I'm glad I found this vid. As an international fan, it puts a lot into perspective. My first Chinese BL adaptation was Guardian and while it wasn't perfect, there's no denying the chemistry between the main leads. The plot might have dragged in some parts, and the sets and effects were rather gimmicky, but as far as their storyline was concerned, the actors, writers and directors were successful. I just finished The Untamed/CQL, knowing in advance that it was going to be censored, but I was still blown away by how the crew managed to work around the censorship issue and still portray a love story(they can keep calling it bromance all they want, it's a love story!). I think what helped, apart from XZ and WYB's amazing chemistry and powerful acting, is having the other characters canonically and consistently acknowledge their relationship and how much they meant to each other. And all of the actors seemed to understand their characters because even aside from the main pair, there were so many side pairings that had me raising a brow. Seriously with the exception of Wen Ning, Jin Zixuan and Jiang Cheng, all of the male characters had noticeably questionable chemistry with other male characters. I'm really glad that they didn't force the Wen Qing/Wuxian thing. It felt like she had feelings for him but it was fine once it remained one-sided. If he'd reciprocated, that would've thrown off his entire relationship with Lan Zhan. Thank goodness the fans rose and made their voices heard.

Oh yeah, i remember that the untamed dir received juggernaut backlash from MDZS fandom back then bc he wanna to improvise the plot making it heterosexual pairing wenqing/wuxian due to ban of lgbt in china. I almost dropped the untamed due to the ridiculous pairing. Luckily they listened to fans and made a right u turn. Kudos to the dir.

Agree, though I would have paired WX with Shije, hahahaha I don't know why but I think even Madam Yu had times where she thought Wei had feelings towards his sister. This is hinted on during the hunting activity by peacock's mother. WQ started to fall when Wei cared so much for her brother, it was clear she harboured feelings for Wei and am glad at stopped in her mind.

I haven't watched Guardian yet, but there are ample reasons why The Untamed became such a huge hit and resonated with so many fans around the world compared to other BL adapted dramas: 1) The chemistry between the two male leads is simply outstanding. Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo just seem to feed off of each other's energy and they're very natural around one another. 2) The characters in the show felt three dimensional as a result of strong character arcs. I laud the writers for giving equal attention to the development of other characters instead of solely focusing on Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian. 3) Character relationships were extremely well done. This is an element I felt The Untamed particularly excelled in. I love that the relationship between Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji, though central to the story, was surrounded by other important relationships. Namely the relationships between Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng, Lan Xichen and Jin Guangyao, Wei Wuxian and Jiang Yanli, and the Yi City Arc triangle between Song Lan, Xiao Xingchen, and Xue Yang. 4) The soundtrack is composed in a way that each track fits the ambience of any given scene so perfectly. If anyone wants an example, the soundtrack is available on Spotify! 5) The cinematography is absolutely breathtaking, especially when basking in the sceneries of the Cloud Recesses and Lotus Pier. 6) The show did its best to respect the source material. Like the uploader mentioned, The Untamed was largely faithful to the novel and IMO, even improvised some scenes that elevated elements of the story. 7) Speaking of elevating elements of the story, my favorite aspect of the show is its portrayal of Wangxian. Because of Chinese censorship of homosexual content, it's understandable that their romance couldn't be made explicit. Ironically, however, it's precisely the censorship that made Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian's love feel wholesome and powerful. It's the highest form of love that can only exist in an ideal world.

去年追的是镇魂今年追的是陈情令 两部都很好 但要是说整体的话 陈情令比较好😅了因为剧情很好很贴原著！镇魂真的是靠两个男主演技 但我个人比较偏向陈情令因为太甜了！ 以为不能拍的场面全拍了😭😭 然后真人肖战和一博关系也很好（说的是朋友关系🤣） 两人太搞笑了整天怼来怼去 而且颜值太高 尤其是肖战！真的是无死角 他们两个都非演员科班出生但演技真的很棒 肖战的哭戏简直让我心碎

Lots of great points made, and I love your examples of good bl (Chen Qing Ling, Zhen Hun, and S.C.I have grown into some of my favourite shows). ♥️ I’m really glad The Untamed went the way it did and that they listened to the fans by getting rid of the female lead. Everyone expected it to be terrible, but I’m glad it ended up proving us wrong. And now we have an amazing drama that sometimes feels even gayer than the original novel haha. The actors also all have such great chemistry; Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo especially, and it really brings me back to the good ol’ days when I got to see Zhu Yilong and Bai Yu together also having good chemistry. ^^

1. Guardian is my first chinese bromance drama i ever watched. And until now the ending little iritating for me.(bc they should have happy ending) 2. S.C.I mystery is good series but sadly they change some character's gender. But lucky the chemistry between Dr. Zhan and bai sir was amazing and we can see them kiss (although it's just CPR but who cares as long as their lips meet i still count that as kiss). 3. Untamed was just perfect

Thank you so much for providing English subtitle for this video. Totally agree with you on the female lead in the bl adaptation drama. I'd rather have more Shijie's scenes than Wen Qing's because Wen Qing's appearance at the early episodes didn't add anything meaningful to the story. And I love Wen Qing character in the novel, she's a badass genius doctor. Too bad, the actress in CQL didn't do justice to her character. They should've chosen an actress with strong personality.

Shijie was more badass than WQ in the drama ! That acting was sooo OOC for WQ character, i would not recognize her as WQ if she was not WN's sister. I was not even sad when she died. Such a letdown 😔😔😔. On a happier note, I never thought i could love shijie more but Xuan Lu proved me wrong. Her death was more devastating for me that i start to tear up everytime i watch a scene of her😭😭😭😭😭.

@@AJAAlquie21 I hear ya! I cried when Shijie died. It was soooo devastating! I totally could relate to the yunmeng boys on that. Xuan Lu's acting surprised me even since the scene where JYL confronted WY at Qinghe when he was angry at LZ becuz he thought LZ told her abt the practise of demonic cultivation. That's what a big sister must do. And then when she fiercely defended WY in front of Jin Zixun at hunting competition in Lanling. As opposed to the other female actress who'd successfully made WQ look like a deflated balloon (while she was supposed to have a strong, no-nonsense personality and smart with jabs). And yes, I didn't feel the emotion when she sacrified herself (Yubin's acting is more convincing). With how close her face was when WQ said goodbye to WY, I was constantly worried she would end up kissing him! 😂 (THANK GOD she didn't).

It seems like they deleted all the scenes with Wen Qing that were going to be romantic with Wei Wuxian (which I'm very glad) but didn't delete many of the other irrelevant scenes she was in. Most of her presence seemed like filler and not relevant... she was always there whenever Wei Wuxian was on screen even if not doing nothing. I know she's a good person, but I was annoyed that she kept showing up despite not adding anything relevant after the 1 or 2 episodes she served her purpose. (sorry for the rant lol)

魔道祖师是我入墨香铜臭坑追的第一本小说，一直都是心头爱，看完了陈情令，真觉得是非常非常非常符合原作，主要是选角非常非常非常完美（不是在夸张），除了某孟女士，其他的演员都找对了感觉。平常的剧是剧火主角火，陈情令是火了全剧组。
