So helpful and timely. I have a bunch of messy batts of Polwarth and was dreading the spinning. Now i know just what to do. Thanks so much.

Thanks very much for this video! Your method is easy to understand and your suggestions for what else you can use as a diz gave me the idea to use a knitting needle gauge that I have which is in thicker plastic - it works like a charm! I just dizzed two bats in no time.

The volume didn't matter because the visuals were so clear. I had no idea what a diz is or what it's for. Now I'm going to improvise one to work with a roving that wouldn't draft and I thought it was something I was doing wrong. Maybe not! Thanks.

probably a daft question, but what sort of size are those holes? I'm thinking my knitting needle measure might well work for this...
@TheSpinningSara
@TheSpinningSara 4 жыл бұрын
yes, a needle measure would work well, as long as the holes don't have any Barb's or spots that are rough to catch the fiber.

Thanks for another excellent video. I’m fairly new at spinning. Have you ever spun a bat short draw worsted style. I know bats are best for woolen spinning, I’m just wondering what happens when you spin them worsted
@kathleenkline4622
@kathleenkline4622 4 жыл бұрын
When you spin any fiber prep worsted, you push the air out as you allow the twist into the fiber supply. It makes a smoother yarn. Think of it this way..woolen=lighter, fluffier, airy yarn, worsted= smoother, denser less airy yarn.
@TheSpinningSara
@TheSpinningSara 4 жыл бұрын
When you spin a short draw yarn with a batt you are producing a yarn that is fluffier and lighter than a normal worsted yarn. It creates a denser, less fuzzy, less warm yarn that is harder wearing.

I also notice you are rotating your drafting (pulling) hand by 90 degrees with each pull. I saw this same technique by another fiber artist.

If you had a blend which contained some shorter fibres, would you end up with a handful of the short fibres at the end?
@TheSpinningSara
@TheSpinningSara 2 жыл бұрын
Not usually. Because you are pushing the diz down to the fibers before drafting again you will usually grab long and short fibers together.

I don't know if this will help anyone, but i figured out about half way through trying this that when you get those unruly pieces, it helps me to turn the entire thing so the unruly part is on top. Trying to do it from the side was harder for me. Also, the only thing i had on hand to try this was a 🔑. Seems to be working.

Good idea. Turning the fiber over would help a lot. It is all about how and where in your fiber supply you are drafting from. Smart thinking on the key!!

Is "pin drafted roving" already dizzed fiber? And is dizzing a good way to prep a braid that has felting issues?
@TheSpinningSara
@TheSpinningSara 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Vicky! Pin-drafted roving is a thin carded prep of fiber. It is done by a commercial machine and allows you to spin a woolen yarn without any prep. Being pin-drafted simply means it is a thinner, often longer length of fiber, rather than roving which is more thick and dense. You can certainly diz a compacted/slightly felted braid. It will be harder to diz but doable. You may find some braids can only be rescued by a drumcarder or a blending board though.

I am fairly new to spinning and just learning to drop spindle via utube. Could you suggest where you would recommend buying fiber/ roving from for beginner and just pretty and good pricing. So many places and very overwhelming to me.

I've only been spinning a little less than a year, however, all my faves so far have come from shops on Etsy. I just pick a color I want and search with Roving top. I will say my faves so far are Greenwood Farms, Jakira, CarrParkArtisan, and ThreeWaters Farm

It is not. Pencil roving is machine made. This is taking a handcarded batt and predrafting it to make it easier for me to spin. HTH

What is the purpose of the diz? Meaning, what does it add that you couldn't do by just pulling and reaching up and pulling again? :)
@TheSpinningSara
@TheSpinningSara 2 жыл бұрын
Sometimes fibers are denser than you’d like to spin directly from. Sometimes the fibers are compacted or semi felted and that will make it hard to draft consistently. Dizzing will allow air to re-enter the fibers giving you a loftier yarn and one that was much easier to spin. Similar to stripping a braid down into smaller chunks or predrafting a braid, dizzing makes fibers thinner and easier to spin. HTH!

@@TheSpinningSara Thank you. But my point was, couldn't you do it without the diz. What does the diz add that predrafting doesn't do? :)
