I took mine to the car wash and used Dawn on it. Then I used the shop vac. Came out like new and took 24 hours to dry hanging over the top of my car.

@@sjaxemaster11 Mom gave me Grandmother's 4' x 6' rug. $30,000.00, She didn't know what it was, I checked. A silk tree of life. Be careful kiddies. You hand over an original to be cleaned, get a copy back & never know. Rug is HEAVY!!! WET. Break the fibers on a thin wire CLOTHS LINE. Tork, twist, & out of square, cotton, wool & silk rugs. Throw that favorite silk or wool blouse, scarf, or sweater in your washer & see what happens... I've seen Oriental silk rugs laid out on a trampoline, in the shade, summer time, with a soft falling sprinkler head rinsing. Sand falls through, can get it flat & squared BEFORE ITS DRY. Has to dry pretty flat, over a smooth top rail on a fence, wide enough car or trailer, or slanted to drain & NOT wrinkles OR bumps stretching or snap fibers. Had a lecture from an Arab Woman about how they dye the fibers for these old rugs. Scared the crap out of me. They wanted full insurance for appraisal value before cleaning. Well you know, I thought Grandma's Rug looked pretty damn good, & decided to wait for that cleaning.

I know this is comment is a couple of years after this video, but i kind of did this by laying the rug on clean concrete drive, scrubbing with a clean push broom, then rinsed after laying on wooden pallets. I then laid it over the rails to drain, used wet dry vac, then hung it again to dry. I did this on a very hot day, and it was dry within hours. It looked great. Just a teen bit of backing came off around the edge. It wasn't a very expensive rug, and still better than dirty!

I've found, at home when I do this myself, a power washer is amazing! The gross animal stains that came out was gross and awesome. I even had mine professionally cleaned and it was still dirty. I also use a homemade solution with oxiclean and other safe ingredients. Works great. Just took a day of my time. So worth it!!

Lizzy Hale (I know this comment is old I'm gonna reply anyway) the act of flushing a toilet to get rid of waste is something that is actually a necessity. We cant live in our urine and feces. Washing a rug is almost useless and only for aesthetics unless you have children who are rolling around putting their faces in the rug

High Lady Juno I clean my couch because im actually laying on it and stuff but again, I'm not rolling around on my carpet so it's not really a necessity. If I ever have kids I will definitely clean my carpets. but as of now nothing more than those vacuums that steam your carpet is used every once in awhile at my house.

This method of cleaning rugs can damage your rug... Please do not let anyone use a side by side machine to scrub the backing of your rugs... This can cause tip blooming and damage your fibers.. The only way to truly clean the rug is to move 80 gallons of water through the rug consistently.

I wear deck shoes when cleaning carpets, the soles don't hold dirt, as long as you wipe your feet on a clean towel at the door. I assume his tennis shoes are similar.

For ppl complaining about wasting water. You waster water when you shower daily for more than 5 minutes. You waste water brushing teeth, washing clothes, washing dishes, washing cars. You'd be surprised how wasteful a lot of things are when it comes to water. This rug more likely than not hasn't been cleaned in years and won't be cleaned for another few years.

Usually, if I ever clean the rugs in my house ill take them outside lay them down in the driveway and with my push broom after spraying The head of the broom down with water just so its damp ill go over the rug and try to pull the animal fur and other loose dirt out of it. Ill then with a mix of vinegar and dawn dish soap coat the run and cover in hot water so my cleaners can work their magic sit for about 5 minutes after ill scrub it down then rinse it out then take a squeegee to it see if I can work any dirt out of it then repeat the whole process untill my water runs clean and my rugs no longer look or smells dirty. Hang them up to dry on an whatever I can find to elevate them so gravity can do its thing and within a few days I can bring them inside good as new. Powdered carpet freshener help If any kind of smells remain. Eventually ill need to go out and pick up some new rugs can only get away with cleaning them so many times

Any homeowner with a little common sense could do this in your backyard or driveway. Not hard to do. If you hang it over a pole and rinse it you will do a much better job as the water flows from top to bottom.
