Thanks, I've been wondering how to use larger spools on a "regular" sewing machine. (and thanks to whomever asked the question too!)

I noticed you pulled the small spool off backwards. I was taught to never ever do that, clip it and pull from needle area.

Thanks so much! I also just bought the larger spools (which I haven’t used yet) and I did not know about the top guide on my 770! Learn something new everyday!😊

What perfect timing. I just got a spool holder and my Bernina 440 QE also has the guide on the top but before this video I would not known that's what it was. thanks so much for the good info.

I made two large spool guides. One was a toilet roll holder made to stand on the floor. It is heavy wrought iron. The spool sits inside the bottom circle shape and the thread goes up, in and out of the little loop, and into the thread guide on my vintage Bernina 830 Record.

Thanks for explaining that Irene. I will have to check my machine to see if it has that thread loop thing on it ❤

I use a 8 inch nail hammered through a piece if wood to hold the cone. Then i bent a long piece of galvanised wire to the hook shape. Works a treat.

Hi Irene and thank you very much for this easy to watch demonstration 🎉.I have a Singer Legacy and it has a lid you have to use so loading the machine might be different but you have answered my question very well. Thanks you Hugs. Wendy XXXX

I learned about this by trial and error after buying a large cone spool like yours for doing guy projects. I'm a guy who makes my own gear and need to get into clothing eventually. So far it's been just tailoring my own but not making from patterns. Anyhow, I like your spool holder and hanger. It looks a lot like mine. I had problems with the thread hanging up on the big cone until I figured out that I needed to make that simple accessory. I wish fixing Berninas was as simple. I am impressed with the fine craftsmanship though. Have a great day . ☕😎👍🧵🪡

Most machines have instructions in the manual for how to use an external spool holder. Usually there is a secondary thread guide somewhere near the primary spool holder, as on Irene's machine. If your spool is usually under a closable lid (like on my babylock) you might have to leave the lid open for sewing with an external spool holder.

I've been having tension problems for months, MONTHS! Because a bought a spool for a serger. I used the glass jar hack, where you put your large spool in a jar so the threads feeds from up top. I found out that the thread is still catching onto the side of the spool, because I was feeding to my machine on an angle, and it's introducing this momentary tension every time the thread goes around the spool. So yeah, I'm an idiot for buying large spools for my home machine. The moment I changed it, my machine worked perfectly lol.

But doesn’t a Bernina have a tension regulator built in? I think that makes a difference.
