Some dangerous stuff especially if you strike perfectly with your heel. The dragon whips his tail.

I notice that you make no attempt to look at a potential target behind you with your head facing forward at the point of impact , what I am finding is that young students in my local club ( I retired over 30 years ago) do this also and end up with their arms hanging down and the impact point all over the place. If they try to look behind them for a potential attacker then the kick turns into a turning side kick rather than back kick.

I am just knew to lean martial arts once in a week during my off days. 2 hours per session in a week. Watching techniques helps a lot for me to practice by myself during night time if I'm free from work. I consider my exercise before going to sleep. Thank you for your channel. It's been a month of learning so I can do some movements that can high my white belt to the next level. It's my dream come true.

Great tutorial. Wondering if you have any tips or what modifications are required to fully step back after the kick when starting from zenkutsu-dachi or fighting stance? (stepping back the kicking leg behind the front leg, to the same side/without fully spinning around like would be done in ushiro mawashi geri) Sending my bodyweight forward past the front leg while kicking makes it very difficult to pull the leg back to its original pre-kick position, unless i slow down the movement drastically. Thank you!

Thanks a lot Seamus 'O Dowd! First of all for your fantastic and inspiring book "A Karate Story" (I highly recommend to enjoy it to everybody out there!) and second, for this tutorial. I struggled a long time with Ushiro-Geri till this and some other videos teached me to first turn (full), look and kick then 🥋

So many people lack power, because they’re actually doing the spinning side kick ☝️ Master and practice and understand the differences between a back kick vs a side kick. A back kick is not a side kick ☝️ Joe Rogan and etc, even his back kicks are actually side kicks 🤷

front leg should not go so up .. not higher then belt ... why ? omg everyone do this different way .. in some videos here on youtube persons kicks twisted like not with kakakto on top and koshi down but joko geri this one have starting with so high knee ... why ? It should be high like mae geri and actualy you first do kick to your butt thats starting then rise knee then look back to enemy and kick with kakato ... i am looking how to do it as someone who want to learn it and everyone do this different way ( its probably problem which karate is it .. there is actualy 16 different karate styles ... like gojuryu , shotokan etc etc ... )

Not bad, but your knees must always be closer together in order to to stay connected. Thereby generating more power.

As I was trying the kick I rotated my head to see the target and after I kicked my toes were at about 45 degrees angle. What do you suggest that I do?

sometimes keeping the head looking at the opponent - without turning the head - is extremely effective - trust me! Especially if the opponent goes to the left side of your guard (the assumption is that you are in the left guard)

I don't totally understand the benefit of bringing the knee back in front of you. It certainly looks nicer, but is there a technical reason?

When you kick, you want to remain in control of what you do next, rather than just falling forward or letting the leg fall down. A way to test that you are in control after the kick is to be able to execute the same kick again without dropping the foot to the floor. Or execute a different kick, or multiple kicks. This shows that you remain in control and can choose which direction you will go next, or what technique you will do next, AFTER you kick.

This tutorial is pretty helpful for me. I study Mantis Kung fu atm and we have the same kick as Ushiro geri that I am having difficulty performing because as a teen I did Tae Kwon Do and what I was taught looked more like a spinning Yoko geri. So it's been hard switching between the two for me because my body has been conditioned longer to do the later.

Agree with another poster below, I was taught to turn your head to see your target before executing the kick, enabling you to make adjustments to their movement. Would be nice if attackers stayed motionless. :)

Of course some people teach turning the head to watch the kick. My preference is to not turn the head because more often than not it leads people to over rotate and end up doing a side kick instead of a back kick. But you are more than welcome to do it differently to how I teach it.
