I bought a GI bivy sack and put my Klymit Static V blow up pad and sleeping bag in it. The bivy sack keeps everything together, keeps things dry, adds a bit of warmth, but still breaths. Camping at 11,800' in elevation in a hammock between two trees in a lightening storm is a formula for a lightning conductivity test, not anywhere I wanted to be. Grabbing the bivy with everything in it. I ran out to an open field away from trees. tossed the bivy down, a few extra puffs of air into the pad and I had quickly moved my sleeping arrangements to someplace safer. Needless to say, I'm all about the bivy sack now. My wife and two daughters each got a bivy sack from Santa last Christmas.

Double layer along with bridge hammock is way to go your air mattress doesn’t slip. A lot of lightweight backpackers using reflex basically silver Mylar light 1/4 roofing padding it reflects your heat back up to your body. It is relatively cheap and easy packing. You could line your hammock then with light weight survival blanket if you needed to.
@shugemery4 жыл бұрын
Righto. It does get some condensation though. That is why I went underquilt and never looked back.
@darylstahl63604 жыл бұрын
shugemery I agree with underquilt for the hammock ....it’s definitely a must. I found a cheap one at REI that was like $60 on sale. And with the double layer I can slide sleep pad separate pocket. So far haven’t slept out in below 40 degree weather yet. Will let you know how cold l can go, I was planning on trying some cold weather hammocking over year in PA, but we only get to like 20 degree nites.....not like your minus 20 over there where you are. Do you have any videos on how to choose where to hang your hammock? Like behind a hill, or next to fir trees for wind break, or in winter hang hammock close to ground...less space like 2ft off ground less wind or air under you....I know that is a little exgerated. Liked your last video I seen -20 wearing multi layers and baklava. Keep up good work and hang in there.

First hammock trip and I use my Exped Synmat LW. I was completely miserable most of the night. The hammock edge kept working its way under the pad almost to my knees. Almost dumped me a couple of times when I pushed down on my heels to adjust. My back also got pretty cold for most of the night. The Exped is rated to 27 deg and I think the temps were in the mid to upper 30s. Also felt like I was fighting the pad all night. Going to sideline the hammock for now until I can get an under quilt.
@shugemery9 жыл бұрын
+2006Whippet UQs rule for sure. Sound like a short hammock. Those pads lose some rating in a hammock as they are not on the ground. I feel you may lose 10º or so.
@2006Whippet9 жыл бұрын
+shugemery It's an 11 foot hammock but, I'm also 6'5. That might have something to do with it. I pretty much guessed I wasn't going to get the full temp rating in a hammock.
@livinlarge12478 жыл бұрын
So far I'm a big fan of the insulated blow up pad's versatility. If on your expedition you wake up on somebody's floor covered with cans & pizza boxes, your trusty pad is underneath you so well you dreampt you were in a great palace. I also like how the pad pushes the fabric of the hammock a bit from pinching right against your arms. Want to stay on the beach or underneath a neat spruce roof--no problem--pitch out your buddy the pad & get a different position from all the nights in the hammock. I've paddled clear across lakes on my trusty Klymit. I just consider the dang pad so versatile I can't get rid of it. The Achilles Heel on mine (R4.4) is anything below 20F is downright cold. So even though I could get an underquilt, my solution has recently been to spend my few dollars on the supposedly awesome Exped Downmat (R8). I think its mummy shape will keep the pad mostly inflated under my back, as opposed to how the air can rush to the head & foot end of a square pad. We'll see how it goes. For real, real cold I still carry a couple small wings of solid foam about the size to stuff in my pack for my arms. Great video: I'm thinking of making a wing thing for my pad, something that helps absorb sweat & add a touch of warmth & comfort to my nylon home in the bushes.

Dunno if you read comments on a seven-year-old video, but here goes. Just wondered if you ever tried a lightweight mostly wool pad between the layers of a two-layer hammock -- either a 3# wool military blanket or a 1/8" felt pad with high wool content. Presumably, either would be breathable (less potential condensation), would have good thermal properties and, if it's a blanket, in an emergency it could function as a wraparound.

I have a claytor jungle hammock with the pad sleeve in the bottom. When it's cool I use one of my big agnes insulated pads and either slide it in the pocket or just use it in my big agnes lost ranger. It works best just using the pad inside the bag as it is always under you that way. I side sleep 90% of the time and I still tent camp sometimes but always feel like crap in the morning. When I sleep in the hammock I feel so much more rested. The reason I tent camp still is because I motorcycle camp most of the time so I am never 100% sure there will be suitable trees for the hammock, I need to get comfortable tarp camping so that I can just use the tarp if there aren't trees around.

3m velcro and a sheet of foil backed thin fleece blanket the stuff you can buy in matt sized pieces for picnics, in between the double layered like the DD Frontline, works a treat, and doesn't move. The only downside is, you might have to buy a larger stuff sack to fit it in, unless you don't mind taking it in and out every time you set up, and pack up.

Great video, as per usual - thank you. I am a great proponent of CCF. Maybe the most versatile piece of camping/hammocking equipment available. For those (like me) on a very restricted budget, they cost $10or less. They are 100% effective as insulation, so you won;t die of hypothermia. Also wind proof. can use as a sit or kneel pad in camp. Can use them if there are no trees andyou are forced to sleep on the ground. At a river in spate, they will be a PFD. did I mention: less than $10. How many of thesecan you achieve with a $200 quilt?

sleeping pads are much cheaper then a quilt but boy they suck. they always move around and it ends up on top of you. im still in the market for a quilt myself.
@billcampbell98869 жыл бұрын
+Adam Craig - I use a Therm-A-Rest, RidgeRest (20"x48") sleeping pad and a DIY Poncho Liner under quilt. The DIY under quilt took about 20 minutes to put together, required no sewing, and only cost about $35.00 for materials (search Google Images for: "No Sew Poncho Liner Under Quilt" for materials list and instructions). I also use an inexpensive Ozark Trail Cocoon 250 (Wal-Mart brand) 32 degree duck down sleeping bag that I use as a top quilt, a Kelty Noah's Tarp for a shelter and wind break, and I sleep in fleece sweat pants a sweat shirt and wool sox. I have slept comfortably at 17 degrees with this kit.

Hey Shug! Found these via Hammock Forums, just wanted to say thanks man for taking the time to make the videos - very entertaining as well as useful - you're a 'sound man' as we say here in Ireland. Looking forward to my first hammock camp!! Keep on keepin' on.

Great video. I use a car windshield reflector, but it slides around like crazy. Something to widen it at the shoulders and stop it from slipping would make things easier. Great video. Love your energy. Subbed.

Good job as usual. I started with hammocks in '99. Used a Ridgerest for years before I even heard of an under quilt. I trimmed the corners at an angle so it would fit better in the hammock(Hennessey). Thanks so much for all you time and effort putting these videos together.

Thanks for the video, Shug. No underquilt for me yet so I have experimented with Reflectix and also my Thermarest inflatable pad. I'm still working the bugs out and your video was helpful. By the way, it's good to see that no Shugs were hurt during the filming of that ladder dismount. ;)
