Biosimilars are a type of medication used to treat a range of conditions-like chronic skin and bowel diseases, arthritis, diabetes, kidney conditions, macular degeneration, and some cancers. Just like brand-name drugs have generic versions, original biologics can have biosimilars. Biosimilars are like identical twins-they are not an exact copy of one another. Both a biosimilar and its original biologic are made from the same types of sources (e.g., living sources), provide the same benefits when treating diseases or medical conditions, are given at the same strength and dosage, and are not expected to cause new or worsening side effects.
