Thank you! I have considered getting into official training of some sort, but still figuring out how to go about it. I looked into teaching at trade schools and that doesn't look good to me. So many of them are more concerned with making money than teaching a quality education. So I'll just keep making more videos for you guys for now!

@@JerseyMikeHVACBrother you could make your own HVAC school. I worked HVAC as an apprentice and I wasn't taught anything. I barely learned even after 100 installs because the workers above me barely knew or cared to teach me. And most other KZbin channels here about HVAC are a waste of time. But seriously consider making your own in person meet ups for HVAC minded folks that want to learn more about the field. You'll definitely make friends along the way, that's for sure.

26:34 - Performing the hot surface igniter voltage test in this manner could hide another reason for furnace recycling. Even if you read 120v between the black conductor and ground, a broken neutral from the board to here will not allow a complete circuit to the igniter (just sayin’). Excellent presentation. I particularly like the schematic/diagram shown side by side with the actual wiring!

My OCD kicked in big time. Another thing that complicates the troubleshooting process is that the whole wiring harness looks like a rat's nest. I guess they want to save money on a couple of inches of wire. I love the ladder diagrams also; those are less of a rat's nest. 40+ years as a panel builder and I have never built anything that looks like that. All my panel wires come back to a central terminal strip. Troubleshooting is as simple as checking for voltages on the terminal strip. When you lose voltage, it tells you what component is bad or is blocking the function. Still waiting for a terminal strip with onboard LED lights so that troubleshooting is as simple as looking at the terminal strip. I know that you did not build it, and I love your videos.
@JerseyMikeHVACАй бұрын
What got me on this one is the fact the unit is only 3 years old and the installers decided to power it splicing off of a K&T circuit from 1913 with a modern panel (available when the unit was installed) only 10 feet away. Guess everyone is trying to save a little on wire.

Around 15 minutes into the video you disengage (pull the wire) on the high/ low limit switch. At what point does the control board detect a malfunction where as to to shut down the blower motor and systems? It appeared to stay running. Also in Philadelphia many homes have 14 wire with no ground; outlets,switches etc. not grounded. How would test power to ground in this scenario?
@JerseyMikeHVAC2 ай бұрын
Blower stays running for a minute or so on those limits. Everything else shuts down. The idea is to cool off the heat exchanger. Is the 14-2 the old cloth wire in metal similar to BX? There is a thin silver wire in that stuff easy to miss that acts as a ground but isn't hooked up like a wire. But at any rate, if it's in metal the metal itself is grounded back to the panel in most cases. If not, you still will get a reading, but it may not be accurate. That was the issue in this video when I was only reading 43 volts off the HSI. Old knob & tube wiring with no ground. Another ground option could be a nearby water line or a gas line.

Jot down the model numbers of the units and find the manuals online. Read through them and especially study the wiring diagrams. If there is anything you're stuck on or can't figure out, ask the techs. That's better than any book.
