM and Lianfang....in the end it blew up in their faces and they feared that Shiyi would get even with them. Lingyi always wanted Shiyi to take over the duties of the matron because it was rightfully hers...but the GM had other plans. It's true her biases played a major part in how she treated Shiyi....so it didn't matter how many times Shiyi saved the Xu family...she was always going to treat her indifferently...It took Shiyi willingness to die for the Xu family that she finally changed her mind about her.
