First the mother sells her into a marriage she doesn't want, then slaps her when she tells the truth about the mother living vicariously through her for all the mother's failed accomplishments in her own life, now that the daughter has finally taken a stand for herself and her future at age 29, the mother's pity party still doesn't end but now she resorts to emotional blackmail. This mother is beyond toxic and the husband needs to grow a spine and take a stand for his daughter and his son: something he's obviously never done as the mother bulldozes over all of them constantly. He even tells the daughter the mother is bad tempered so he has to be tolerant, but I don't think he understands the word 'tolerant'; by being tolerant of her bad temper and overbearing discipline, even of her adult children, he's not being 'tolerant', he's being an enabler of her toxic, destructive behavior in the family unit. Even as the daughter doesn't flinch during the emotional blackmail about nursing her as a baby, raising her, paying for her education...isn't that what parents do? Feed their children? Send them to school? Financially support them so they can grow up and eventually financially support themselves? And isn't this what the daughter is finally insisting on doing? Being independent, supporting herself? This mother's toxicity has toxicity. And the weak, intimidated father stands there watching his daughter pack to leave and just observes: doesn't speak, doesn't move the mother out of the room so he and his daughter can talk, doesn't say or do a thing, even after she closes the door behind her. Only then does he spring into action: too little, too late. And the mother - the pity party continues as she sits on the bed feeling sorry for herself because she didn't just lose her daughter, she lost her puppet and her always available victim. If the son has any sense, he'll get the heck out of there next and right quick. Even as he sat next to his mother on the bed and tried to console her and assure her his sister would return when she's not so emotional, the mother never leaned into him, never leaned toward the hug he was trying to give her. The woman is cold, distant and emotionally disconnected from her family: she only concerns herself with her own feelings. How pathetic. A mother like that doesn't change: she just regroups and refocuses on her next victim. Good golly, the mere idea of her having grandchildren is chilling.

That was bullsh!t. That engagement party was for herself and saving her face as they call it in China. To me the mom is embarrassed the Cheng Huan at the age of 29 is still not married. I know that she loves her daughter dearly but she goes way way to far in all of the things she "does for Cheng Huan". Mom is self-deluding herself when it comes to Cheng Huan.
