Thanks man, this video helped me bring a lufekin wiggler back to use… I’m going to use it alongside my standard .200” edge finder for the CNC machine

I have been a machinist for 50 years. I have seen these, never used them. I call an .200 edge finder, a wiggler. If you have a DRO, like this (I have the same B&L, I bought in 1980), I "wiggle" the far edge, zero out the digital readout and wiggle the front edge, take the reading and dividing by two. That gives you a very accurate center of the part. My father was an engineer, his two brothers were life long machinists, and their father was a tool & die maker during the depression. When my uncle retired, he gave me his tool box. There was that same wiggler pouch in it. Now I know how it works, although I would never use it. That uncle served as a machinist's mate on a submarine tender in WW2. He would have liked these machinist's tips here. Thanks.

That was helpfull,very mush so:) I just bought a mill & I have had one of these wigglers for 5+ years, never knew what it was. I bought a ton of used mill bits & things from a retired guy & used some of the lathe tools & a few mill bits on my drill, now I get to try the rest. next up is a good vice

Hi Mr Pete, greetings from England, I have just found one of these sets in a box of stuff that was given to me along with my lathe, and I wasn't quite sure how to use it, but this little tutorial has given me the answers I was looking for. Incidentally, mine has a smaller indicator shaft with a small disc on the end with a diameter of one hundred thou. Presumably to allow you to get into a hole or groove to get a position set up. Keep em coming!

when I use a Wiggler to find an edge I have the ball end clamp as lightly tightend as practical but enough to retain the wiggler in position then advance the wiggler in to the face to be refrenced slowly till the friction of the wiggler touching the face spins it off I the call that that point and adjust the DRO for the rad this diffrent to your method as you do not have to judge when it is there Paul

Nice video, the method you show to find the edge with the ball wiggler isn't quite right. When using the ball with the spindle turning (approx. 500RPM) - the table must be slowly moved into the work until the ball spins up and off the surface. Once the ball spins up and off the surface, then the edge is found and then it can be moved in 0.125" as you say.

I use a wiggler or edge finder all the time at work, even running CNC mills if the probe breaks you have to break out the old edge finder which can be pretty hard to see in an enclosed machine. These days I run a Bridgeport mill so my edge finder is in constant use.

How come when using the wiggler, when it's steady, that's the edge, but using an edge finder, you move it until it's JUST offset again, for the edge? It seems like when the edge finder is aligned, THAT should be the edge.
@900stx72 жыл бұрын
I've always used an edge finder and wiggler the same way, move into the work piece until the tool jumps, move over half the tool diameter and you're on center.

question....I'm not a machinist, but once in a while, I need to align the centerline of a drill bit in a drill press to cross scribed center point of hole I want to drill in a piece of flat steel. It seems every time I "center punch" this point, it isn't dead on. How do you do this without centerpunching first, as it is never as accurate as I want. I've searched the net to no avail to find a solution.
@mrpete2229 жыл бұрын
+Martin Walters One of my videos goes into great detail on that with several methods. I do not remember which one
@martinwalters19549 жыл бұрын
Ok, thanks. I'll look for it. Although, after viewing this video, it dawned on me why machinists use the methods shown in your video. I've never been introduced to machinist's skills and methods so I'm trying to learn some to adapt to my own needs in my general purpose shop. I just bought a dial indicator, after seeing how they are used for so many things. Thanks again
@martinwalters19549 жыл бұрын
btw, if I understand these techniques correctly, you are simply accurately finding an edge to measure to another point, no? Kind of like a tape measure, but ultimately more accurate? Thanks for any insight.

I have access to a few lathes and a mill at work. Ive been toying around with them as a hobby......now im hooked. I found and exact wiggler like the one in this video at work, except its mad by Starrett. I told my co-workers I was going to ask Mr. Pete how to use it. Sure enough he had an answer. Do you have any videos on boring and sleeving a bearing housing? Thanks always!

Depend on the jobs and tolerences you have to hold. Wiggler or edge finder are used for refferent only. Then after that you have to use precision tools to pick up and set the target (x0,y0...). Machinist job you must work and learn experiences for all your life, but you still need to go to school to learn about the basic of Technology first. It is the most important for your carrier in future.
