I have watched this scene numerous times and just now figured out the emperor's only reason for coming to see Ruyi was to remind her of her Empress duties. No words of love just a not so subtle command to resume her watch over the harem. I think it was at that point Ruyi's last ounce of love was gone and she burned the portrait to show she was done.

I recently heard that in the book after ling dies her female servant was allowed to leave the palace. Not sure about the man servant.
