Wen is almost only concubine who had changed her evil scheming ways in the end. Wen has finally understood and respected Shiyi who has always understood suffering of concubine through her own mother and as concubine's daughter. This could had been wonderfully close friendship if concubine Wen had not been envy in jealousy , if she had understanding that Marquis couldn't force affections that he didn't have to give as man who can only love one woman who happened to be Shiyi and close minded towards Shiyi who has always been more open minded and kind towards people even when she was done wrong. Shiyi has given Wen new beginning between themselves in future family interactions for family friendship that hopefully Wen will accept for herself and Yu.

I find that with Concubine Wen, it's not just a question of affection, it's also about meeting the Wen family's bottom line. Throughout the series, Concubine Wen seemed like she was tasked in securing financial support from the Xu family for the Wen family. Being part of a harem is not just a marriage, it's also a job, how well you perform as a concubine affects how well you are compensated. As the daughter of a merchant family, Concubine Wen has probably been taught to view everything from a financial standpoint, but women during that day and age had very little freedom. She could conduct backdoor business deals like she tried to Shiyi, and asking the Marquis directly would have been a difficult task because his communication skills with the women in his harem seem to be lacking. During the first time we see Lingyi entering Concubine Wen's room, he's turned off by how she lists the price of a single bowl of soup. He dismissed her by saying that he had to work, but he could have expressed his guilt and concern for the refugee situation like he did with Yuanniang when he refused a second title of nobility or complimented her head for understanding prices and politely tried to steer the conversation in a different direction. Wen entered the harem as the result of a business transaction, I imagine that is how she evaluates her worth as a woman. She relies heavily on the support of the Wen family because the Xu family seem indifferent to her position and as a woman there is very little she can do outside the household without support. On top of that, Lingyi didn't exactly have a high opinion of women to begin with. When he was discussing the refugee system with Shiyi, he praised her for her wit but also commented that she could have accomplished great things "if she was a man". However, when he found out about Shiyi's sideline at the Xian Ling Pavilion, he thought it was inappropriate for a woman to display herself in such a public manner and only ended up supporting her because their interests align. In terms of their ability to conduct business, Shiyi and Concubine Wen don't seem that different, but while Shiyi has made efforts to be as independent as possible in her dealings, Concubine Wen's methods require a measure of support.

The concubine got off way too lightly for her crime. She would have destroyed the family had it not been for Shiyi and the Marquis planning and preparing for what eventually happened. The scene with Erniang was pretty funny.
