I often note during my videos that I'm trowing my thread on the bobbin cradle. It struck me that with the macro lens when filming the fly tying, anyone watching may have no idea what I am talking about - because you can't see it on the screen.
This video is intended to be a demonstration of what a bobbin cradle is, how you use it, and why you use it. Nearly any time I'm winding a material around the shank of the hook, I'll use the cradle. You will see how quick and easy it is to move into place.
Sometimes I use it just to get the thread out of the way. Other times I'll turn to it when I'm using the rotating feature on a vise. For me, I will generally throw in a quick half-hitch knot (again, takes one second) which just helps keep your thread from winding or unwinding as you rotate your vise.
Hope this is helpful!
